Federal stimulus checks were real, but the program is over. Three rounds of Economic Impact Payments went out between 2020 and 2021, the deadlines to claim any you missed have both passed, and no new federal round has been signed into law. If you are hearing about a stimulus check in 2026, it is almost certainly a state tax rebate, a proposed bill that has not passed, or a scam.
What the Federal Government Actually Sent
Three rounds of Economic Impact Payments were authorized by Congress during the pandemic: the CARES Act in March 2020, the COVID-related Tax Relief Act of 2020 in December of that year, and the American Rescue Plan Act in 2021.1U.S. Department of the Treasury. Economic Impact Payments The IRS has confirmed that all three rounds have been fully issued, and the Get My Payment tracking tool is no longer available.2Internal Revenue Service. People who never received the first or second payment had until May 17, 2024 to claim it as a 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit. The third payment could be claimed as a 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit through April 15, 2025.3Internal Revenue Service. IRS Reminds Eligible 2020 and 2021 Non-Filers to Claim Recovery Rebate Credit Before Time Runs Out Both deadlines are gone. Unclaimed funds reverted to the U.S. Treasury after the statutory three-year window, and there is no extension, appeals process, or exception. A lot of the online noise about “unclaimed stimulus money” comes from old articles that were accurate when written and keep circulating anyway.
Is a Fourth Federal Stimulus Check Coming
Not right now. No law currently authorizes a new round of federal payments. A bill was introduced in July 2025, S.2475, the American Worker Rebate Act of 2025, which would create a rebate of at least $600 per eligible individual plus $600 per qualifying child, tied to tariff revenue collected during the 2025 tax year, with advance payments required before December 31, 2026.4Congress.gov. S.2475 – 119th Congress – American Worker Rebate Act of 2025
Introduced is not passed. Most bills never leave committee, and no payments are authorized until a bill is signed into law. If a headline says “new stimulus checks approved,” look for the name of a specific signed law before you believe it.
State Rebates Are What People Usually Mean
When someone tells you they got a stimulus check recently, they almost always received a state program. Several states have returned surplus tax revenue to residents in recent years. Georgia, for example, authorized surplus refunds of up to $250 for single filers, $375 for heads of household, and $500 for joint filers based on tax year 2024 liability.
These programs are tied to state budget conditions and vary widely. Eligibility generally requires that you filed a state return for the relevant year and had some state tax liability. Some states pay a flat amount by filing status, others calculate a percentage of what you owed, and recent amounts have run roughly $150 to $500. There is no single national database of active state rebates. Your state’s department of revenue website is the reliable place to check.
Do You Have to Pay Tax on These Payments
Federal Economic Impact Payments were not taxable income. They did not increase what you owed, reduce your refund, or need to be reported on your federal return, because they functioned as advance refundable tax credits.2Internal Revenue Service. Economic Impact Payments
State rebates follow different rules. Under IRS Notice 2023-56, state payments that function as tax refunds are generally not includable in federal gross income for most people. If you took the standard deduction in the year you paid the underlying state taxes, the rebate is not federally taxable. If you itemized and deducted your state income taxes, part or all of the rebate could be taxable under the tax benefit rule.5Internal Revenue Service. Notice 2023-56 – Federal Income Tax Consequences of Certain State Payments Most taxpayers take the standard deduction, so most state rebates will not create a federal tax bill.
How to Tell a Real IRS Contact From a Scam
Knowing how the IRS actually reaches you is the best defense. Initial contact comes by physical mail sent to the address on your most recent return. The agency does not open contact through email or social media, and it only sends texts if you have specifically opted in.6Internal Revenue Service. The clearest signs a “stimulus” message is fake:
- It asks you to pay a fee, tax, or processing cost upfront. No government agency charges you to receive a payment.
- It asks for gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers. The government never uses these.
- It arrives as an unsolicited text or email with a link. The IRS does not send links in unsolicited messages, and the link usually points to a spoofed site built to steal your Social Security number and bank credentials.
- It comes as a direct message on social media. Real government employees do not contact you through Facebook Messenger, Instagram, or WhatsApp about payments.
- It uses an artificial deadline, warning that a check will be “forfeited” or “expire” within hours. Urgency is the point; it stops you from checking.
