Who Qualifies
Each person in the group has to meet the Army’s standard enlistment requirements: U.S. citizenship or permanent residency, an age between 17 and 32, and a high school diploma.1U.S. Army. The shared-MOS rule is the real constraint. Every member has to qualify for the same job, which means matching the aptitude scores and physical standards it requires. If one friend can’t clear the bar for the MOS the group wants, the group has to pick a different job or that person drops out of the buddy arrangement. Where the Guarantee Ends
The promise covers training and the first assignment. Nothing after that. Once the group arrives at that first duty station, everyone is subject to the Army’s normal personnel system. Reassignments, deployments, and promotions can send members of a buddy group to different units or installations whenever the service needs it. The program smooths the entry into military life; it is not a lasting arrangement.
How the Three-Year Contract Affects Bonuses
Signing on for three years is shorter than the contracts that unlock the largest enlistment bonuses. Buddy Enlistment in Other Branches
If the Army version doesn’t fit, other branches run their own. The Navy allows up to four recruits to attend boot camp together at Naval Station Great Lakes in Illinois, provided they process at MEPS and ship out on the same day.4DVIDS.
