AmeriCorps Loan Forgiveness: Award, Eligible Loans, and Taxes

AmeriCorps doesn’t forgive student loans the way some public-service programs do. Instead, completing a term of service earns you the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award, a fixed sum the National Service Trust pays directly to your loan servicer or school. A full-time award for terms approved in the 2025–26 or 2026–27 award years is worth $7,395, matching the maximum Federal Pell Grant.1Federal Student Aid Knowledge Center. 2026-27 Federal Pell Grant Maximum and Minimum Award Amounts Service time can also count toward Public Service Loan Forgiveness, which for federal borrowers is often the larger prize.

What the Education Award Is Worth

A full-time award equals the maximum Pell Grant for the award year in which AmeriCorps approved your service term. For 2025–26 and 2026–27 approvals, that’s $7,395. If you served in an earlier year when Pell was lower, your award reflects the smaller figure.

Part-time service earns a scaled award. Three-quarter-time service (1,200+ hours) earns 70% of the full amount, half-time (900+ hours) earns 50%, and shorter positions scale down from there.2eCFR. 45 CFR 2525.100 – What Is the Amount of an Education Award? Over your lifetime, you can earn up to the aggregate value of two full-time awards, so multiple part-time terms can add up until you hit that cap.3AmeriCorps. The Trust never pays you directly. Every dollar goes to a school or a loan holder on your behalf.

Which Loans the Award Can Pay Off

Federal law defines a “qualified student loan” broadly, and three categories are eligible:4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 42 USC 12604 – Post-Service Benefits

  • Title IV loans, which cover most common federal student loans: Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized, Direct Consolidation, and the older Stafford and Perkins programs.
  • Public Health Service Act loans made under Title VII or Title VIII for health professions education.
  • Institutionally certified loans that your school determined were necessary to cover educational expenses, as long as the loan was made or guaranteed by an eligible lender, a state agency, or a lender approved by AmeriCorps.

Parent PLUS Loans are excluded by statute. Typical private student loans from banks or credit unions generally don’t qualify unless they fit the narrow institutionally-certified category above. Credit card balances and other consumer debt are ineligible even if you used the money for school.5AmeriCorps. Is My Loan a Qualified Loan?

Defaulted loans can still be paid with the award, as long as the underlying loan is a qualified student loan. You don’t need to rehabilitate or consolidate first. That makes the award one of the few tools that works while federal loans are in bad standing.

How to Request a Payment

All transactions run through the My AmeriCorps portal. Log in, start a new Education Award Payment Request, enter the dollar amount, and search the pre-registered list for your loan servicer or school.6AmeriCorps. How to Request Your Segal AmeriCorps Education Award Payment You don’t have to spend the whole balance at once; partial payments are fine, and you can keep drawing on it until the balance is gone or the seven-year clock runs out. The institution certifies the request and the Trust pays them directly.

One catch the portal doesn’t warn you about: some servicers apply lump-sum payments to future scheduled payments rather than knocking down principal. If you want the money to reduce principal, call your servicer after the disbursement posts and ask for it to be reapplied.

Combining AmeriCorps With Public Service Loan Forgiveness

For federal borrowers, this is where the real loan forgiveness lives. AmeriCorps service counts as qualifying employment for PSLF, so every month you serve can count toward the 120 qualifying payments PSLF requires. The paperwork has to be right.7Federal Student Aid. Public Service Loan Forgiveness FAQs

During service, request an Economic Hardship Deferment on your Direct Loans rather than a standard forbearance. Months in Economic Hardship Deferment during AmeriCorps or Peace Corps service count as qualifying PSLF payments; a standard forbearance pauses your loans without earning credit.

After service, you can send your education award to your Direct Loans as a lump sum and receive credit for multiple PSLF payments at once, up to 12. The count is your lump-sum payment divided by your scheduled monthly amount under an income-driven repayment plan. If your IDR payment is $200 and you apply a $2,400 award payment, that counts as 12 qualifying payments. For borrowers on the PSLF track, this is usually the highest-leverage way to spend the award.

Interest AmeriCorps Pays on Loans in Forbearance

This benefit is separate from the education award and easy to miss. If you placed qualified student loans into forbearance during your service term, AmeriCorps will pay the interest that accrued on those loans during service. The payment comes from the National Service Trust and does not reduce your education award balance.8eCFR. 45 CFR 2525.330 – What Steps Are Necessary for AmeriCorps to Pay Interest That Has Accrued on a Qualified Student Loan in Forbearance?

Three things have to line up: you obtained forbearance on a qualified student loan during service, your program verified you successfully completed your term, and your loan holder verified the accrued interest. Then you file an Interest Accrual Request through the My AmeriCorps portal.9My AmeriCorps. How to Request Your Interest Accrual Benefit Note that if you’re pursuing PSLF, the deferment strategy above may be a better fit than forbearance plus interest reimbursement.

The VISTA Stipend Choice

AmeriCorps VISTA members face a choice before service begins: take the Segal Education Award or an end-of-service cash stipend. The stipend accrues at $4.94 per day, roughly $1,803 over a full year.10AmeriCorps. AmeriCorps VISTA Member Handbook 2025 The full-time education award is worth $7,395, more than four times as much.

You can switch from the education award to the stipend any time before your tenth month of service. You cannot switch the other direction. Once you lock in the stipend, the education award is gone. If you have qualifying loans and plan to finish your term, the award is almost always the better financial choice.

Taxes on the Award

The IRS treats every dollar disbursed from your education award as taxable income in the year it’s paid, whether the money goes to a school or to a loan holder.11Internal Revenue Service. 1099 MISC, Independent Contractors, and Self-Employed Interest accrual payments are taxable too.12AmeriCorps. 1099 IRS Tax Form Overview Nothing is withheld, so the bill lands at tax time.

If your combined award and interest accrual payments hit $600 or more in a calendar year, the Trust sends a Form 1099-MISC with the total in Box 3 (Other Income). You report it on Schedule 1 (Form 1040), line 8i. Under $600, no 1099 comes, but you still owe the tax.

Practically: spending a full $7,395 award in one calendar year at a combined 22% marginal rate adds roughly $1,600 to your tax bill. Splitting the award across two calendar years can sometimes help, depending on your other income. Setting aside part of your living allowance during service takes the sting out later.

The Seven-Year Deadline

You have seven years from the end of your service term to use the award. Anything left after that is forfeited. Two kinds of extensions exist:13eCFR. 45 CFR 2525.42 – Under What Circumstances Will AmeriCorps Grant an Extension?

  • Completing another term of national service (including Peace Corps) within the original seven-year window automatically extends your deadline by the length of that additional term.
  • AmeriCorps may grant a discretionary extension of up to one year if you were unavoidably prevented from using the award. Serious illness or injury, the death or disability of an immediate family member near the end of the use period, natural disasters, and overseas active military duty can qualify. Reserve or National Guard membership without an active-duty call-up generally does not.

AmeriCorps typically grants only one discretionary extension, with exceptions for situations known to last longer than 12 months such as extended military deployment.

Transferring the Award to a Family Member

If you were 55 or older when you began your service term, you can transfer your education award to a child, grandchild, or foster child, who can use it for the same purposes and within the same seven-year window. Members under 55 cannot transfer the award; it must be used by the person who earned it.3AmeriCorps. Segal AmeriCorps Education Award Overview

Program Status

The FY 2026 federal budget proposes eliminating AmeriCorps as an agency, with $107.7 million allocated to wind down operations rather than fund new service positions.14AmeriCorps. FY 2026 AmeriCorps Congressional Budget Justification Whether Congress adopts that proposal is not yet settled, and legal challenges are ongoing. Awards already in the National Service Trust are held in trust and should remain available for use within your seven-year window regardless of what happens to the agency. If you’re currently serving or weighing a term, watch the program’s status closely.
