Belize income tax is charged at a flat 25% on income earned inside the country, with a personal relief of BZD $20,000 and a full exemption for anyone earning BZD $29,000 or less per year. Foreign-sourced income is not taxed. Returns are due by March 31 for the prior calendar year.
Who Belize Taxes
Belize runs a territorial system. Both residents and non-residents pay tax only on Belize-sourced income, and money you earn outside the country stays outside the Belizean tax net.1OECD. Information on Residency for Tax Purposes – Belize
You count as a tax resident if you spend more than 182 days in Belize during the tax year, or if you are domiciled there. Permanent residents and participants in the Qualified Retired Persons (QRP) program also qualify.2Belize Tourism Board. Retirement Program The main practical difference between resident and non-resident treatment is that residents can claim the personal relief allowance and other deductions; non-residents cannot.
The 25% Rate and What You Actually Pay
There is only one rate. Chargeable income is taxed at 25%, and chargeable income is what remains after you subtract your personal relief from gross earnings.3Government of Belize. Income and Business Tax Act – Chapter 55 There are no progressive brackets.
The Income and Business Tax Amendment Act of 2024 restructured the personal relief into three tiers based on annual earnings:4Belize Tax Services. Income Tax Calculator
- BZD $29,000 or less: fully exempt from income tax. Most employees in this bracket do not need to file a return.
- BZD $29,001 to $32,000: personal relief of BZD $20,000, plus a tax credit that keeps take-home pay from dropping below BZD $29,000. The credit phases out as income approaches $32,000.
- Over BZD $32,000: personal relief of BZD $20,000, and 25% on everything above that.
A quick example. On a salary of BZD $50,000, chargeable income is $30,000 after the $20,000 relief. Tax owed is $7,500, or an effective rate of 15%. The Belize dollar is pegged 2:1 to the US dollar, so BZD $50,000 is roughly USD $25,000.
Other Deductions
Two deductions reduce chargeable income before the 25% rate applies. Contributions to an approved charitable organization are deductible up to one-sixth of chargeable income. Educational expenses for a child are deductible up to BZD $400 per child.
How Different Kinds of Income Are Treated
Wages and Salaries
Employment income runs through a Pay As You Earn (PAYE) system. Your employer withholds income tax each pay period and sends it to the Belize Tax Service (BTS). After year-end, the employer issues a TD4 slip, the Statement of Emoluments Paid, showing your total earnings and tax withheld. The TD4 supports your annual return.
Rent, Royalties, and Business Receipts
Rental income, royalties, and premiums from real property in Belize are not taxed under the income tax. They fall under the business tax, which is charged on gross receipts at 3% for property income, with no deduction for maintenance, mortgage interest, or other expenses.5Belize Tax Service. Belize Business and Income Tax Guide Rental receipts under BZD $800 per month are exempt from the business tax if rent is the taxpayer’s only source of livelihood.
Self-employed people owe both the business tax on gross receipts and personal income tax at 25% on chargeable income after the personal relief. The business tax already paid is credited against the income tax bill, so in practice you pay whichever amount is higher.
Interest and Investment Income
Interest on time deposits held in Belize is taxed at a flat 5%, withheld at the source, and treated as a final tax. Lottery and similar winnings are subject to a 15% final tax.3Government of Belize. Income and Business Tax Act – Chapter 55
When payments go to non-residents, the business tax rates work as withholding taxes: 15% on dividends and interest on loans, and 25% on management fees, equipment rentals, technical services, and insurance premiums.5Belize Tax Service. Belize Business and Income Tax Guide Recipients in CARICOM member states may qualify for a reduced 15% rate on management fees and technical services.
Capital Gains
Belize does not impose a capital gains tax. Profits from selling real estate, shares, or other assets are not taxed, and this applies to residents and non-residents alike.

What Happens If You File or Pay Late
Late filers and late payers face several separate charges that stack. The penalty for failing to file a business tax return is 10% of the tax due for each month or part of a month the return is outstanding, running for up to 24 months.10Belize Tax Service Department. Unpaid tax accrues interest at 1.5% per month until cleared, and a late payment also triggers a one-time 10% penalty of the tax due.12Belize Tax Services. Payment FAQ The charges add up fast. A BZD $10,000 balance left unpaid for a full year can grow by roughly $12,000 in filing penalties, $1,800 in interest, and a $1,000 late payment penalty on top of the original tax.
Notes for US Citizens
There is no US-Belize tax treaty and no totalization agreement between the two social security systems. That has two practical effects.
US citizens and green card holders living in Belize must still report worldwide income to the IRS, even though Belize only taxes local income. The Foreign Earned Income Exclusion (up to $130,000 for 2026) and the Foreign Tax Credit can offset some double exposure, but neither is automatic.
Without a totalization agreement, you may pay into both social security systems on the same earnings, with no credit flowing between them. Employees of Belizean employers will have Belizean contributions deducted from pay, and self-employed Americans may still owe US self-employment tax on the same income.
Retirees admitted to the QRP program get a blanket Belizean exemption on income from sources outside the country, including foreign pensions, investment returns, and rental income.2Belize Tourism Board. Retirement Program QRP holders also receive duty-free importation of household goods, a vehicle, and a boat or light aircraft within the first year of the program. The IRS still treats all of that income as taxable regardless of the Belizean exemption.
