Amazon Corp SYF Payment on Bank Statement: Verify or Dispute

An “AMAZON CORP SYF” payment on your bank statement is money pulled from your checking or savings account by Synchrony Bank to pay down a balance on an Amazon-branded credit card. It is not a new purchase from Amazon. The charge appears whenever you make a one-time payment or a scheduled autopay on an Amazon Store Card or Amazon Secured Card, both of which Synchrony issues.

Why Synchrony Shows Up as “SYF”

Synchrony Bank runs the store-card programs for a long list of retailers, Amazon included. “SYF” is short for Synchrony Financial, the parent company. When you pay your Amazon credit card bill, Synchrony initiates the electronic withdrawal from your linked bank account, and your bank logs the merchant as Synchrony rather than Amazon. That is how the descriptor ends up reading “AMAZON CORP SYF” instead of a plain Amazon entry.

Two Amazon cards can trigger this charge. The Amazon Store Card is a closed-loop card that works on Amazon and eligible affiliated brands, with a variable APR of 29.49% as of January 2026.1Amazon. Amazon Store Card The Amazon Secured Card is aimed at people building credit; you put down a deposit between $100 and $1,000, and it carries a fixed 10% APR.2Amazon. Amazon Secured Card

One boundary worth flagging: the Amazon Prime Visa is issued by JPMorgan Chase, not Synchrony. Payments on that card do not create an “AMAZON CORP SYF” line. If you see the SYF descriptor, you are looking at a Store Card or Secured Card payment.

What the Withdrawal Actually Includes

The dollar amount taken from your bank is a single lump, but it can cover more than just your minimum payment. Depending on your account activity, the same withdrawal may include interest on any revolving balance at the card’s APR, a late fee if you missed the due date, and installments on any promotional financing plans you set up at checkout.

Late fees on the Store Card are $29 if you paid on time over the previous six billing cycles, or $40 if you missed a payment in that window. The Secured Card’s late fee is capped at $5.3Synchrony Bank. Amazon Store Card Account Agreement and Pricing Addendum2Amazon. Amazon Secured Card

Promotional financing is the most common reason a withdrawal is larger than expected. If you chose an equal monthly payment plan at Amazon checkout, your autopay has to cover those installments on top of any other balance you carry.4Amazon. Amazon Store Card and Amazon Secured Card Promotional Financing Multiple promotional balances running at once can push the total well above what you would guess from your recent spending. Your bank statement will not break any of this down. For the itemized version, you need your Synchrony statement.

How to Verify the Charge

Log in at synchrony.com/amazon and pull up your transaction history.5Synchrony. Manage your Prime or Amazon cards Match the date and dollar amount on your bank statement against the payment Synchrony recorded. If they match, the charge is legitimate and the money went where it was supposed to.

If you cannot get into your online account, call the number on the back of your card. Synchrony’s fraud line is 1-866-412-7866 if you already suspect the charge is unauthorized.6Synchrony. Fraud Protection

Changing or Stopping the Automatic Payment

To adjust the withdrawal amount, change your linked bank account, or turn autopay off, sign in to Synchrony Account Manager and open “Manage autopay.”7Synchrony. Synchrony Autopay – How to Set Up and FAQs Changes generally take effect before the next billing cycle. If your due date is a day or two out, this month’s payment may still process on the old settings.

Turning off autopay does not cancel the card or wipe out your balance. You still owe what you owe, and you will need to pay manually each month to avoid late fees and credit damage. Closing the account is a separate request through customer service.

Disputing a Charge You Don’t Recognize

If the amount pulled from your bank does not match anything in your Synchrony account, or if you never authorized the payment, the Fair Credit Billing Act gives you the right to have Synchrony investigate.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1666 – Correction of Billing Errors

The deadline is strict. You have 60 days from the statement that first showed the disputed charge to send Synchrony a written billing error notice.9Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1026.13 – Billing Error Resolution After they receive it, they have 30 days to acknowledge the dispute in writing and up to two billing cycles (no more than 90 days) to complete their investigation.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1666 – Correction of Billing Errors While the dispute is open, Synchrony cannot report the amount as delinquent or try to collect on it.

Calling the fraud line is a good first step, but follow up with a written dispute. The 60-day window is where most people lose their protections, so do not put it off.

If You Never Opened an Amazon Credit Card

An “AMAZON CORP SYF” withdrawal on the statement of someone who has never applied for a Synchrony-issued Amazon card is a warning sign of identity theft. Someone may have opened the account in your name and linked your bank for payments. Take these steps quickly:

  • Call Synchrony’s fraud department at 1-866-412-7866 and report that the account is not yours.6Synchrony. Fraud Protection
  • File an identity theft report with the FTC at IdentityTheft.gov or 1-877-438-4338.10USAGov. Identity Theft
  • Place a fraud alert with one of the three credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion). The bureau you contact is required to notify the other two.
  • Call your own bank to flag the unauthorized withdrawal and decide whether to close or change the compromised account.

Pull your free credit reports while you are at it and look for any other accounts you do not recognize. An FTC identity theft report also gives you the right to have fraudulent accounts blocked from your credit file.
