Yes, referral bonuses are taxable. The IRS treats them as compensation for services rather than gifts, so federal income tax applies whether you’re paid in cash, a gift card, merchandise, or airline miles. What changes with the form of payment and the identity of the payer is how the tax gets collected and where the income lands on your return.
If Your Employer Pays the Bonus
A referral bonus from your employer counts as supplemental wages, the same tax category as commissions and overtime. Your employer withholds payroll taxes from it just like a regular paycheck.1Internal Revenue Service. Publication 525 – Taxable and Nontaxable Income
Social Security tax comes out at 6.2% on wages up to $184,500 in 2026, and Medicare tax at 1.45% with no cap.2Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 751 Social Security and Medicare Withholding Rates If your year-to-date wages have already crossed the Social Security cap, the bonus won’t have Social Security tax withheld, but Medicare still applies.3Social Security Administration. Contribution and Benefit Base
For federal income tax, your employer either withholds a flat 22% (the percentage method for supplemental wages under $1 million) or lumps the bonus in with your regular pay and withholds based on your W-4 (the aggregate method).4Internal Revenue Service. Publication 15, Employer’s Tax Guide The flat 22% often withholds more than you actually owe if your marginal bracket is 10% or 12%. That’s not lost money. You get it back as a bigger refund or smaller balance due when you file.
The full bonus shows up in Box 1 of your W-2, with taxes withheld in Boxes 2, 4, and 6. You don’t need to report it separately.
If You Don’t Work for the Company Paying You
When a company pays you a referral bonus and you’re not on its payroll, nothing gets withheld. You receive the full amount and owe the taxes yourself.
Whether You’ll Get a 1099-NEC
For payments made after December 31, 2025, the reporting threshold for non-employee compensation rose from $600 to $2,000. If a company pays you $2,000 or more in referral income during the year, it has to send you Form 1099-NEC and file a copy with the IRS.5Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1099-NEC and Independent Contractors Below $2,000, no form is required.
The threshold governs the company’s paperwork, not your tax liability. A $500 referral bonus is taxable even if no 1099 ever arrives. The IRS runs automated matching on information returns, so a missing 1099-NEC is a common trigger for a notice, but the underlying rule is simpler: report the income either way.
Where the Income Goes on Your Return
A one-off referral bonus goes on Schedule 1 as other income.6Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1099-NEC Regular income tax applies, but you don’t owe self-employment tax.
If you refer people regularly and with continuity, that activity looks like a trade or business, and the income belongs on Schedule C.7Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Schedule C (Form 1040) On top of income tax you’ll owe self-employment tax at 15.3% (12.4% Social Security and 2.9% Medicare), with half of the SE tax deductible when you calculate adjusted gross income.8Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 554, Self-Employment Tax
Estimated Payments
Because nothing was withheld, a big referral bonus can leave you short at filing time. If you expect to owe $1,000 or more for the year after withholding and refundable credits, you generally need to make quarterly estimated payments using Form 1040-ES.9Internal Revenue Service. Estimated Taxes Skipping them can add underpayment penalties on top of the tax.
Gift Cards, Merchandise, and Miles
Non-cash rewards are taxed at fair market value.1Internal Revenue Service. Publication 525 – Taxable and Nontaxable Income For a gift card, FMV is the face value. A $200 card adds $200 to your taxable income.
Gift cards don’t qualify for the de minimis fringe benefit exclusion, regardless of denomination. The IRS treats them as cash equivalents, and cash and cash equivalents are categorically excluded from that carve-out.10Internal Revenue Service. Cash or Non-Cash Fringe Benefits The de minimis rule covers things like a company pen or a cup of coffee.11Internal Revenue Service. De Minimis Fringe Benefits
For merchandise or travel vouchers, use the arm’s-length price a buyer would actually pay, not the puffed-up “retail value” on the promo or the wholesale price the company paid.
Airline miles and loyalty points are their own case. Under Announcement 2002-18, the IRS doesn’t tax frequent flyer miles earned from business or official travel.12Internal Revenue Service. Announcement 2002-18 That safe harbor explicitly does not cover miles awarded for referrals, opening accounts, or similar promotional activity. Those are taxable at fair market value. If the issuer puts a dollar figure on a 1099, use that; otherwise, report a reasonable estimate.
What Happens If You Don’t Report It
The IRS can stack penalties on unreported referral income:
- Failure to file: 5% of unpaid tax per month the return is late, capped at 25%.13Internal Revenue Service. Failure to File Penalty
- Failure to pay: 0.5% per month, also capped at 25%. The rate drops to 0.25% per month if you file on time and set up an installment agreement.14Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 653, IRS Notices and Bills, Penalties and Interest Charges
- Accuracy-related penalty: 20% of the underpaid amount if the IRS finds you substantially understated your income.15Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6662 – Imposition of Accuracy-Related Penalty on Underpayments
A Few Situations That Change the Math
If your combined wages and self-employment income top $200,000 for a single filer or $250,000 for joint filers, an Additional Medicare Tax of 0.9% applies to the excess.16Internal Revenue Service. Questions and Answers for the Additional Medicare Tax Your employer starts withholding it once your wages cross $200,000; for non-employee referral income, you handle it at filing.
If you’re a nonresident alien receiving a referral bonus from a U.S. company, the default federal withholding rate is 30%, and the payment is reported on Form 1042-S rather than a W-2 or 1099-NEC.17Internal Revenue Service. NRA Withholding A tax treaty may lower that rate, but you have to give the payer a completed Form W-8BEN before the payment goes out.
State income tax is a separate layer. Most states with an income tax will pick up the referral bonus too, at rates that vary by state. A few states don’t tax individual income at all.
