Army promotion points for Sergeant and Staff Sergeant are scored on an 800-point scale built from four categories — military training, awards, military education, and civilian education — and your monthly standing depends on how your total compares to the cutoff score published for your MOS. Army Regulation 600-8-19 sets the caps, the documentation rules, and the eligibility gates that decide whether your points actually move you off the recommended list.1Department of the Army. Army Regulation 600-8-19 – Enlisted Promotions and Demotions
The Four Categories and Their Caps
Both ranks max out at 800 points, but the weighting shifts. Sergeant leans harder on weapons and fitness. Staff Sergeant leans harder on formal education and awards.
Promotion to Sergeant, category maximums:
- Military training: 280 points
- Awards and decorations: 145 points
- Military education: 240 points
- Civilian education: 135 points
Promotion to Staff Sergeant, category maximums:
- Military training: 230 points
- Awards and decorations: 165 points
- Military education: 245 points
- Civilian education: 160 points
Military Training: ACFT and Weapons
Military training points come from two sources that together fill the 280-point ceiling for SGT or 230-point ceiling for SSG.
Your raw Army Combat Fitness Test score converts to promotion points on a scaling table, and the maximum you can earn from the ACFT is 120 points for both ranks. Raw scores flow into IPPS-A automatically from the Army Training Management System, but the word “automatic” is doing a lot of work there. Confirm the score actually posted.
Weapons points come off your most recent record fire with your assigned weapon. Expert beats Sharpshooter beats Marksman. A Specialist competing for SGT can earn up to 160 points for marksmanship. A Sergeant competing for SSG is capped at 110. Weapons data also feeds in from the training management system; if the qualification doesn’t appear, the fix has to happen at the source.
Awards, Badges, and Tabs
Individual awards carry fixed values against the 145-point cap for SGT or 165-point cap for SSG. The common ones:
- Army Commendation Medal: 20 points each
- Army Achievement Medal: 10 points each
- Good Conduct Medal: 10 points per award
Values stack. Two ARCOMs are 40 points, three AAMs are 30.
Combat badges sit near the top of this category. The Combat Infantryman Badge, Combat Medical Badge, and Combat Action Badge each earn 30 points. Special skill badges scale by proficiency: the basic Parachutist Badge earns 10 points, Senior Parachutist earns 15, and Master Parachutist earns 20. The Air Assault Badge and the Driver and Mechanic Badge each carry 10.
The Ranger, Special Forces, and Sapper Tabs are worth 40 points apiece, the single highest value for any badge or tab in the system. All phases of the qualifying course have to be complete before points post.
Military Education
Military education caps at 240 points for SGT and 245 for SSG, and it draws from resident training, correspondence and online courses, and PME honors.
Resident Courses
Courses formally listed in the Army Training Requirements and Resources System earn four promotion points per week of training, where a week is 40 training hours. The resident sub-cap is 110 points for SGT and 115 for SSG. Not every course qualifies — MOS-producing courses, basic training, badge-producing courses, and language training are all excluded.
Correspondence and Online Training
Courses completed through ATRRS self-development or Army e-Learning earn one promotion point for every five hours of coursework. Only fully completed courses count. The sub-cap is 90 points for both SGT and SSG, which works out to 450 hours of finished online training to max out. This is the category most soldiers can grow on their own time.
BLC and ALC Honors
Graduating the Basic Leader Course or Advanced Leader Course is required to pin on the rank, but doing well there also pays. Commandant’s list at BLC adds 20 promotion points for SGT candidates. Distinguished Honor Graduate or Distinguished Leadership Graduate at BLC adds 40. The same tiers apply at ALC for SSG candidates.
Civilian Education
College coursework from an accredited institution earns two promotion points per semester hour, counted against the 135-point cap for SGT or 160-point cap for SSG. Only classes on an official transcript from a federally accredited school qualify, and the transcript must bear the university seal.
The arithmetic is simple. Sixty semester hours (roughly an associate degree) is 120 civilian education points. Sixty-eight semester hours maxes the SGT cap at 135. Eighty semester hours maxes the SSG cap at 160. If you’re already using tuition assistance, every class is working on a degree and a promotion score at once.
Eligibility Gates Before Points Count
Points don’t matter until you clear the time and PME requirements.
For Sergeant primary zone, you need 36 months of time in service and 12 months of time in grade as a Specialist or Corporal. The secondary zone lowers those to 18 months TIS and 6 months TIG. For Staff Sergeant primary zone, the numbers are 72 months TIS and 18 months TIG as a Sergeant. SSG secondary zone is 48 months TIS and 8 months TIG.2CutoffScores.com. Under the Select-Train-Educate-Promote policy, PME is a hard prerequisite for pinning on. You must graduate BLC to pin on SGT and ALC to pin on SSG. You can be on the list with enough points to clear the cutoff, but without the PME graduation on record, promotion does not happen. If your seat keeps slipping, push your chain of command to escalate the request.
Flags That Freeze Promotion
You can have 800 points and every eligibility box checked and still be non-promotable. AR 600-8-19 lists more than a dozen disqualifying conditions. The ones that catch soldiers most often:
- Any UCMJ action, including suspended punishment, throughout the forfeiture period and until restriction or extra duty is complete
- Noncompliance with the Army Body Composition Program or failure to complete a required fitness test
- Pending commander’s investigation, law enforcement investigation, or Relief for Cause NCOER
- Command-referred enrollment in the Army Substance Abuse Program (self-referral does not flag you)
- A qualifying domestic violence conviction under the Lautenberg Amendment, which is a permanent disqualification
- An approved field or HQDA bar to reenlistment
Check your flag status before spending time chasing points. One unresolved flag makes the rest of your worksheet meaningless.
Documenting and Verifying Your Score
Points count only when the paperwork backs them up. Awards are documented on DA Form 638 with the appropriate chain of command endorsements.3U.S. Army Human Resources Command. Basic Information Required for Submission of a Retroactive Award Recommendation Military schooling is confirmed by DA Form 1059, which records course completion and any commandant’s list or honor graduate status. Civilian education requires the sealed official transcript. Fitness and weapons flow in electronically, but signed scorecards are your backup when the feed fails.
Bring your documents to your Battalion S-1 for entry into the Integrated Personnel and Pay System-Army. Feeds from the training management system and ATRRS are automatic in theory; in practice, a course showing “enrolled” instead of “graduated” needs to be corrected at the source before your points update.4Integrated Personnel and Pay System-Army. The 26th of the Month
Every transaction has to hit IPPS-A by the 26th of the month to affect that cycle’s scores. Data entered on March 3rd affects the May 1st cutoff, not April’s. Miss the 26th by a day and you wait a full month. If your documents are ready, don’t sit on them.
Monthly Cutoff Scores and Why MOS Matters More Than 800
Each month, the Army publishes a cutoff score for every MOS, separately for SGT and SSG. Meet or exceed the cutoff for your MOS with all eligibility cleared, and you promote. Fall short and you stay on the recommended list for the next cycle.
Cutoffs move with manning needs. An overstaffed MOS can sit near the top of the scale, sometimes 798, which effectively freezes promotions in that specialty. An undermanned MOS can drop to a very low number, or come in as “BY” (below the zone), promoting everyone on the recommended list. Watching several months of your MOS trend gives you a realistic target instead of a theoretical 800.2CutoffScores.com. HQDA Promotion Point Cutoff Scores for 01 April 2026
The most common mistake is chasing total points without watching the trend. A soldier with 550 points in an MOS holding at a 400 cutoff pins on months before a soldier sitting at 700 in an MOS locked at 798. Grow your score, but grow it against the specific competitive picture in your specialty.
