BAH Reserve Component/Transit: Eligibility, 2026 Rates, and Claims

BAH Reserve Component/Transit, usually written BAH-RC/T, is a flat-rate housing allowance paid to Reserve and National Guard members on active-duty orders of 30 days or fewer, and to active-duty members traveling between permanent duty stations. It doesn’t vary by zip code the way regular BAH does. For 2026, monthly rates run from $811.50 for a junior enlisted member without dependents up to $3,035.10 for a general or flag officer with dependents. Because short orders don’t justify the paperwork of calculating local housing costs, the military pays a single national rate instead.1Military Compensation and Financial Readiness. Types of BAH

Who Qualifies

Eligibility depends on your orders, not on where you live or what you pay in rent. Two groups draw this allowance.

The first is Guard and Reserve members called to active duty for 30 days or fewer. That 30-day line is the dividing point. On day 31 of continuous active duty, you shift to the locality-based BAH tied to your duty station’s zip code. Two-week annual training, weekend drill activations that convert to short orders, and most operational support missions under a month all fall under RC/T.1Military Compensation and Financial Readiness. Types of BAH The statute directing the Secretary of Defense to set a specific rate for reservists on orders of 30 days or fewer sits at 37 USC 403.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 37 USC 403 – Basic Allowance for Housing

The second group is active-duty members between permanent duty stations who temporarily lack a locality rate. That gap shows up during travel from an overseas assignment to a stateside post, or while en route from a professional military education school. BAH-RC/T fills the gap until you check in at the new command.3United States Marine Corps. MARADMIN 238/06 – Basic Allowance for Housing BAH and Overseas Housing Allowance OHA Policy Changes

2026 Payment Rates

Two things drive the amount: your pay grade and whether you have dependents. A member with dependents always receives more than a member of the same grade without. Because the rate is a national average, an E-5 training in San Diego draws the same allowance as an E-5 training at Fort Leonard Wood.1Military Compensation and Financial Readiness. Types of BAH

Selected 2026 monthly rates:

  • E-1 through E-2: $811.50 without dependents / $1,080.60 with dependents
  • E-5: $1,052.70 without dependents / $1,403.70 with dependents
  • E-7: $1,265.70 without dependents / $1,687.20 with dependents
  • E-9: $1,494.90 without dependents / $1,971.60 with dependents
  • W-2: $1,359.00 without dependents / $1,730.70 with dependents
  • O-3: $1,618.20 without dependents / $1,920.30 with dependents
  • O-5: $2,178.00 without dependents / $2,633.40 with dependents
  • O-7 and above: $2,466.30 without dependents / $3,035.10 with dependents

Warrant officer rates sit between the enlisted and commissioned ranges. The Department of Defense updates all of these figures annually, typically effective January 1.

Most short activations don’t cover a full month, and BAH-RC/T is prorated daily. The military divides the monthly figure by 30 and pays for each qualifying day. A 14-day annual training for an E-5 with dependents comes out to roughly $655 rather than the full monthly $1,403.70.

One tax point worth knowing: BAH-RC/T is not subject to federal income tax. The IRS treats all basic allowance for housing payments as qualified military benefits, excluded from gross income by federal law.4Internal Revenue Service. Treasury, IRS – Supplemental Basic Allowance for Housing Payments to Members of the Military Are Not Taxable It won’t appear on your W-2 or raise your adjusted gross income. Most states follow the federal treatment, though state rules vary.

When Short Orders Get Extended Past 30 Days

This is where a lot of Guard and Reserve pay problems start. If your original orders run 30 days or fewer but later get extended so that your total active-duty period exceeds 30 days, your housing entitlement changes. On the effective date of the extension, BAH-RC/T stops and locality-based BAH begins.5Office of the Under Secretary of Defense (Comptroller). Department of Defense Financial Management Regulation Volume 7A, Chapter 26

The switch is triggered by an order modification, an assignment extension, or additional consecutive orders that create a new active-duty period of 31 days or more. The word “consecutive” matters. If there’s a break in service between two sets of short orders, the days don’t add together. Two separate 20-day activations with a gap each pay BAH-RC/T on their own and don’t push you into the locality rate.5Office of the Under Secretary of Defense (Comptroller). Department of Defense Financial Management Regulation Volume 7A, Chapter 26

Depending on the duty station, the locality rate could be higher or lower than BAH-RC/T. A high-cost city works in your favor; a rural post can mean a pay cut. Either way, finance needs the amended orders to process the change, so grab a copy of any extension paperwork the moment it’s issued.

Government Quarters

If the military assigns you adequate government housing during the activation, you generally lose your BAH-RC/T entitlement.6Defense Travel Management Office. Basic Allowance for Housing That covers barracks, base housing, and any quarters the government designates as appropriate for your grade. An open-bay bunk during two-week annual training counts as provided quarters, so don’t plan on drawing BAH-RC/T on top of it.

Members with dependents who get assigned single-type quarters sometimes still receive a partial allowance because those quarters can’t house a family. Whether that comes out as BAH-RC/T, BAH-Differential, or nothing at all depends on the specifics, and your unit’s admin office is the place to sort it out before the activation starts, not after.

Documents You Need to Get Paid

Correct payment depends on having the right paperwork lined up. Three items do the work:

  • Active-duty orders showing start date, end date, and type of duty. These dates control both eligibility and the number of days paid.
  • Dependency documentation if you’re claiming the with-dependents rate. Marriage certificates and children’s birth certificates are the standard proof. If they’re already in your service record, you probably won’t need to resubmit.
  • DD Form 1351-2, the travel voucher used to claim BAH-RC/T. It captures your itinerary, duty dates, and entitlement information.7Executive Services Directorate. DD Form 1351-2 – Travel Voucher or Subvoucher

When you fill out the 1351-2, copy the inclusive dates from your orders exactly into the itinerary section. Mismatched dates are one of the most common reasons a claim gets kicked back. Your unit admin clerk can walk you through it, and DFAS publishes step-by-step guidance for TDY vouchers.8Defense Finance and Accounting Service. Completing TDY Travel Voucher

Submitting the Claim

You submit through your local Finance Office or electronically. DFAS offers SmartVoucher, which walks you through the entries and generates the completed DD Form 1351-2. Access is through myPay credentials or a CAC.9Defense Finance and Accounting Service. SmartVoucher

A military pay technician reviews the submission. Once approved, DFAS releases payment by Electronic Funds Transfer to the bank account on your record. Funds should hit within three to five business days after the voucher is released. You’ll get an email notification at the address in box 6E of the 1351-2, and you can check status through DFAS Travel Voucher Direct after about 48 hours.10Defense Finance and Accounting Service. If a claim comes back rejected or with corrections requested, resubmit fast. Housing allowance claims that sit unresolved past the end of the orders get significantly harder to process, and chasing down approving officials months later is the kind of problem that grows the longer you leave it alone.
