BC Uber Cash Charge: Causes, Disputes, and Auto-Refill

A “BC Uber Cash” charge on your bank or card statement is almost always a legitimate Uber transaction, not fraud. It reflects money being loaded into your Uber Cash prepaid balance, and the “BC” prefix appears to indicate the payment was routed through Uber’s Canadian operations. In most cases the culprit is the auto-refill setting inside the Uber app, and you can confirm the source in a minute or two by opening your Wallet.

What the Descriptor Actually Represents

Uber Cash is a prepaid balance stored inside the Uber app that you can spend on rides, Uber Eats orders, and other Uber services. When you add funds to that balance, the transaction on your statement often shows up with a descriptor like “BC Uber Cash” rather than a plain “Uber” label. Uber uses different descriptors for different services, so a ride might post as “Uber Trip” and a food order as “Uber Eats.”

The important thing is that this line item is a wallet top-up, not payment for a specific trip or delivery. That money sits in your Uber account until you spend it. Purchased Uber Cash funds do not expire, although promotional credits and card-linked benefits can.1Uber. What Is Uber Cash

Why the Charge Showed Up

Auto-Refill Triggered a Reload

The most common explanation for a surprise Uber Cash charge is auto-refill. When it’s on, Uber automatically reloads your balance whenever it drops below $10, using an amount you preset at $25, $50, or $100.2Uber Help. Why Do I Need to Refill My Uber Cash People often enable this when first setting up Uber Cash and forget about it. A single ride can push the balance under the threshold, and the reload posts to your card the same day.

Federal law treats these auto-refills as preauthorized electronic fund transfers, which means Uber needs your signed or electronically signed consent to pull recurring funds, and where the amount can vary, you’re entitled to reasonable advance notice of each transfer from either the company or your bank.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1693e – Preauthorized Transfers4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1005.10 – Preauthorized Transfers

Someone Bought Uber Cash Manually

Uber sells Uber Cash in set increments, sometimes with a small bonus for loading a larger amount.2Uber Help. Why Do I Need to Refill My Uber Cash If you don’t remember buying anything, consider who else uses your phone or account. Uber’s Family Profile feature lets an organizer cover other members’ rides from a shared payment method, so a spouse’s or child’s activity can generate charges you don’t recognize at a glance.5Uber. It May Be a Temporary Hold, Not a Charge

At the start of a trip, Uber can place an authorization hold on your payment method for the upfront price. That hold appears as pending and can briefly look like a duplicate charge while it overlaps with the final one. Holds drop off on their own once your bank processes the void.6Uber Help. Verify the Charge in the Uber App

Open the Uber app and go to Wallet (or Account, depending on your version). The activity feed lists every credit added and every dollar spent, with dates and amounts. Match the date and amount on your statement against the entries there. A matching reload usually solves the mystery on its own.

While you’re in Wallet, check whether auto-refill is on. If it is, you’ll see the reload amount and the linked payment method. That’s where most people find the answer.7Uber Help. Purchasing Uber Cash

If you’re the organizer of a Family Profile, check that too. The organizer gets a receipt for every ride a family member takes, and those charges go to the organizer’s default payment method. You can manage this under Settings, then Family, then Preferences.5Uber. How Uber Family Profiles Work

Disputing a Charge You Don’t Recognize

Start With Uber

If nothing in your app history matches the charge, report it to Uber. The help portal asks for the charge amount, the transaction date, the card’s first six and last four digits, the card expiration date, and a screenshot of the statement entry. Black out anything sensitive on the screenshot before uploading.8Uber Help. My Account Has an Unrecognized Charge Uber will email you to verify your identity before routing you to a support agent. Save any ticket or confirmation number.

Then Your Bank or Card Issuer

If Uber can’t resolve it, or you suspect actual fraud, federal protections kick in. Which one applies depends on the card type.

For credit cards, the Fair Credit Billing Act gives you 60 days from the date the card issuer sends the statement containing the error to file a written dispute. The creditor must acknowledge the notice within 30 days and resolve it within two billing cycles.9Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1026.13 – Billing Error Resolution

For debit cards and bank accounts, the Electronic Fund Transfer Act gives you the same 60-day window from the date the bank sends the statement reflecting the error. The bank must investigate and report back within 10 business days, or 20 for new accounts, though it can take up to 45 days when it provisionally credits your account.10Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1005.11 – Procedures for Resolving Errors Don’t wait. Missing the 60-day window can limit what your bank has to do.

If You’ve Never Used Uber at All

A “BC Uber Cash” charge on the card of someone with no Uber account is a stronger fraud signal. Someone may have used your card number to set up an account or load Uber Cash on an existing one. Skip the app in that case and go directly to your bank or card issuer. Request a chargeback and ask for a replacement card with a new number. You can still report the charge to Uber through the unrecognized charge form without an account, using the card details and a screenshot.11Uber Help. My Account Has an Unrecognised Charge

Turn Off Auto-Refill So It Doesn’t Happen Again

The single most effective prevention step is disabling auto-refill. In the Uber app, open Wallet, find the auto-refill setting, and switch it off. After that, Uber won’t pull funds from your card unless you manually authorize a purchase, and the change takes effect immediately.7Uber Help. Purchasing Uber Cash

If you organize a Family Profile, take a minute to review who’s on it and remove anyone who no longer needs access. Also check any linked subscription like Uber One, which renews on a recurring basis and can deposit reward credits into your Uber Cash balance. Each of these is a possible source of a charge you might not immediately tie back to Uber when you’re scanning a statement.
