An “Amazon Luxembourg” charge on your bank or credit card statement is a legitimate Amazon transaction processed through one of the company’s Luxembourg-based European entities, which serve as Amazon’s European headquarters. It usually shows up under a descriptor like AMAZON EU SARL, AMAZON MEDIA EU SARL, or AMAZON PRIME with a Luxembourg (LU) country code, and it almost always corresponds to a purchase from a European Amazon store, a Prime membership renewal, a digital subscription, or an Amazon Pay transaction on a third-party site. If you don’t recognize it, the charge can usually be traced to a forgotten order, an auto-renewing subscription, a pending authorization, or a purchase made by someone else with access to your card.
Why the Charge Says Luxembourg
Amazon has operated out of Luxembourg since 2003, and the country is the legal base for its European business. Amazon EU Sarl is the seller of record for retail sales on European Amazon websites. Amazon Media EU Sarl handles digital content such as Kindle books, MP3s, and streaming purchases. Amazon Services Europe Sarl runs the third-party seller marketplace.1UK Parliament. Public Accounts Committee Written Evidence Because these are the entities charging your card, their name and Luxembourg location appear on the statement line.
Matching the Descriptor to a Purchase
Amazon publishes a reference list of billing descriptors so customers can identify what a given charge is for.2Amazon. Identify an Unknown Charge The descriptors you’re most likely to see with a Luxembourg tag:
- AMZ*Prime Shipping Club or AMAZON PRIME*[alphanumeric] is a Prime membership renewal, monthly or annual.
- Amazon Digital Svcs covers digital purchases like Kindle books, apps, MP3s, or video downloads.
- Amazon.com or AMZN.COM/BILL is a standard retail purchase.
- Amazon.com*PMT SVC or amzn pmts is an Amazon Pay transaction on a third-party website.
Prime pricing gives a quick sanity check on renewal charges. In the US, Prime is $14.99 per month or $139 per year, with discounted tiers for students and qualifying government-assistance recipients.3About Amazon. Prime Membership Cost and Benefits In the UK, full Prime is £8.99 per month or £95 per year, and standalone Prime Video is £5.99 per month.4Digital Spy. How To Trace the Charge in Your Amazon Account
Sign in and open the Transactions page under Your Payments. Match the amount and date on your statement to a specific order number. For digital content and streaming, check the Digital Orders page, which lists subscriptions such as Prime Video channels and Kindle Unlimited. For Prime itself, the Manage Your Prime Membership page shows the renewal date and the amount billed.2Amazon. Identify an Unknown Charge
A few reasons a charge can look wrong even when it isn’t:
- Authorization holds. When you place an order, Amazon asks the bank to verify the card. That appears as a pending charge but isn’t a real debit; if the order is cancelled before shipping, the hold can linger for several days, and some banks hold authorized funds for seven to ten business days before releasing them.5Amazon Pay. About Authorizations
- Split shipments. If a single order ships in multiple packages, Amazon charges the card separately as each part ships, so the statement shows several smaller amounts instead of one total.
- Free-trial conversions. A Prime or Prime Video trial that wasn’t cancelled converts to a paid subscription automatically. Prime Video add-on channels can renew on a different date than the main Prime membership and look like a duplicate.6Amazon. Unknown Charges for Prime Video
- Shared payment methods. A family member, roommate, or coworker with access to the card may have placed the order or triggered a subscription.
Canceling or Disputing the Charge
How you resolve the charge depends on how it was processed.
For standard Amazon purchases and subscriptions, the fastest path is to contact Amazon Customer Service with the charge date, amount, and the email on the account. You can cancel a Prime membership, a Prime Video subscription, or a Prime Video add-on channel directly from the account management pages, and Amazon provides links to cancel accidental purchases.6Amazon. For an Amazon Pay charge (a purchase you made on a third-party merchant’s site), open the Amazon Pay Activity page, click Details and Support on the order, and choose “Request return, refund, or cancellation” to contact the merchant first. If the merchant doesn’t resolve it, you can file an A-to-z Guarantee claim from the same page. Amazon’s investigations team reviews these claims, and the process can take up to 45 business days.7Amazon Pay. Resolve a Problem With a Transaction
If the charge is truly unauthorized and you cannot find it anywhere in your Amazon or Amazon Pay account, contact your bank or card issuer right away to block the card and file a chargeback. Change your Amazon password, turn on two-step verification, and notify Amazon Pay buyer support so they can help prevent further misuse.8Amazon Pay. Unauthorized Transactions
Deadlines matter for disputes involving an Amazon Payments account balance or a linked bank account rather than a credit card. Reporting compromised credentials within two business days limits your liability to $50. Waiting longer can increase liability to $500 if Amazon can show it could have stopped the loss with earlier notice. All unauthorized transactions must be reported within 60 calendar days of the statement date.9Amazon Pay. Amazon Payments Unauthorized Transaction Policy
Watch Out for Fake “Amazon Charge” Alerts
Scammers routinely impersonate Amazon through calls, texts, and emails warning about a “suspicious charge.” The FTC has documented schemes where fraudsters spoof Amazon’s phone number, claim a fraudulent purchase was detected, and pressure the target into handing over personal information or transferring money to “protect” the account.10Federal Trade Commission. Did You Get a Call or Text About a Suspicious Purchase on Amazon Amazon has also flagged fake subscription-charge alerts circulating in Spain, Italy, and Germany that use phishing links to harvest login and payment details.11About Amazon. The reliable check: real Amazon messages about your orders or account always appear in the Message Center under Your Account on the Amazon site or app. If a message isn’t there, it didn’t come from Amazon. Amazon will never ask for passwords, one-time verification codes, or payment details by phone or email. Legitimate Amazon Pay sites are hosted only on domains such as pay.amazon.com, pay.amazon.co.uk, and eu.account.amazon.com.12Amazon Pay EU.
