Australian Retirement Trust Withdrawal Form: Steps, ID, and Tax

To withdraw your super from Australian Retirement Trust, you complete the Retirement and Unrestricted Super Claim Form, available through Member Online or as a downloadable PDF. The Australian Retirement Trust withdrawal form handles both full and partial lump sum payments. Before the fund releases money, you need to have met a legal condition of release, verified your identity, and supplied your bank details and Tax File Number.1Australian Retirement Trust. Check You Can Actually Withdraw

Super is locked until you satisfy a condition of release under the Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Regulations 1994. The most common route is reaching your preservation age and permanently retiring. Preservation age depends on your date of birth:2Australian Taxation Office. Conditions of Release

  • Born before 1 July 1960: 55
  • 1 July 1960 to 30 June 1961: 56
  • 1 July 1961 to 30 June 1962: 57
  • 1 July 1962 to 30 June 1963: 58
  • 1 July 1963 to 30 June 1964: 59
  • Born after 30 June 1964: 60

Permanently retired means you have left a job and do not intend to work for pay for 10 or more hours a week again. Once you turn 65, the condition is automatic whether you are still working or not. Permanent incapacity is a separate pathway and requires medical evidence, typically certification from at least two registered medical practitioners.3Australian Taxation Office. When You Can Access Your Super Early

If you have not met a condition of release, this is not the right form. Severe financial hardship, compassionate grounds, and the First Home Super Saver scheme each have their own process, covered briefly at the end.

Decide What You Want Paid

The Retirement and Unrestricted Super Claim Form pays a lump sum. You can tick “full balance,” which closes your account, or specify a dollar amount for a partial withdrawal, which leaves the rest invested and keeps the account open for future draws.1Australian Retirement Trust. If you want regular payments instead, that’s a different application. Australian Retirement Trust offers a standard Retirement Income account, a Transition to Retirement account for people still working, and a Lifetime Pension. Existing members apply for the income accounts through Member Online; the Lifetime Pension uses the application form in the back of its Product Disclosure Statement.4Australian Retirement Trust. What to Have Ready Before You Start

Whether you go online or on paper, pull these together first:

  • Your ART member number, which appears on your statement and in Member Online.
  • Your Tax File Number. If ART does not have your TFN on file, tax on the taxable portion of your payout can be withheld at the top marginal rate, up to 47% including the Medicare levy. Add your TFN through Member Online before you submit the withdrawal to avoid this.5Australian Retirement Trust. Tax on Superannuation
  • BSB and account number for an Australian bank account in your name. Check every digit. Recovering money sent to the wrong account is slow and not guaranteed.
  • The amount you want paid, or confirmation that you want the full balance.

If you fill in a paper form, write in clear block letters. Illegible entries and small errors are a common reason ART sends forms back for correction, which adds days.

Complete and Submit the Form

The fastest route is Member Online at australianretirementtrust.com.au. Sign in, go to “Your account,” and select “Access your super.” The portal pre-fills your personal details and steps you through the questions. For a paper claim, download the Retirement and Unrestricted Super Claim Form from the forms page, print it, and complete it by hand.1Australian Retirement Trust. Superannuation Forms and Documents

You have two ways to lodge it:

  • Online: upload the completed form and any supporting documents through Member Online. Scanned or photographed documents in common file formats are accepted.
  • By mail: send the original signed form and certified copies of your ID to GPO Box 2924, Brisbane QLD 4001.6Australian Retirement Trust. Our USI and ABN Numbers

For questions before you submit, ART’s phone line is 13 11 84, 8 am to 7:30 pm AEST Monday to Friday. Live chat runs during the same hours.7Australian Retirement Trust. Contact Us

Identity Verification and Certified Copies

Under the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006, ART must verify your identity before releasing funds.8AUSTRAC. AML/CTF Act If you apply through Member Online and your identity has already been verified electronically, you may not need to send anything extra. For paper applications, or where electronic verification fails, you need certified copies of an Australian ID document such as a driver’s licence or passport.

Certification means an authorised person, such as a Justice of the Peace, solicitor, or pharmacist, views the original alongside the copy and then stamps and signs the copy to confirm it is a true likeness. JPs at local courthouses and some post offices usually do this at no charge. Poorly certified documents are one of the most frequent reasons applications bounce back.

If your claim is based on permanent incapacity or terminal illness, send medical reports from registered medical practitioners that state your diagnosis, its expected permanence, and its effect on your ability to work. Getting these in order before you lodge the form prevents weeks of back-and-forth.

How Long It Takes and How You Get Paid

Straightforward lump sum withdrawals submitted online with verified identity are generally processed within a few business days. Claims involving medical evidence, foreign identification, large balances, or paper forms requiring manual data entry take longer. ART notes that hardship claims take approximately one to three weeks and may extend further during busy periods.9Australian Retirement Trust. Financial Hardship – Withdraw Super

Once approved, ART pays the funds electronically to the bank account on the form and sends a confirmation by email or letter. The gap between your account balance and the deposit is normally tax withheld or applicable fees. At tax time, ART issues a payment summary showing the tax-free and taxable components of the withdrawal.

Tax Taken Out of Your Payout

What you actually receive depends on your age and the components in your account. For members withdrawing a lump sum from a taxed fund, the taxable (taxed element) component is treated like this:10Australian Taxation Office. Payments From Super

  • Age 60 or older: tax-free.
  • Preservation age to 59: tax-free up to the low rate cap of $260,000 (lifetime limit for 2025–26). Amounts above the cap are taxed at 15% plus the Medicare levy.
  • Under preservation age: the entire taxable component is taxed at 20% plus the Medicare levy.

The tax-free component, generally built from non-concessional (after-tax) contributions, is paid tax-free at any age. Untaxed funds, which are mostly older public-sector schemes, use higher rates: 15% within the low rate cap, 30% above it up to the untaxed plan cap, and 45% above that.10Australian Taxation Office. If You’re Not Retiring: Early Access and First Home

Three situations use different applications, not this form.

Severe financial hardship. You need to have been receiving a Commonwealth income support payment, such as JobSeeker or a pension, for a continuous period, and you must show you cannot meet reasonable and immediate living expenses. ART, not the government, decides eligibility.11Services Australia. Early Release of Superannuation The minimum hardship withdrawal is $1,000 and the maximum is $10,000 per application. If your balance is below $1,000, you can withdraw whatever remains after tax.3Australian Taxation Office. When You Can Access Your Super Early Use ART’s Severe Financial Hardship form.1Australian Retirement Trust. Superannuation Forms and Documents

Compassionate grounds. These claims go through the ATO rather than straight to ART. Qualifying expenses include medical treatment or transport not covered by Medicare or private health insurance, disability modifications to your home or vehicle, mortgage arrears to prevent loss of your home, palliative care, and funeral or burial expenses for a dependant.12Australian Retirement Trust. Compassionate Release of Super You need unpaid bills, invoices, or quotes, not expenses already paid by loan or credit card. If the ATO approves the release, ART then acts on that determination.

First Home Super Saver scheme. If you are saving for a first home, you can withdraw voluntary contributions through the ATO, up to $15,000 per financial year and $50,000 total plus associated earnings.13First Home Buyers. First Home Super Saver Scheme You request a determination and then a release from the ATO, which instructs ART to pay.
