Are banks closed on Election Day? For most customers, no. Election Day is not one of the eleven federal holidays, so the Federal Reserve’s payment systems keep running and the large majority of banks keep normal branch hours on November 3, 2026. A minority of state-chartered banks in states that treat Election Day as a civic holiday may close, but nationally chartered banks in those same states almost always stay open.
Why Election Day Isn’t a Federal Bank Holiday
Federal law lists eleven public holidays. Election Day isn’t one of them.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 5 USC 6103 – Holidays The Federal Reserve builds its schedule around those eleven days, and its 2026 calendar treats Election Day as a regular business day.2Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. Federal Reserve Bank Holiday Schedule
That matters because the Fed runs the plumbing of the U.S. payment system. When the Fed is open, payroll deposits land on time, wire transfers go through, and bill payments clear. Because there’s no Fed pause on Election Day, commercial banks have no operational reason to shut their doors.
Which Banks Might Actually Close
Roughly 19 states and Puerto Rico designate Election Day as a state-level civic holiday. Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Montana, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, and West Virginia are among them. These states typically close state offices (other than election-related ones) to encourage voter participation.
State-chartered banks in those states often follow the state holiday calendar. If the state designates Election Day as a legal holiday, a state-chartered bank may close and any payment deadline that would have fallen that day rolls to the next business day.3Department of Financial Services. National banks are treated differently. Under federal law, a state’s designation of a legal holiday automatically makes that day a legal holiday for national banks in the state, but each bank “may close or remain open” as it chooses.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 12 USC 95 – Emergency Limitations and Restrictions on Business of Members of Federal Reserve System Look for “National” or “N.A.” in the bank’s name to identify one. In practice, the large national banks stay open on Election Day. That can produce a split within a single town: a local community bank closes while the national bank down the street keeps regular hours. If you aren’t sure, check your bank’s website or call the branch a day or two before the election.
Some banks that stay open still adjust hours slightly, opening late or closing early to give employees time to vote. Any change is usually posted at the branch entrance and in the mobile app in the days beforehand.
What Happens to Your Transactions
If your branch does close for a state-designated Election Day holiday, nothing you’ve scheduled disappears. Pending transactions shift to the next business day. Checks deposited before the closure clear on their normal timeline once the bank reopens. Scheduled ACH items, including automatic bill payments and direct deposits, process when the bank resumes operations. Interest on loans and savings continues to accrue regardless of whether the doors are open.
Time-sensitive items need more planning. If you’re wiring funds to close on a home purchase, confirm your bank’s status ahead of time. Where a branch will be closed, you may still be able to send the wire online or through another branch that stays open.
Digital Banking, ATMs, and Instant Payments
Even when a branch closes, digital access stays intact. ATMs run around the clock for cash, balance checks, and deposits. Mobile apps and online portals handle transfers, bill pay, and mobile check deposit at any hour.
Because the Fed’s payment rails are running, electronic transactions post within their standard windows. Direct deposits land on schedule, and online bill payments reach their recipients without delay. The FedNow Service processes instant payments 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, so if your bank participates in FedNow you can send and receive funds in seconds on Election Day whether or not a branch is open.5Federal Reserve. About the FedNow Service Peer-to-peer apps like Zelle and Venmo also keep working because they ride on their own systems or on real-time payment networks rather than branch hours.
Markets and the Postal Service Are Also Open
If you’re wondering whether related services pause, they don’t. The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq don’t list Election Day as a closure for 2026, so stocks trade during regular hours with no early close scheduled for November 3, 2026.6Intercontinental Exchange. NYSE Group Announces 2025, 2026 and 2027 Holiday and Early Closings Calendar The bond market’s recommended calendar, set by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association, also doesn’t list Election Day 2026 as a closure or early-close day; the next November holidays are Veterans Day on November 11 and Thanksgiving on November 26.
The U.S. Postal Service observes the same eleven federal holidays, and Election Day isn’t among them.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 5 USC 6103 – Holidays Post offices keep regular hours, mail moves on its normal schedule, and a payment that depends on a timely postmark won’t be delayed by the election.
