An AUTOBKS charge on your bank statement comes from Autobooks, a payment and accounting service that community banks and credit unions embed inside their own online banking portals. The charge is almost always one of three things: a $9.99 monthly subscription fee, a percentage-based processing fee on a payment you sent or received, or a payment you made to a small business that uses Autobooks to invoice its customers. The label looks unfamiliar because the software runs inside your bank’s platform rather than as a standalone service, so transactions carry the Autobooks name instead of the bank’s.1Autobooks. Understanding Autobooks Transactions Within My Bank Account
Which of the Three Charges Is Yours
A $9.99 Monthly Subscription
Autobooks has a basic payment tier and an upgraded version that adds bookkeeping and reporting. The upgrade costs $9.99 per month after a free trial, usually 30 days, though some banks run a 60-day trial.2Autobooks. Autobooks Fees If you activated the accounting features through your bank’s online portal and let the trial lapse, the monthly fee started billing automatically. This is the most common surprise charge.
A Processing Fee on a Payment You Received
Every payment that runs through Autobooks has a processing fee skimmed before the funds hit your account. The rates are percentage-only, with no fixed per-transaction add-on:2Autobooks. Autobooks Fees
- Online invoice (card-not-present): 3.49%
- ACH or electronic check: 1%
- Tap to Pay on iPhone: 2.75%
If you run a small business and received a customer payment shortly before the fee posted, this is almost certainly what you’re seeing.
A Payment You Made to a Business
You don’t need to use Autobooks to see its name on your statement. If you paid an invoice to a contractor, freelancer, or small business that processes payments through the platform, the outgoing transaction can carry the AUTOBKS label. Check recent email for an invoice or receipt from a vendor and the amounts should line up.
How to Cancel So It Stops Billing
If you subscribed through your bank’s app marketplace or online store, you have to unsubscribe through that same marketplace. Canceling directly with Autobooks won’t stop the charges when the bank’s system is what initiates them.3Autobooks. Changing My Autobooks Plan Look for a subscriptions, apps, or marketplace area inside your online banking.
To close the Autobooks account itself, submit a ticket at help.autobooks.co/contact-autobooks-support or call (866) 617-3122.4Autobooks. Welcome to Autobooks Export any invoices, payment records, or reports first. Once the account closes, that data is gone.3Autobooks. Changing My Autobooks Plan
Canceling only stops future charges. If an existing charge is wrong or unauthorized, you still need to dispute it separately.
How to Dispute an Unauthorized Charge
If the account where you see the charge is a personal checking or savings account, federal law gives you real leverage. The Electronic Fund Transfer Act and Regulation E apply to accounts established for personal, family, or household purposes.5Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1005.2 Definitions If it’s a business account, the next section applies instead.
Report Within 60 Days
You have 60 days from the date your bank sends the statement showing the charge to notify the bank of the error. The statute is explicit: miss that window, and your liability for further unauthorized transfers after the 60 days is unlimited.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1693f – Error Resolution Report anything unfamiliar as soon as you spot it.
Liability Tiers for Lost or Stolen Credentials
If the charge involves a lost or stolen card or stolen online banking credentials, how fast you report sets your maximum loss:7Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Comment for 1005.6 Liability of Consumer for Unauthorized Transfers
- Within 2 business days of learning about it: capped at $50 (or the amount taken before you notified the bank, whichever is less).
- After 2 business days but within 60 days of the statement: up to $500.
- After 60 days: unlimited for anything that happens past day 60.
What the Bank Must Do
Once you give notice, the bank has 10 business days to investigate and tell you the result. It can extend to 45 days, but only if it provisionally credits your account during those first 10 business days and lets you use the money while it keeps looking.8Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1005.11 Procedures for Resolving Errors
If the Charge Is on a Business Account
This matters because Autobooks is built for small business banking, so the account carrying the charge is often a commercial one. Regulation E’s protections don’t reach business accounts.5Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1005.2 Definitions Instead, UCC Article 4A and your bank’s account agreement govern. If the bank used a “commercially reasonable security procedure” and followed it in good faith, it can shift liability for an unauthorized transfer to you even when the transfer turns out to be fraudulent.
The reporting window is also much shorter. Under NACHA rules for commercial ACH debits, your bank generally has to return an unauthorized entry by midnight of the next business day after posting, and many banks set earlier internal cutoffs. Miss that window and the debit becomes yours. For a business account, monitor transactions daily rather than waiting for the monthly statement.
Filing the Dispute
Before contacting the bank, pull the transaction date, the exact dollar amount, and any reference or transaction ID shown next to the AUTOBKS entry in your online history. Having those three details ready keeps the investigation moving.
Most banks accept disputes through an online form inside secure messaging or the customer service tab. Enter the account number, the date, the AUTOBKS description, and a short explanation of why you believe it’s wrong or unauthorized. If you have to call instead, ask the representative to document the dispute in writing on the call so the clock starts the same day.
One last thing worth keeping straight: a dispute reverses one transaction. If the charge is a legitimate Autobooks subscription or processing fee you simply want to stop, you still need to cancel the service through your bank’s marketplace, or new charges will keep posting.
