ATM deposit limits are rarely set as a flat dollar figure. Most banks cap deposits mechanically: the machine will only accept so many bills or checks per transaction, and that physical ceiling is what determines the most you can put in at once. On top of that, separate rules govern when the money becomes spendable and when a deposit gets reported to the federal government. Knowing all three layers keeps you from getting caught out at the machine.
How Much Cash You Can Deposit
Many ATMs have no dollar cap at all. The constraint is the bill-acceptance slot, which typically takes 30 to 50 bills per insertion depending on the hardware.1Chase. Can You Deposit Cash at an ATM If a machine accepts 40 bills, the per-transaction maximum ranges from $40 in ones to $4,000 in hundreds. Same slot, very different ceiling.
Because the limit is mechanical, you can usually run several back-to-back deposits at the same machine to move a larger amount. Some banks layer a daily aggregate cap on top of this, and that figure varies by institution and account type. If you have a substantial amount of cash and no answer from your bank’s website, a teller visit is faster than guessing.
One restriction catches people out: most banks only accept cash deposits at their own ATMs. At an out-of-network machine, the deposit option typically doesn’t appear on screen at all.
How Many Checks You Can Deposit
Check deposits work differently from cash because every check carries bounce risk. Banks limit both the number of checks per transaction and sometimes the daily dollar total. A typical ATM accepts between 10 and 30 checks per session, though models and bank policies vary.
Modern machines scan each check’s routing number, account number, and amount directly. Older envelope-deposit ATMs still exist in a few places and require manual processing by bank staff, which delays when the funds post. If that’s your only option, mobile deposit or a branch teller will usually get you credited faster.
Mobile check deposit caps often run in the same range as ATM check deposit limits for the same account. When a check exceeds your mobile cap, the ATM or a branch is the usual fallback.2U.S. Bank. What if My Check Amount Is Higher Than My Mobile Deposit Limit Newer accounts and lower balances tend to get the tightest caps on both channels.
Cut-Off Times for Same-Day Credit
An ATM runs 24 hours, but your deposit doesn’t necessarily count as same-day. Banks post a daily cut-off, and anything after that hour rolls into the next business day. Federal rules require ATM cut-off times to be no earlier than noon.3eCFR. Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC) Many banks set theirs later, often between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. local time, with the exact hour varying by institution and location.
Deposits made on weekends or federal holidays are treated as if they were made on the next business day. The receipt usually shows which day the deposit was credited to.
When the Money Becomes Available
Depositing money and being able to spend it are two separate things. Federal rules under Regulation CC set the maximum hold periods, and ATM deposits sometimes carry longer holds than deposits made at a teller window.
Cash
Cash deposited at your own bank’s ATM must be available no later than the second business day after the deposit.3eCFR. Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC) That’s one day slower than cash handed to a teller, which gets next-business-day availability.
Cash deposited at a nonproprietary ATM, meaning one not owned by your bank, can be held until the fifth business day under federal rules.4eCFR. 12 CFR 229.12 – Availability Schedule Most banks sidestep this by blocking deposits at outside ATMs altogether.
Checks
Checks deposited at your bank’s own ATM generally follow the same schedule as checks deposited at a branch. The first portion is typically available the next business day, with the rest released over the following days.
Several circumstances let the bank hold funds longer. Deposits totaling more than $6,725 on a single banking day trigger the large-deposit exception, and the bank can hold the amount above that threshold for additional business days.3eCFR. Availability of Funds and Collection of Checks (Regulation CC) Extended holds also apply if you have a history of overdrafts, if a check is being redeposited after bouncing, or if the bank has reasonable cause to doubt it will clear.5HelpWithMyBank.gov. Why Your Personal Limits May Differ
Two customers at the same bank can see very different ATM deposit limits. Account type is the biggest driver. A basic checking account usually carries lower daily caps and longer holds than a premium or business account. Customers with high balances and no overdraft history tend to see thresholds loosen over time.
The machine itself matters too. ATMs inside your bank’s branches and its branded standalone locations offer the widest deposit options and highest per-transaction limits. Partner-network and third-party ATMs often disable the deposit function for non-customers entirely.
The $10,000 Reporting Rule
Federal law requires banks to report cash transactions above $10,000. Under the Bank Secrecy Act, any deposit, withdrawal, or currency exchange that exceeds that amount in a single day triggers a Currency Transaction Report (CTR), filed electronically with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN).6eCFR. 31 CFR 1010.311 – Filing Obligations for Reports of Transactions in Currency The bank must file within 15 calendar days of the transaction.7Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. Frequently Asked Questions Regarding the FinCEN Currency Transaction Report It applies whether you deposited the cash at a teller, at an ATM, or across multiple transactions totaling more than $10,000 on the same day.
A CTR by itself is not an accusation. Banks file them routinely, and there is no penalty for making a large deposit.
Why Splitting Up Deposits Is a Crime
Breaking a large cash deposit into smaller ones to stay under $10,000 is a federal offense called structuring. The source of the money doesn’t matter. Arranging transactions specifically to avoid the reporting requirement is itself the crime. A conviction carries up to five years in prison, and when structuring is part of a broader pattern involving more than $100,000 in a year, the maximum doubles to ten years.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 31 USC 5324 – Structuring Transactions to Evade Reporting Requirement Prohibited
The government can also seize the money through civil forfeiture of property connected to a structuring violation.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 31 USC 5317 – Search and Forfeiture of Monetary Instruments On top of that, banks file Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) when they spot transactions that look arranged to dodge CTR filings, with a $5,000 threshold triggering the obligation.10Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Suspicious Activity Reporting Requirements If you have a legitimate reason to deposit a large sum, deposit it in one go.
When the ATM Shorts You or Loses a Deposit
ATMs miscount bills, fail to credit deposits, and occasionally jam mid-transaction. Regulation E, the federal rule covering electronic fund transfers, gives you a path to recover.
You have 60 days from the date your bank sends the statement showing the error to notify the bank of the problem.11eCFR. Electronic Fund Transfers (Regulation E) Call first and follow up in writing. Once notified, the bank has 10 business days to investigate and resolve the dispute. It can extend the investigation to 45 calendar days, but only if it provisionally credits your account for the disputed amount within the original 10-business-day window.12Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Regulation E – Electronic Fund Transfers That provisional credit means you have access to the money while the inquiry continues.
Keep every ATM receipt. If the machine returns an error or no receipt, write down the date, time, location, and amount right away. Clear records are what move an ATM error claim quickly.
