Best Buy Charge: Identify, Verify, and Dispute It

A Best Buy charge on your statement almost always comes from one of four things: an in-store or online purchase, an auto-renewing membership or Geek Squad protection plan, a pending authorization hold that hasn’t finalized, or, less often, an unauthorized transaction. The descriptor rarely reads as a plain “Best Buy,” which is why a legitimate charge can look unfamiliar. Work through the descriptor first, then your account, then your email. If the charge still doesn’t fit, you have clear routes to dispute it, and the rules differ depending on whether it hit a credit card or a debit card.

What the Descriptor Is Telling You

The wording on your statement encodes where and how you paid. A few common formats:

  • In-store: BEST BUY followed by a store number, such as BEST BUY #365, sometimes with a city and state. You may also see BBY*BEST BUY with a location.
  • Online: BESTBUY.COM RICHFIELD MN or BEST BUY 00001582 RICHFIELD MN. Richfield, Minnesota is Best Buy’s corporate headquarters, so even orders shipped to your home may show that city.
  • Geek Squad services: GEEKSQUAD PLAN, GEEKSQUAD RENEW, GEEKSQUADONLINE, or BESTBUY GSP MTH for monthly protection plans.
  • Memberships: BESTBUY RENEWAL, BEST BUY TOTALTECH, or BEST BUY PROTECTION.
  • Best Buy store card: if you use the store-branded card issued by Citibank, the charge may appear as CITIBANK BEST BUY or MY BEST BUY VISA rather than the retailer’s name.1Citi. My Best Buy Credit Cards
  • Refunds: BEST BUY REFUND, or BEST BUY with a store number and CR (credit).

A store number in the descriptor is a real lead. You can search that number on Best Buy’s website or call the store to confirm a purchase.

Recurring Memberships and Geek Squad Plans

The most common source of a surprise Best Buy charge is a renewal you forgot about. My Best Buy Plus is $29.99 per year. My Best Buy Total is $179.99 per year. Both paid tiers renew automatically each year unless you cancel first.2Best Buy. My Best Buy Memberships The free My Best Buy account tier does not carry a charge.3Best Buy. Geek Squad Protection is a separate product: a service contract sold at checkout that extends coverage beyond the manufacturer warranty. It can be billed as a lump sum or monthly, and Best Buy’s terms authorize the company to charge your card on file each month until you cancel.4Best Buy. Geek Squad Protection Plan Terms and Conditions The monthly amount depends on the item covered, so these charges range from a few dollars to more than $20. If you see a small recurring line labeled GEEKSQUAD PLAN or BESTBUY GSP MTH, check the Subscriptions or Protection Plans section of your Best Buy account to see which device is on the plan. The product it covers may have been replaced or discarded long ago.

Pending Holds That Look Like Duplicates

A charge marked “pending” is a temporary authorization hold, not a completed payment. When you swipe or place an online order, Best Buy asks your bank to reserve the funds. The hold usually drops off within a few business days once the final charge posts. For a short window you may see both the hold and the finalized charge on the account, which reads as double billing but is not.

One pattern in particular catches people out. You place an online order and see a pending charge. The order is delayed or backordered, and the original hold falls off entirely, freeing the funds. Days or weeks later the item ships, Best Buy captures the payment, and the charge reappears. That is the same purchase, not a new one. If a hold sits on your account for more than about five business days without converting into a final charge, ask your bank to release it.

Verify Before You Dispute

Five minutes of checking resolves most mystery charges.

Log into bestbuy.com or the Best Buy app and open Orders. Compare the amount and date on your statement to the entries there. Active memberships and protection plans show up under your subscriptions.

If you checked out as a guest, use Best Buy’s guest order lookup. You’ll need the order number, your last name, and the phone number used at checkout.5Best Buy. Online Order Lookup The order number is in the confirmation email.

Search your inbox and trash for messages from BestBuy.com. Order confirmations are itemized and timestamped, and matching the timestamp to the statement date usually closes the question.

Fake Geek Squad Renewal Emails

Before you treat any charge as real, make sure the notification is real. The FTC has warned about a widespread scam in which fraudsters send fake emails or texts claiming to be from Geek Squad and stating that hundreds of dollars have been charged for a renewal, urging you to call a number to dispute it.6Federal Trade Commission. How to Recognize a Fake Geek Squad Renewal Scam The purpose of the call is to extract payment information or remote access to your computer.

Signs it’s the scam:

  • The sender’s address is a Gmail, Yahoo, or other free email domain rather than an official Best Buy address.
  • The claimed amount is oddly specific and high, often around $349.99 or $398.99.
  • No matching charge appears on your actual bank or card statement.

Do not call the number in the message. If you think the charge might be real, log into your Best Buy account directly, or call Best Buy at 1-888-237-8289.

How to Dispute an Unrecognized Charge

If the charge is not in your account, your email, or your memory, and it is not a pending hold from a real order, you have two routes: Best Buy directly, or your card issuer.

Call Best Buy First

For accidental renewals and billing errors, Best Buy customer service at 1-888-237-8289 is usually the fastest fix and can often reverse the charge on the call. Have the order number or the last four digits of the card ready.

Credit Card: Fair Credit Billing Act

If the charge is on a credit card and Best Buy won’t resolve it, federal law is on your side. Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, you have 60 days from the date the card issuer sends the statement containing the disputed charge to submit a written billing error notice.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1666 – Correction of Billing Errors The notice needs your name and account number, identifies the charge, and explains why you believe it’s an error.

The creditor must acknowledge your notice within 30 days and resolve the dispute within two billing cycles, no more than 90 days. During the investigation you don’t have to pay the disputed amount, and the creditor cannot report you as delinquent on it or threaten your credit for that charge.8Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1026.13 – Billing Error Resolution Most issuers accept disputes online or by phone, but a written notice to the address on your statement preserves your full statutory rights.

Debit Card: Regulation E

Debit card protections work on a different clock, and speed matters more. Under Regulation E, your liability for unauthorized transactions depends on when you report them:9Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Comment for 1005.6 – Liability of Consumer for Unauthorized Transfers

  • Reported within 2 business days: liability capped at $50, or the amount of unauthorized transfers before you reported, whichever is less.
  • Reported between 2 and 60 days: liability can rise to $500.
  • Reported after 60 days from when the statement was sent: potentially unlimited liability for unauthorized transfers that occurred after the 60-day window closed.

If an unauthorized charge hits a debit card, call the bank the same day. Waiting can push your exposure from $50 to $500, and past 60 days it can leave you with no protection at all on later transfers.

Canceling a Renewal You Don’t Want

If the charge is a real membership or protection plan you no longer want, cancel through your BestBuy.com account under Subscriptions, or call 1-888-237-8289. Timing helps. My Best Buy Plus and Total renew annually, so canceling before the anniversary of your sign-up date avoids the next year’s charge. If the renewal has already posted, ask customer service about a full or prorated refund. Geek Squad monthly plans bill on a rolling basis; canceling mid-cycle stops future months but typically does not refund the current one.
