To apply for a Bangladesh National Identity Card, fill out the application form on the Election Commission’s NID portal at services.nidw.gov.bd, print the completed form, and take it to your local Upazila or Thana Election Office for biometric enrollment. Staff there collect your fingerprints, iris scans, photograph, and signature, then issue a registration slip you keep until your Smart NID is ready. Citizens living overseas follow the same online step but complete biometrics at a Bangladeshi embassy or consulate.
Who Can Register
Any Bangladeshi citizen aged 16 or older can now register. This is a recent change. From 2008 until early 2026, only citizens 18 and above were eligible; the Election Commission extended eligibility to 16- and 17-year-olds under Article 5 of the National Identity Registration (Amendment) Act, 2010, and directed field offices to begin processing those applications in February 2026.
Beyond age, you must be a Bangladeshi citizen and a resident of an electoral area. These qualifications sit in Article 122 of the Constitution and the Electoral Rolls Act of 2009.1Bangladesh Election Commission. Enroll and Obtaining NID
Documents You Need Before You Start
Gather these before opening the application. Submissions with missing paperwork get rejected, and the local office may still ask for more depending on your situation.
- A 17-digit Bangladeshi Birth Registration Certificate, with both a photocopy and an online-verified copy.
- Proof of your parents’ identity: their NID, birth certificate, passport, death certificate (if deceased), or nationality certificate. If you are married, your spouse’s NID and marriage certificate may also be requested.
- Academic certificates. The SSC or equivalent is commonly requested for name and date-of-birth verification. If you have not reached that level, a JSC or PSC certificate may substitute.
- Address proof: a utility bill (electricity, gas, or water), holding tax receipt, or rental agreement for your current address.
Depending on your circumstances, the Upazila Election Office may ask for additional items such as a driving license or Tax Identification Number.2Bangladesh High Commission, London. Information and Guidelines for National Identity (NID) Card Application
Filling Out the Online Application
Registration starts at the Election Commission’s NID portal, services.nidw.gov.bd. You fill out the application form, which requires a working Bangladeshi mobile number for identity verification. Once submitted, print the completed form. You will need the physical copy when you go in for biometrics.
The Biometric Enrollment Visit
The next step is in person at your local Upazila or Thana Election Office. Staff collect fingerprints from all ten fingers, iris scans from both eyes, a high-resolution photograph, and your signature.3Embassy of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Washington, DC. NID Service Details This visit is mandatory. No one can provide biometrics on your behalf.
If you are disabled, elderly, or homebound and cannot easily travel to the registration center, the Election Commission makes special arrangements for enrollment.1Bangladesh Election Commission. Enroll and Obtaining NID
After enrollment, the officer issues a registration slip. Keep it. It serves as temporary proof of your application and is what you use to collect your Smart NID card once verification is complete. Processing times vary because each Upazila Election Office runs authenticity checks on the information you submitted, and backlogs differ by region.
What You Receive
The Smart NID is a machine-readable card with an embedded microchip storing 32 categories of personal information, including your fingerprints and iris scans. The card carries 25 security features designed to prevent forgery, a significant upgrade from the older laminated NID. Your name, photograph, date of birth, NID number, and other identifying details are printed on the face; the chip holds the full dataset for authorized readers.
Once issued, the card is used for banking, mobile SIM purchases, land transactions, passport applications, and voter eligibility.
Applying From Abroad
Bangladeshi citizens living overseas who have never held an NID and never previously applied in Bangladesh can register through their nearest embassy or consulate general. You still submit the online application through the same NID portal, then book an appointment for biometric enrollment at the diplomatic mission.
Document requirements differ slightly. You need a valid or expired Bangladeshi passport (MRP or e-passport) as proof of citizenship. If you have no passport, you can submit a declaration form attesting to your Bangladeshi citizenship, signed by three Bangladeshi NID holders living in the same country. Citizens from Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Rangamati, Khagrachari, and Bandarban districts must also complete a Special Information Form.3Embassy of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Washington, DC. After biometric enrollment, the embassy forwards your data to the NID Wing of the Election Commission in Bangladesh, where the same verification runs. The embassy or consulate delivers your Smart NID card once it arrives from Dhaka. Processing tends to run longer than domestic applications because the data moves between multiple offices.
Checking Status and Using a Digital NID
You can check your Smart NID card’s production and delivery status through the Election Commission’s website at services.nidw.gov.bd/nid-pub/card-status.4Bangladesh Election Commission. Bangladesh Election Commission – NID Wing
While you wait for the physical card, the NID Wallet mobile app lets you carry a digital version of your NID on your phone. The app uses facial recognition to verify your identity when you first claim your account. You scan your face to prove you are the person linked to that NID number.5Google Play. Penalties for False Information
The law treats false submissions seriously. Intentionally providing incorrect or misleading details during NID registration, or concealing relevant information, carries a penalty of up to one year of imprisonment, a fine of up to 20,000 Taka, or both. Forging an NID card or knowingly carrying a forged one is punished more severely: up to seven years of imprisonment and a fine of up to 100,000 Taka. The Election Commission has flagged thousands of NID records containing false data, and enforcement has been a growing priority.
