America the Beautiful Senior Pass: Eligibility, Cost, and How to Buy

The America the Beautiful Senior Pass is a federal recreation pass for U.S. citizens and permanent residents aged 62 and older. It costs $80 for a lifetime version or $20 for an annual version, and it covers entrance and standard day-use fees at more than 2,000 federal sites, including national parks, wildlife refuges, and national forests.¹ It also gives you a 50 percent discount on some camping and other expanded amenity fees.

Who Qualifies

Two conditions, and that’s it. You have to be at least 62 on the day you buy the pass, and you have to be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.¹ There is no income test and no other qualifying condition.

Bring photo ID that shows both your date of birth and your citizenship or residency: a U.S. driver’s license, a U.S. passport or passport card, a state-issued ID, or a permanent resident card all work.² Sign the back of the pass as soon as you receive it. Rangers can ask to see the pass and your photo ID together, and the names must match.³

Lifetime or Annual

The lifetime version is $80 and never expires. The annual is $20 and runs from the date of purchase through the end of that same month a year later, so a pass bought March 15 stays valid through March 31 of the following year.⁴ Both versions carry the same entry benefits and the same expanded amenity discount.

If you start with the annual and later want to go lifetime, you can upgrade in person at any federal site that sells passes. Each annual pass you turn in knocks $20 off the $80 lifetime price, and this works even if the annual has already expired. One annual pass makes the upgrade $60, two makes it $40, three makes it $20, and four gets you the lifetime pass for free.¹ Keep your old annual cards.

How to Buy It

Four ways, and the price you pay depends on which you pick.

In Person

Buying at a federal recreation site is the cheapest route. You pay face value ($80 or $20) with no extra fees and walk out with the card the same day. More than 1,000 sites sell passes.⁵ Bring your photo ID.

Digital Pass on Recreation.gov

If you need a pass before your trip and don’t want to wait for mail, buy a digital pass on Recreation.gov. It costs the same as in person ($80 or $20) and downloads to your phone right away.⁴ You can show it on your screen at the gate. Adding a mailed physical card costs an extra $7.50. Digital passes cannot be purchased as gifts.

Online at the USGS Store

Ordering a physical card through the USGS online store adds a $5 processing fee and a $7.50 handling fee, so a lifetime pass runs $92.50 and an annual runs $32.50. You upload a photo of your ID during checkout. Delivery usually takes a few weeks and varies by season.¹ Your order receipt will not get you into a park while you wait, so if you have a trip coming up, buy the digital pass instead.⁶

By Mail

You can download the application from the USGS Store, mail it in with a photocopy of your ID and a $7.50 handling fee added to the pass price. Mail orders skip the $5 processing fee that online orders carry.¹

What the Pass Gets You at the Gate

The pass covers entrance fees and standard day-use fees at sites managed by any of the six federal land management agencies.⁷ How many people ride in on it depends on how the site charges.

At per-vehicle sites, the pass covers the pass holder and everyone in one non-commercial vehicle, or up to two motorcycles. At per-person sites, it covers the pass holder plus three additional adults, for four adults total, and children under 16 enter free regardless.⁴ A couple driving into a per-vehicle national park needs only one Senior Pass between them.

The Camping Discount

The pass gives you 50 percent off some expanded amenity fees. Those are the charges beyond basic entry: developed campgrounds, boat launches, swimming areas, and similar services. The discount applies only at sites run directly by a federal agency, and each of the six agencies handles the discount a little differently, so not every expanded amenity fee qualifies.⁴ Ask the specific site when you make a reservation. The discount does not stack with other promotions or passes.

What the Pass Does Not Cover

The Senior Pass is not an all-access ticket, and assuming otherwise leads to surprises at the entrance booth or the campground desk. It does not cover:

Fees charged by private concessionaires operating inside federal lands. Many campgrounds, parking lots, guided tours, and food services are run by private companies under contract, and they set their own prices. Parking at Mount Rushmore and the guided cave tours at Wind Cave National Park are common examples.
Commercial vehicles. The per-vehicle benefit only applies to non-commercial vehicles, so arriving on a commercial tour bus is not covered.
Special recreation permits, such as those for commercial filming, large group events, or certain backcountry uses.

Whether a campground is agency-operated or concessionaire-operated is not always obvious from the name. Confirm before you book.³

Lost, Damaged, or Passed On

The pass is non-transferable. It belongs to the person who signed the back, and it cannot be handed off to a spouse, family member, or anyone else. If the pass holder dies, a surviving spouse who qualifies has to buy their own.³

If your card is physically damaged, you can get a free replacement at a federal recreation site as long as part of the original is still identifiable and you have your photo ID. A lost or stolen pass, though, cannot be replaced. You buy a new one at full price.³ Treat the card the way you’d treat a credit card. Photographing the front and back gives you a record of the pass number, though the photo itself won’t get you into a park.

Other Passes in the Series

If someone in your group doesn’t qualify for the Senior Pass, another America the Beautiful pass may fit. The Military Pass is a free annual pass for current U.S. military members and their dependents, including Reserve and National Guard. The Access Pass is a free lifetime pass for U.S. citizens or permanent residents with a permanent disability, and it carries the same 50 percent discount on some expanded amenity fees. The standard Annual Pass is $80 for anyone, regardless of age or residency, and covers entrance and standard amenity fees but not the expanded amenity discount.

Most park visits only need one pass per vehicle, so before buying multiple passes, check which single pass already covers the most people in your group.⁸
