Army Rifle Grouping and Zeroing: 25-Meter Target and Sight Clicks

Army rifle grouping and zeroing is the process of firing tight shot groups at 25 meters and adjusting the sights until the point of impact matches the point of aim. The Army sets a clear gate: all rounds in a group must fit inside a 4-centimeter circle, and that group’s center must sit on the target’s center. Miss either half of that standard and the weapon is not zeroed. What follows is the full sequence, from pre-fire checks through confirmation, for the M4 with the M68, M150, or backup iron sights.

Prep the Weapon Before You Fire a Shot

Sight adjustments only mean something on a weapon that is mechanically sound. The operator’s manual calls for a full preventive maintenance check first: seat and lock the magazine, check the barrel for looseness by hand, inspect for missing or damaged parts, confirm the sights adjust freely, and run a function check. Skip this and you will burn ammunition chasing a problem that isn’t in the sights.

Set Mechanical Zero

Mechanical zero is the known baseline the sights start from. On the M4 carbine, rotate the rear elevation knob counterclockwise until it stops at the 6/3 (300-meter) mark, then center the rear windage aperture. Leave the front sight post where it was set at the factory or by the last shooter. This puts the sights close enough that the first rounds should land on paper.

Boresight With a Laser

A laser boresight aligns the optic or sights with the bore before the first live round. The procedure needs two soldiers and a 10-meter boresight target. Seat the boresight device in the muzzle with a 5.56 mm mandrel, then zero the device itself by rotating it slowly 180 degrees; if the dot drifts, turn the boresight’s own adjusters until the dot holds steady through a full spin.

With the device zeroed, one soldier holds the boresight target at 10 meters while the firer adjusts the optic until the laser dot sits centered on the boresight circle at the same time the optic crosshair or front sight post is aligned on the target’s crosshair. A good boresight puts the first live rounds near center and cuts the number of shot groups needed to finish zeroing.

The 25-Meter Target and the 4 cm Standard

The Army 25-meter zeroing target is a gridded sheet where each square corresponds to a known amount of bullet movement at that distance. Write your name, the date, and the weapon’s serial number on every target so the paper trail ties back to the specific rifle. The standard round is the M855A1 Enhanced Performance Round; its trajectory matches the older M855 ball closely enough that zeroing data carries over between the two.

The grouping standard is simple. Every round in a string must fit inside a 4-centimeter circle. A group that meets this standard proves you are consistent enough for sight adjustments to actually mean something. Scattered rounds don’t get fixed by clicking knobs; adjusting sights on a bad group just chases noise. Four centimeters at 25 meters scales out to reliable hits on a human-sized silhouette at 300 meters, which is why the Army treats it as the threshold for a valid zero.

Fire a Group You Can Actually Use

TC 3-22.9 breaks every shot into four elements. A scattered group almost always traces back to one of them, and knowing which saves time on the line.

  • Stability. In the prone supported position used for zeroing, the ground and a sandbag or bipod carry the rifle’s weight. Your body provides a rigid platform through the recoil pulse. Muscling the rifle into position instead of building a stable platform is the most common cause of scattered groups.
  • Aim. The continuous work of aligning the sights and placing them on the same point on the target. With iron sights, the front sight post sits centered in the rear aperture, equal light on both sides, tops level. With an optic, the crosshair or dot sits on the target with a consistent cheek weld.
  • Control. What you consciously do before, during, and after the shot. Trigger control is the centerpiece: a smooth, straight-to-the-rear press that does not disturb the sights. Jerking or slapping the trigger shifts the muzzle at the worst possible moment.
  • Movement. Reacquiring the target and managing recoil recovery between rounds. From a static prone position this is minimal, but you still have to settle back onto the same point of aim after each shot.

Check Natural Point of Aim First

Natural point of aim is where the barrel orients when your muscles are relaxed and the position is fully supported. If the sights drift off target when you relax, your body will fight to hold them there during the shot, and that muscle tension will spread your group. To check, place the sights on target, relax completely, and give your body a small shake. If the sights settle back on the aiming point, you’re good. If they settle somewhere else, shift your whole body around a fixed pivot like an elbow or foot until they do.

Fire and Mark the Group

With natural point of aim confirmed, fire a string of rounds using the same aiming point every shot. Steady breathing and a smooth trigger press keep the muzzle from shifting between rounds. Once the range is called safe, walk forward and find the tightest cluster of holes on the target. Mark its center. That center is the Mean Point of Impact, the average location your rifle is putting rounds right now. Every calculation that follows depends on measuring the distance from this point to the center of the target, so mark it carefully.

Calculate and Apply the Sight Adjustment

The grid on the 25-meter target does the measuring for you. Count the squares between your group center and the target center, both horizontally and vertically, then convert squares to clicks using the ratio for your sighting system.

M68 Close Combat Optic

The M68 CCO is a red-dot with windage and elevation adjustment knobs. At 25 meters, three clicks move the bullet impact approximately one square on the zeroing target. If your Mean Point of Impact sits two squares left and one square low, dial six clicks right and three clicks up.

M150 Rifle Combat Optic

The M150 RCO, based on the Trijicon ACOG, uses the same ratio: three clicks per square at 25 meters. Its adjustment knobs sit under protective caps on top and on the side of the optic. The magnification and reticle differ from the M68, but at zeroing distance the click math is identical.

Backup Iron Sights

Iron sights follow different mechanical rules. The front sight post controls elevation. Rotate the front post down into the sight housing to raise the point of impact; lowering the front post forces you to tilt the barrel upward to realign the sights. The rear sight aperture controls windage, and it moves in the intuitive direction: move the rear sight right, the strike shifts right on the target.

Click values for iron sights differ from optical sights and vary between the M16 and M4, so check the reference chart printed on or issued with the zeroing target. The principle holds either way: count the squares, multiply by the clicks-per-square ratio for your system, and apply the adjustment in the correct direction.

Apply the Clicks Carefully

For the M68 and M150, remove the protective caps from the elevation and windage knobs, turn each knob the counted number of clicks, and replace the caps. Each click should be distinct and audible. Miscount by one or two and your next group will be off, and you start over.

Confirm the Zero and Record It

Return to your firing position and fire another group. The confirmation group has to meet two criteria: the rounds still fit within the 4-centimeter standard, and the Mean Point of Impact now sits centered in the zero zone. If the group is tight but still offset, repeat the measurement-and-adjustment cycle. If the group has opened up, the problem is shooter consistency, not the sights, and fundamentals need work before another adjustment.

A confirmed zero means point of aim and point of impact match at 25 meters, and the ballistic relationship holds at longer distances. Tighten the protective caps on the optic before leaving the position. A loose cap or a bumped knob can undo the whole process without you knowing until the next range day.

A zero is only useful if you can verify and reproduce it. Record the final sight settings, the number of clicks from mechanical zero in each direction, the date, and the weapon serial number. DA Form 3595-R covers record fire qualification scoring, not zeroing data, so zeroing details are typically noted on the target itself, in the remarks section of the scorecard, or in the unit’s individual training records as the chain of command directs.

Re-zero after any significant change: a new optic mounted to the weapon, a hard impact to the sighting system, a switch to a different ammunition type, or a return from long-term storage. Switching between M855 and M855A1 should not require re-zeroing because their trajectories match; any other ammunition change warrants a fresh confirmation group. Keep optic caps tightened after every range session and make sure iron sight posts do not spin freely. A zero recorded on paper but lost to a loose knob on a road march is no zero at all.
