Bank Relationship Pricing: Tiers, Thresholds, and Trade-Offs

Bank relationship pricing is a tiered discount program that rewards you for keeping a larger combined balance — deposits plus investments, sometimes plus loans — at a single institution. Hit a threshold and the bank waives monthly fees, boosts your savings rate, discounts loan rates, and multiplies credit card rewards. The catch is almost never printed on the brochure: qualifying usually means parking cash in low-yield accounts that pay a fraction of what you’d earn elsewhere, so the program is only a good deal if the perks you actually use are worth more than the interest you walk away from.

How Banks Calculate Your Combined Balance

Banks add up what you hold with them across linked accounts and use the total to place you in a tier. The typical formula sweeps in checking, savings, certificates of deposit, money market accounts, brokerage holdings, and retirement accounts held through the bank’s investment affiliate. Credit products like mortgages, home equity lines, and personal loans sometimes count too, usually by outstanding balance rather than credit limit.

Two calculation methods dominate. Some banks use a combined daily balance, meaning the sum of all linked balances on a given day. Others use a combined average monthly balance, which averages daily ending balances across all accounts over a statement cycle. Citi, for instance, calculates a “Combined Average Monthly Balance” across linked deposit, retirement, and investment accounts to assign relationship tiers.1Citibank. Business accounts are a common blind spot. If you run a small business, those balances usually don’t count toward your personal tier. Citi explicitly excludes non-consumer accounts from its tier math, and its mortgage relationship pricing excludes business and commercial balances as well.1Citibank. Tier Thresholds at Major Banks

Programs organize into named tiers with escalating balance requirements and escalating benefits. Names differ, structure doesn’t. A few reference points:

  • Bank of America Preferred Rewards: Gold begins at $20,000, Platinum at $50,000, and Platinum Honors at $100,000 in combined three-month average daily balances across deposit and Merrill investment accounts.3Bank of America. Bank of America Preferred Rewards – Banking Rewards Program
  • Citi: the entry-level relationship tier starts at $30,000, Citigold requires $200,000 to qualify, and $180,000 to keep.1Citibank. Compare Bank Accounts
  • Chase Private Client: $150,000 or more in combined average beginning-day balances across linked personal deposits and qualifying investments.4Chase. Chase Private Client Checking

Placement is automatic. Once your average balance clears the threshold for the required period, the system assigns the tier at the close of the statement cycle. You don’t apply. The same mechanism works in reverse when balances drop.

What You Get at Each Tier

The most immediate benefit is the disappearance of fees you’d otherwise pay every month. Checking maintenance fees around $14 a month vanish at most relationship tiers, and higher tiers usually waive fees across every linked deposit account rather than just the primary checking. Chase Private Client, for example, waives monthly service fees on all linked deposit accounts.4Chase. Chase Private Client Checking

Wire fees go next. Domestic outgoing wires at major banks typically run $25 to $30, and international wires often exceed $50. Citigold charges nothing on incoming wires and select outgoing transfers.5Citigold. Citigold Banking Benefits Chase Private Client cuts wire fees in both directions.4Chase. Out-of-network ATM costs average around $4.86 once you combine the machine owner’s surcharge with your own bank’s foreign ATM fee. Citigold reimburses non-Citi ATM fees globally with no cap.5Citigold. Citigold Banking Benefits Bank of America’s Platinum Honors tier offers unlimited non-network ATM use at no fee.3Bank of America. On the lending side, Bank of America’s auto loan discount scales with tier: 0.25% off at Gold, 0.35% at Platinum, and 0.50% at Platinum Honors.3Bank of America. Bank of America Preferred Rewards – Banking Rewards Program Chase mortgage relationship pricing ranges from 0.125% to 0.25% based on existing balances, with additional discounts for new deposits that can push the total to as much as 1%.6Chase. Relationship Pricing – Mortgage On a $400,000 mortgage, even a quarter-point cut is roughly $1,000 a year in interest.

Credit card earning gets amplified too. Bank of America gives Gold members a 25% bonus on base card rewards, Platinum 50%, and Platinum Honors 75%. A 1.5% base card earns an effective 2.625% at Platinum Honors. Investment-side perks are more modest; Bank of America discounts annual program fees on Merrill Guided Investing starting at 0.05% off for Gold.3Bank of America. What You Give Up

To qualify for premium tiers you have to hold substantial cash at institutions that pay near-zero interest on standard deposit accounts. As of early 2026, Chase and Bank of America pay about 0.01% APY on basic savings while high-yield online savings accounts offer 4% or more. On $100,000 in savings, that gap costs roughly $4,000 a year in forgone interest. The relationship rate boost premium tiers advertise rarely closes that gap.

So the honest question is whether waived fees, loan discounts, card bonuses, and other perks exceed that opportunity cost. For someone who rarely wires money, doesn’t carry a mortgage with the bank, and uses few of the premium services, the math often fails. You pay thousands in lost yield for benefits worth hundreds.

The calculus flips for people who use the full suite. A mortgage with a 0.25% relationship discount, a credit card running a 75% rewards bonus, frequent international wires, and real use of a dedicated banker can clear the hurdle. Run the numbers rather than trusting the “preferred” label. A common compromise: keep just enough at the relationship bank to hit the threshold and move excess cash to a higher-yielding account elsewhere.

Keeping Your Tier and What Happens If You Slip

Banks review balances automatically, typically at the close of each statement cycle. A dip below the minimum doesn’t always trigger an immediate downgrade. Citi allows three consecutive months below the required range before re-tiering, and notifies you of any change on your statement.5Citigold. Citigold Banking Benefits Some banks build a cushion into the structure itself: Citigold takes $200,000 to enter but only $180,000 to keep.1Citibank. Compare Bank Accounts

When a downgrade does land, the pricing shifts right away. Rate boosts stop, monthly maintenance fees come back, and waivers on wires and ATM reimbursements end. Market volatility creates a quiet risk here. If a large share of your qualifying balance is in a brokerage account, a downturn can drop you below the threshold even though you never withdrew a dollar. Some customers only notice the slip when a monthly fee they hadn’t seen in years reappears on a statement.

Regulation DD provides a floor of protection. Your bank must give at least 30 calendar days’ advance notice before changing account terms in a way that reduces your annual percentage yield or otherwise adversely affects you.7eCFR. 12 CFR 1030.5 – Subsequent Disclosures That covers rate cuts and fee increases triggered by a tier change, so the bank can’t silently slash your savings rate overnight.

Deposit Insurance When You Consolidate

Pulling your financial life under one roof raises a protection question most relationship pitches skip. FDIC deposit insurance covers $250,000 per depositor, per bank, for each ownership category.8FDIC. Understanding Deposit Insurance All your single-ownership checking, savings, money market, and CD balances at the same bank are combined under that single $250,000 cap, not insured per account.

Different ownership categories unlock separate coverage. Joint accounts, revocable trust accounts, and certain retirement accounts like IRAs each qualify for their own $250,000 at the same bank.9FDIC. General Principles of Insurance Coverage A couple with individual accounts, a joint account, and IRAs can insure well over $1 million at one bank, but only through deliberate structuring. Opening several solo savings accounts in your own name gets you no extra protection.

Investment balances through the bank’s brokerage affiliate sit under a different regime entirely. SIPC covers up to $500,000 per customer, including a $250,000 cash sublimit, if the brokerage fails. It does not cover market losses, bad advice, or declines in security values — only missing assets when a brokerage is liquidated.10SIPC. What SIPC Protects If investments make up most of what qualifies you for your tier, the backstop under those dollars is not the same backstop that covers your deposits.

What the Bank Must Disclose Before You Enroll

The Truth in Savings Act requires banks to give you specific disclosures before you open an account or accept a service. These include the annual percentage yield, the interest rate, every fee that may be imposed, minimum balance requirements and how balances are calculated, and the interest computation method.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 12 USC Ch 44 – Truth in Savings For tiered accounts — which is exactly what relationship pricing creates — the bank must disclose each rate and the balance range to which it applies.11eCFR. 12 CFR 1030.4 – Account Disclosures

In practice you should receive a document spelling out every tier’s threshold, the exact interest rates at each level, every fee that applies and every fee that’s waived, and the formula the bank uses to calculate your qualifying balance. If an institution is vague about how it weights investment versus deposit balances, or hedges on which accounts count toward the total, ask for the written disclosure. The law entitles you to it before the account opens, not after.11eCFR. 12 CFR 1030.4 – Account Disclosures Read the actual disclosure, not the brochure.
