Army Brigade Combat Team: Types, Structure, and Costs

An Army Brigade Combat Team, or BCT, is the service’s basic combined-arms fighting unit: roughly 4,000 soldiers packaged with infantry or armor, artillery, reconnaissance, engineers, and logistics so a colonel can command the whole force and move it as one.1Congressional Research Service. The Four Types of Brigade Combat Team

Each variant is built around a different vehicle platform and a different fight. The heavier the equipment, the more combat power the brigade carries and the longer it takes to get anywhere.

Armored Brigade Combat Team

The ABCT is the Army’s heaviest ground formation, built around M1 Abrams main battle tanks and M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles. It carries the most combat power of any BCT type and is the force of choice for high-intensity conventional warfare against enemy mechanized forces. It is also the slowest to deploy. Moving an ABCT overseas usually means putting 70-ton tanks on ships.

Stryker Brigade Combat Team

The SBCT sits in the middle of the weight spectrum. Instead of tracked tanks and Bradleys, it uses the eight-wheeled Stryker family of armored vehicles, which give infantry squads protected mobility while remaining light enough to load onto transport aircraft. An SBCT carries roughly 3,500 soldiers and is designed to fight combined arms down to the company level.3GlobalSecurity.org. Infantry Brigade Combat Team

The IBCT is the Army’s lightest formation, relying on foot-mobile soldiers supported by light tactical vehicles and helicopters. That light footprint cuts both ways. The Army can fly an IBCT into a theater faster than any other BCT type, and these units do well in restrictive terrain like mountains, jungles, and dense urban areas where heavy vehicles cannot go. They also lack the protected firepower and ground mobility of their heavier counterparts, which leaves them vulnerable in open terrain against mechanized opponents.1Congressional Research Service. Mobile Brigade Combat Team

Starting in fiscal year 2026, the Army is converting all 14 Infantry Brigade Combat Teams into a new formation called the Mobile Brigade Combat Team. The MBCT is meant to close the IBCT’s mobility gap by equipping units with Infantry Squad Vehicles and other assets that add speed and lethality while keeping the formation leaner than an ABCT or SBCT. What’s Inside a BCT

The equipment changes between types, but the functional pieces are the same. Maneuver battalions do the fighting, and a ring of supporting battalions keeps them in it.

Maneuver Battalions

These are the main striking force. In an ABCT they are combined-arms battalions built around tanks and Bradleys. In an SBCT they are infantry battalions mounted in Strykers. In an IBCT they are light infantry battalions. They close with and destroy enemy forces, seize terrain, and hold ground. The original modular design used two per brigade; the Army later added a third to increase combat power.

Cavalry Squadron

Every BCT has an organic cavalry or reconnaissance squadron whose job is to find the enemy before the maneuver battalions have to. It runs reconnaissance patrols, screens the brigade’s flanks, and provides early warning. In an ABCT the cavalry squadron operates armored vehicles and is expected to develop the situation through aggressive scouting so the brigade commander can decide where to commit the main force.4U.S. Army. Field Artillery Battalion

Artillery provides indirect fire, meaning it hits targets the maneuver battalions cannot see or reach with direct-fire weapons. An ABCT fires self-propelled howitzers. Lighter BCTs use towed howitzers that can be moved by helicopter. The battalion suppresses enemy positions, disrupts formations, opens gaps for maneuver forces to exploit, and coordinates with higher-echelon fires including rockets and joint air support.

Brigade Engineer Battalion

Engineers handle three overlapping missions: mobility, counter-mobility, and survivability. On offense, they breach obstacles like minefields and barriers. On defense, they emplace obstacles and demolitions to slow the enemy. Throughout any operation, they build fighting positions, improve roads, and construct field fortifications. They also handle explosive ordnance disposal and route clearance.

Brigade Support Battalion

The support battalion keeps the brigade fed, fueled, armed, and healthy. It runs supply distribution, vehicle and equipment maintenance, and transportation. Its medical company provides trauma care at the point of injury and can perform damage-control surgery to stabilize casualties before evacuation.5U.S. Army Medical Center of Excellence. Where the BCT Sits in the Army

A colonel commands the BCT, with a command sergeant major as senior enlisted advisor. Above the brigade sits the division, usually containing two to four BCTs along with division-level artillery, aviation, and sustainment brigades. A two-star major general commands a division of 10,000 to 15,000 soldiers, coordinates operations among its BCTs, allocates resources like attack helicopters and long-range fires, and connects to corps and joint assets. A corps of 20,000 to 45,000 soldiers, led by a three-star lieutenant general, provides the next layer of command.

The modular design was meant to make BCTs more independent, but no BCT really fights alone in a major conflict. Division and corps headquarters supply intelligence, additional fires, air defense, cyber capabilities, and logistics that exceed what any single brigade can carry.

How Fast a BCT Can Deploy

Deployability was one of the main reasons the Army reorganized around brigades in the first place. Speed depends on type. IBCTs (and soon MBCTs) move fastest because they carry the least heavy equipment. The Army’s stated planning goal has been to put an IBCT-sized force anywhere in the world within 96 hours of liftoff, a full warfighting division on the ground within 120 hours, and five divisions within 30 days.6Defense Technical Information Center. SBCTs fall in the middle, deployable by air but requiring more sorties than an IBCT. ABCTs are slowest and typically rely on sealift.

Once in theater, a BCT can operate across the full range of military operations: conventional warfare against a peer adversary, counterinsurgency, peacekeeping, security force assistance, and humanitarian relief. The Current BCT Fleet

For fiscal year 2026, the active Army includes 31 Brigade Combat Teams: 11 Armored, 6 Stryker, and 14 Infantry or Mobile. Alongside the BCT fleet, the Army maintains 2 Security Force Assistance Brigades and 11 Combat Aviation Brigades.2Congressional Research Service. The 2026 changes go beyond the IBCT-to-MBCT conversion. The Army plans to activate two additional HIMARS rocket artillery battalions and three HIMARS batteries, inactivate air cavalry squadrons, and resize aerial medical evacuation units.2Congressional Research Service. What a BCT Costs to Operate

A single Armored Brigade Combat Team costs roughly $690 million per year in direct expenses like personnel and equipment, according to a 2021 Congressional Budget Office analysis, with support costs from other units adding another $1.1 billion. Once overhead for administration and institutional support is folded in, the total annual price tag reaches about $3.16 billion. Lighter BCTs cost less because they field fewer vehicles and burn less fuel, but they still represent a substantial investment, which is why force-structure decisions get close attention from both the Army and Congress.
