The Amy Bradley disappearance refers to the still-unsolved 1998 vanishing of 23-year-old Amy Lynn Bradley from the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Rhapsody of the Seas as it sailed between Aruba and Curaçao. More than 28 years later, no body has been found, no one has been charged, and the FBI continues to treat the case as an active kidnapping and missing-persons investigation with a reward of up to $100,000. A 2025 Netflix documentary generated hundreds of new tips, three of which have been described as significant.1FBI. Amy Lynn Bradley
What Happened Aboard the Rhapsody of the Seas
Amy Bradley, from Chesterfield, Virginia, was on a family cruise with her parents Ron and Iva and her brother Brad. On the evening of March 23, 1998, she spent time at the ship’s nightclub with her brother and members of the house band, Blue Orchid. A cruise videographer captured footage of her dancing with the band’s bass player, Alister “Yellow” Douglas.2People. Inside Amy Lynn Bradley’s Missing Persons Case Douglas later told investigators that around 1:00 a.m. the two parted ways, with him heading to a staff elevator and Amy walking in the opposite direction.3Oxygen. Brad returned to the family suite at about 3:35 a.m. Amy followed roughly five minutes later. The siblings sat together on the cabin balcony before Brad went inside to sleep. Amy stayed on the balcony in a lounge chair.2People. Inside Amy Lynn Bradley’s Missing Persons Case
Sometime between 5:15 and 5:30 a.m., Ron Bradley saw his daughter asleep on the balcony. When he checked again at 6:00 a.m., she was gone. The balcony door was open roughly 14 to 16 inches. Her shoes were still there. Her cigarettes and lighter were not.3Oxygen. Cruise Ship Disappearance of Amy Bradley Explained
How the Ship and Authorities Responded
Ron Bradley searched the ship for over an hour before waking his wife. The family asked that the ship’s gangway not be lowered when it arrived in Curaçao, hoping to keep passengers and crew aboard, but the captain proceeded with disembarkation. He initially declined to seal the ship or make a public announcement about Amy’s disappearance. By 5:00 p.m. on March 24, the captain told the Bradleys that an internal search had turned up nothing.2People. Inside Amy Lynn Bradley’s Missing Persons Case
The family stayed behind in Curaçao. On March 26, the FBI conducted an extensive search of the Rhapsody of the Seas when it docked in St. Thomas, using dogs on the vessel. The Netherlands Antilles Coast Guard carried out a four-day search of surrounding waters, and Royal Caribbean later chartered a private boat for an additional sweep after the ship returned to Puerto Rico. Nothing was found.2People. Inside Amy Lynn Bradley’s Missing Persons Case3Oxygen. Cruise Ship Disappearance of Amy Bradley Explained

Who Investigators Looked At
Alister Douglas, the bass player seen dancing with Amy the night she vanished, was the earliest focus. Cruise employees woke him in his cabin around 6:00 a.m. to search his room and question him about Bradley.3Oxygen. Cruise Ship Disappearance of Amy Bradley Explained The FBI questioned him soon after. He voluntarily took a polygraph, which was inconclusive. Investigators found no evidence to charge him, and he was released. Douglas has maintained his innocence.4Netflix Tudum. Amy Bradley Is Missing Release Date, Trailer, and News
Brad Bradley alleged that the bass player had danced too close to Amy earlier that evening and that she had told him to back off. A separate unnamed witness said they saw Amy with a band member around 6:00 a.m. that morning walking to the deck above; roughly ten minutes later, according to the witness, the band member returned alone.3Oxygen. Iva Bradley reported that on the evening before Amy vanished, a waiter she described as “creepy” had asked for Amy by name and expressed interest in taking her to a bar on land. Authorities investigated two unidentified men who may have had information and released composite sketches of both. No arrests have ever been made.3Oxygen. Reported Sightings and the “Jas” Photos
Several people have come forward over the years claiming they encountered Amy alive in the Caribbean. None of the reports reached authorities quickly enough to act on in real time.
Curaçao Beach, August 1998
Canadian tourist David Carmichael reported seeing a woman on a Curaçao beach who matched Amy’s description, including her distinctive tattoos: a Tasmanian Devil spinning a basketball on her shoulder, a sun on her lower back, a Chinese symbol on her right ankle, and a gecko around her pierced navel. Carmichael said the woman was flanked by two men and appeared frightened, and that one of the men resembled Alister Douglas. Before he could speak to her, one of the men stared him down and motioned her away. A later search of the area found nothing.6People. Was Amy Bradley Ever Found3Oxygen. Curaçao Brothel, January 1999
Navy petty officer Bill Hefner said he encountered a woman at a brothel in Curaçao who identified herself as Amy. According to Hefner, the woman told him she had gone ashore with her brother to buy drugs and was now “stuck” with the men holding her. Two men then removed her from the establishment. Hefner did not report the encounter at the time because he was unaware Bradley was missing; he only recognized her face later in a magazine.6People. Was Amy Bradley Ever Found
The “Jas” Photos, 2005
In 2005, an anonymous tipster sent the Bradley family a link to a Caribbean-based website featuring sex workers. One woman pictured was identified by the name “Jas.” The FBI conducted a forensic analysis and concluded that the woman in the photographs resembled Amy Bradley.6People. The “Jas” photos remain one of the most discussed pieces of evidence in the case and are central to the theory that Bradley was trafficked into the sex trade.
Barbados Restroom, 2005
Also in 2005, a tourist named Judy Maurer reported an incident in a restroom in Barbados. Maurer said she heard men enter and confront a woman, telling her a “deal was imminent” and that she “better be on time.” After they left, Maurer stepped out of her stall and asked the woman her name. The woman said her name was Amy. Maurer did not report the encounter for some time afterward.7Time. Amy Bradley Is Missing Netflix
Competing Theories
Three explanations have circulated for years. None has been proven or definitively ruled out.
The Bradley family has long believed Amy was taken from the ship against her will and forced into prostitution. The Curaçao and Barbados sightings, the “Jas” photos, and a pattern of IP addresses accessing Bradley’s missing-persons website from the Caribbean on holidays and anniversaries form the circumstantial backbone of this theory.8Hollywood Reporter. A second theory holds that Bradley fell or jumped from the balcony. The cruise director working on the ship at the time maintained this view. Investigative journalist James Renner, who is writing a book titled A Cruise to Nowhere, has argued that Bradley may have gone over the balcony railing rather than through the cabin door. Renner pointed to palm prints found on the railing and footprints on the balcony’s glass door as evidence she was sitting with her feet against the glass. He proposed she may have been influenced by the “call of the void” phenomenon after a night of drinking and noted she was navigating a difficult period in her personal life. Renner has dismissed the Caribbean sightings as unreliable.9AOL. Journalist Reveals Overlooked Detail
A third possibility, raised by the Netflix docuseries, is that Amy left the ship of her own volition. The filmmakers said this theory had not been widely discussed before. Little concrete evidence supports it.10Netflix Tudum. Amy Bradley Is Missing Case Theories Updates
The Netflix Documentary and New Leads
The three-part docuseries Amy Bradley Is Missing, directed by Ari Mark and Phil Lott, premiered on Netflix on July 16, 2025. It featured first-time interviews with Lori Thompson, who said she saw Amy with Alister Douglas earlier on the night she disappeared, and Amica Douglas, Alister’s daughter, who expressed skepticism about her father’s innocence. Amica described finding a bag of photographs of unknown white women in her father’s possession after the cruise and said he became emotionally distant after returning from the voyage. In a phone call filmed for the documentary, she confronted her father about rumors that he was seen with Amy on a beach in Curaçao. He denied it, saying he dislikes beaches.7Time. Hundreds of new leads have reached authorities and the family since the release, and reporting by the Hollywood Reporter and People described three as “very significant”:8Hollywood Reporter. Amy Bradley Alive New Evidence FBI Investigation11People. Amy Bradley Disappearance Three New Significant Leads
- A woman who worked as a bar server on the Rhapsody of the Seas in 1998 came forward after watching the documentary. She reported that on the night Amy disappeared, she heard someone exclaim “Señorita kidnapped!” to passengers and crew, and that a bartender told her to be quiet and moved her to the back of the bar. She reportedly does not speak much English. Iva Bradley told People that as of late 2025 the woman had not yet been located or formally interviewed.
- A “highly suspicious” hit to Amy’s missing-persons website was traced through geolocation to a device on a boat off the western end of Barbados. A separate potential sighting in the Caribbean prompted an FBI witness interview.
- New, undisclosed information led investigators to believe Amy may have had at least one child, which proponents of the trafficking theory cite as the strongest indication she survived.
A source told the Hollywood Reporter that the FBI assigned a new agent to the case after the documentary’s release. The Bradley family also hired private investigators who traveled to Curaçao and surrounding countries to pursue leads.8Hollywood Reporter. Amy Bradley Alive New Evidence FBI Investigation
Where the Case Stands Now
The FBI still classifies Amy Lynn Bradley’s disappearance as an active kidnapping and missing-persons case, handled by the Washington, D.C. field office. The bureau has released age-progressed photographs depicting what she might look like at age 42 and maintains a reward of up to $100,000 for information leading to her recovery or the identification and conviction of anyone responsible.1FBI. Progress has been slowed by the international dimensions of the case. The FBI’s authority to investigate crimes aboard cruise ships depends on factors including the vessel’s location, the nationality of the victim, vessel ownership, and where the ship is flagged.12FBI. Crimes Onboard Cruise Ships Because most cruise lines register their ships in foreign countries, the laws of the flag state may govern events on board, and pursuing leads in Caribbean nations outside U.S. jurisdiction has been a persistent obstacle. Digital leads have hit the same wall: IP addresses that repeatedly access Amy’s missing-persons website from Curaçao and Barbados originate from non-U.S. carriers the bureau has been unable to trace.7Time. No body has ever been recovered. No one has been charged. The family continues to appeal for anyone with information to come forward, and anyone with a tip can contact the FBI directly.
