Application Support Center (ASC) Appointment: Prep and Rescheduling

An Application Support Center (ASC) appointment is the short biometrics visit USCIS schedules after you file most immigration applications so the agency can take your fingerprints, photograph, and electronic signature. You’ll get the date, time, and location on a Form I-797C notice in the mail. The visit itself is quick, usually under 30 minutes, but skipping it without rescheduling can cause USCIS to treat your entire case as abandoned and deny it.¹

USCIS uses the biometrics to verify your identity, run an FBI criminal background check, and produce secure documents like green cards and employment authorization cards.² ASC staff cannot accept applications, answer questions about your case, or do anything beyond collecting biometrics.³ For most filings the biometrics fee is already included in your application fee, so you won’t pay anything extra at the door.

What to Bring and How to Prepare

Two items are non-negotiable: your Form I-797C appointment notice and a valid, unexpired photo ID such as a green card, passport, or driver’s license.³ If you received more than one biometrics notice for different filings, bring all of them.⁴

USCIS also recommends printing or saving a copy of the application you filed and reviewing it before your appointment. Staff at the ASC can’t give you one on-site. If English isn’t comfortable for you, bring someone who can translate. Your attorney doesn’t need to come, even if they filed for you.⁴

Dress in everyday clothes. USCIS takes a photograph that may appear on your immigration documents, so uniforms and camouflage patterns aren’t allowed. You’ll be asked to remove hats, head coverings, and eyeglasses for the photo, though religious headwear you wear daily is fine.

You can show up before your scheduled date if the assigned time doesn’t work for you; USCIS policy allows early walk-ins.⁵ On the day itself, plan to arrive about 15 to 30 minutes ahead.

What Happens at the Appointment

You check in by handing over your appointment notice and photo ID. Staff verify who you are, give you an intake form, and then call your number. The collection itself has three steps: a digital fingerprint scan, a photograph, and an electronic signature.

That signature matters. By signing, you attest under penalty of perjury that everything in your application and supporting documents was complete, true, and correct when filed.⁴

If the scanner can’t get legible prints on the first try, the technician will attempt again. Some people, because of age, manual labor, or certain medical conditions, have worn or faded fingerprints that can’t be captured at all. In that situation the USCIS employee at the ASC can grant a fingerprint waiver on the spot, as long as the technician actually attempted collection. The waiver covers only the filing on your notice; a future application would need its own.⁵

Children and Accommodations

Children under 14 don’t have to provide a signature, though they may if they’re able. A parent or legal guardian can sign for the child and should come to the appointment.⁴

Every USCIS facility in the United States is wheelchair accessible, so you don’t need to call ahead just for building access. For other accommodations, submit a request at uscis.gov/accommodations or call the USCIS Contact Center at 800-375-5283 (TTY 800-767-1833) as soon as your notice arrives.⁶ If a serious medical condition keeps you from leaving your home or hospital, you can request a mobile biometrics appointment; instructions are in the disability notice section of your appointment letter.⁴ USCIS also grants fingerprint waivers for applicants who can’t provide prints because of medical conditions such as birth defects, skin conditions, or physical deformities.

Rescheduling Before You Miss It

If the date won’t work, reschedule before the appointment time passes. USCIS requires “good cause,” meaning a genuine reason such as illness, a family emergency, a religious observance, caregiving duties, prepaid travel booked before your notice arrived, or a work obligation you can’t move.⁴

There are two ways to do it:

Online through myUSCIS. Sign in at my.uscis.gov, open your case, and choose the rescheduling option. You have to do this at least 12 hours before the appointment. The online tool won’t work if you’ve already rescheduled twice or the appointment has already passed.
By phone to the USCIS Contact Center at 800-375-5283 (TTY 800-767-1833), Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern. This is your only option if the appointment is less than 12 hours away, you’ve already rescheduled twice online, or you’ve missed it.

USCIS doesn’t accept reschedule requests by mail or in person.⁷

If You Missed Your Appointment

Under federal regulation, when USCIS requires biometrics and you don’t appear, your application is treated as abandoned and denied, unless USCIS already received a rescheduling request or a change of address that explains why you didn’t show up.¹ Abandoned means the case is closed and your filing fee is gone.

Call the USCIS Contact Center right away. You’ll need to explain the reason, and the agency will decide whether it qualifies as good cause. A late-arriving notice or a genuine emergency may work in your favor; forgetting or being too busy generally won’t. The consequences are real: denial of the underlying petition, loss of the filing fee, and the possibility of starting the whole process over.⁴

After the Appointment

Your prints go electronically to the FBI for a full criminal background check.⁸ USCIS uses the same data to verify your identity and produce your immigration documents.²

The photograph taken at the ASC can be reused for some future filings if it’s no more than three years old when you file. USCIS does not allow photo reuse for green card applications (Form I-485), naturalization applications (Form N-400), green card renewals (Form I-90), or citizenship certificate requests (Form N-600). Those always require a fresh biometrics appointment.⁵

Finishing biometrics doesn’t mean a decision is around the corner. It’s one step in a longer process that also includes background check results, document review, and sometimes an interview. To see where your case stands, use the USCIS Case Status Online tool at egov.uscis.gov and enter the 13-character receipt number from your Form I-797C.⁹
