Whether gift cards are taxed as income depends entirely on who gave you the card. A gift card from your employer is taxable wages no matter how small, and the full value gets added to your W-2. A gift card from a friend or family member is not taxable to you at all. A card you won as a prize or received for opening a bank account is taxable other income. A card you earned as a credit card reward for spending money usually is not.
Gift Cards From Your Employer Are Always Taxable
The IRS treats employer-provided gift cards as cash equivalents, so the full face value is taxable income regardless of the amount. A $10 coffee shop card handed out at a holiday party is treated the same as a $500 retail card given as a year-end bonus. The value is added to your wages and is subject to federal income tax withholding, Social Security tax, and Medicare tax.1Internal Revenue Service. De Minimis Fringe Benefits
The reason is written into the law. When an employer transfers something of value to an employee, the general income exclusion for gifts doesn’t apply.2GovInfo. 26 USC 102 – Gifts and Inheritances The only possible escape would be the de minimis fringe benefit rule, which covers perks so small and infrequent that tracking them would be unreasonable. Treasury regulations shut that door for gift cards: cash and cash equivalents are never excludable as de minimis fringes.3eCFR. 26 CFR 1.132-6 – De Minimis Fringes A gift card has a dollar value printed on it, so the administrative-impracticability argument fails.
One narrow exception exists. A certificate redeemable only for a specific, pre-selected item of minimal value, like the classic holiday turkey, can qualify as de minimis. A card for a general-merchandise retailer, where you choose from a wide range of products, does not.4Internal Revenue Service. Publication 15-A (2026), Employers Supplemental Tax Guide
What That Looks Like on Your Paycheck
Your employer adds the face value of the card to your wages for the pay period when you receive it. Federal income tax withholding, your share of Social Security (6.2%), and Medicare (1.45%) all come out, and the amount shows up as wages on your W-2.1Internal Revenue Service. De Minimis Fringe Benefits Because gift cards are supplemental wages, your employer can withhold federal income tax at the flat 22% supplemental rate instead of using your W-4 bracket.5Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Publication 15-T – Federal Income Tax Withholding Methods
If no gross-up is applied, a $100 gift card actually costs you money, because the withholding is pulled from your regular paycheck. Some employers gross up the amount, adding extra taxable wages to cover your tax hit so you walk away with the full $100 after taxes. Whether that happens is up to the employer.
Gift Cards as Prizes, Bonuses, or Contractor Payments
A gift card you receive as a contest prize, raffle winning, or promotional giveaway is taxable other income even though no employer is involved. You report the value on your tax return whether or not you get any paperwork.
For 2026, the reporting threshold on Form 1099-MISC for prizes and awards is $2,000, up from $600 in prior years. If a business pays an independent contractor with a gift card for services performed, that falls on Form 1099-NEC under the same $2,000 threshold for 2026.6Internal Revenue Service. Publication 1099 General Instructions for Certain Information Returns (2026) The higher threshold means fewer forms get issued, but the underlying income is taxable regardless.
Credit Card Rewards and Sign-Up Bonuses
Gift cards earned through credit card rewards or store loyalty programs are generally not taxable. The IRS treats those rewards as a price adjustment on purchases you already made, not as new income. Spend $1,000 on your card, earn a $25 reward card, and that $25 is viewed as a rebate. No 1099, nothing to report.
Rewards you earn without spending anything are different. A bank sign-up bonus paid as a gift card for opening a new account is taxable, because it isn’t tied to a purchase. The bank will usually issue a 1099 if the amount hits the reporting threshold. Referral bonuses, where a company gives you a card for sending them a new customer, work the same way. The dividing line is whether you had to spend money to earn the reward.
Gift Cards From Friends and Family
If a friend or relative gave you a gift card, you owe no income tax on it. Federal law excludes property received as a gift from gross income, and that applies on the recipient’s side.2GovInfo. 26 USC 102 – Gifts and Inheritances Any potential tax liability sits with the giver, and only if their total gifts to you in a year exceed the annual exclusion.
For 2026, that annual exclusion is $19,000 per recipient. Married couples who elect gift splitting can give up to $38,000 to the same person in a year.7Internal Revenue Service. Frequently Asked Questions on Gift Taxes Personal gift cards almost never come anywhere near those numbers, so gift tax is a non-issue for ordinary birthday and holiday giving.
Donating a Gift Card to Charity
If you turn around and donate a gift card to a qualified 501(c)(3), you can claim a charitable deduction. A card redeemable for cash is treated as a cash contribution at face value; a store-specific card not exchangeable for cash is deducted at fair market value, usually the face amount.8Internal Revenue Service. Keep a record showing the charity’s name, the date, and the amount. For donations of $250 or more, you need a written acknowledgment from the charity stating the amount and whether you received anything in return.8Internal Revenue Service.
