Amazon.com MR Charge: Source, Cancellation, and Refunds

An “Amazon.com*MR” charge on your bank or credit card statement is almost always a recurring monthly subscription renewal from Amazon, typically Prime, Kindle Unlimited, Audible, Amazon Music Unlimited, Amazon Luna, or a Prime Video Channel add-on. The “MR” tag doesn’t appear on Amazon’s official list of charge descriptors, but it consistently shows up alongside monthly subscription billing rather than one-time product orders. If you don’t remember signing up for anything, the likely explanation is a free trial that converted to a paid subscription on its own.

What the MR Descriptor Signals

Amazon uses different text on bank statements depending on the transaction type. Product purchases usually show as “Amazon.com,” “AMZN Mktp US,” or “AMAZON MKTPLACE PMTS.” Prime membership fees appear as “AMZ*Prime” or “AMAZON PRIME*” with a reference code. Digital content like Kindle books and video purchases show as “Amazon Digital Svcs amzn.com/bill.”1Amazon. Identify an Amazon Charge

The MR variant sits outside those labels. Across consumer statements it functions as a marker for monthly recurring subscription billing. So if you see it, start with your active subscriptions rather than your recent orders.

Which Subscriptions Trigger It

Several Amazon services bill monthly and can produce this charge. Match the dollar amount on your statement against these prices:

  • Amazon Prime: $14.99 per month, or $139 per year if you chose annual billing.2Amazon. Amazon Prime Terms and Conditions
  • Kindle Unlimited: $11.99 per month.3Amazon. Kindle Unlimited Price FAQs
  • Amazon Music Unlimited: $12.99 per month for non-Prime members, or $11.99 per month for Prime members.4Amazon. Amazon Music Unlimited
  • Audible: from $7.95 per month for Audible Plus up to $14.95 per month for Premium Plus with monthly credits.
  • Prime Video Channels: add-on subscriptions like Paramount+ or Max, each billed separately at its own monthly rate.
  • Amazon Luna: $9.99 per month for cloud gaming.

In states that tax digital subscriptions, sales tax gets added on top, which can push the statement charge a few cents to a dollar above the advertised price. That small gap is what trips people up when they try to match a charge to a known subscription.

All of these auto-renew by default. Amazon’s terms make this explicit: unless you cancel before the next billing date, the subscription continues and your stored card gets charged.5Amazon. How to Find the Exact Source in Your Account

Two places in your Amazon account will confirm what generated the charge.

Go to Your Orders and filter by “Digital Orders.” Each entry shows the date, amount charged (including tax), payment card used, and billing address. Match the date and dollar amount against the statement line.

For a broader view, open Your Memberships and Subscriptions. That page lists every recurring service tied to your account, the renewal date, the price, and the payment method.6Amazon. Manage Amazon Subscriptions Prime Video Channel add-ons have a separate management page where each channel is listed individually.7Amazon. Cancel Your Prime Video Add-On Subscription

If nothing in your account matches, check whether a family or household member has access to your payment methods. Shared accounts and Amazon Household are a common explanation for charges that look unfamiliar but are legitimate.

How to Cancel the Subscription

Once you’ve identified the service, canceling takes four steps:

  • Open Your Memberships and Subscriptions.
  • Find the subscription.
  • Select Manage Subscription.
  • Select Cancel Subscription under Advanced Controls.

You keep access through the end of the current billing period you’ve already paid for.6Amazon. Manage Amazon Subscriptions

Prime Video Channel add-ons go through Prime Video subscription settings instead: find the channel and select Unsubscribe. Amazon sometimes offers an immediate self-service refund; otherwise access runs to the end of the cycle.7Amazon. Cancel Your Prime Video Add-On Subscription

One catch: if you subscribed through Apple’s App Store or another third-party platform, Amazon can’t cancel it or refund it. You manage it through that platform. Getting a Refund After the Charge Posts

Whether you can recover the money depends on the service and how fast you act.

Amazon Prime gives a full refund if you cancel within three business days of signing up or converting from a free trial, though Amazon may deduct the value of any Prime benefits used in that window. After three days, a full refund is still available if you haven’t used any benefit since the charge posted. Once you’ve used free shipping, Prime Video, or another benefit, the fee becomes non-refundable.2Amazon. Amazon Prime Terms and Conditions

Kindle Unlimited fees are non-refundable after payment. Canceling keeps your access through the current billing period but returns no prorated credit.9Amazon. Kindle Unlimited Terms of Use

Audible credits expire the moment you cancel and have no cash value. If you plan to cancel, use or gift any remaining credits first.

For any subscription, contacting Amazon customer service through the Help portal (live chat or callback) before canceling gives you the best chance at a courtesy refund, especially for an accidental renewal. Amazon doesn’t publish a guaranteed processing timeline; speed depends on your payment method and bank.

Disputing an Unauthorized Charge

If the charge is genuinely unauthorized and no one in your household signed up for the service, federal law provides two levels of protection depending on the card type.

Debit Card

The Electronic Fund Transfer Act caps your liability at $50 if you notify your bank within two business days of discovering an unauthorized debit card transaction.10Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1005.6 – Liability of Consumer for Unauthorized Transfers You have up to 60 days from the date the bank sent the statement to report the problem. After that 60-day window, you could be liable for the full amount of any unauthorized transfers that occur past the deadline.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 US Code 1693g – Consumer Liability

Credit Card

Credit cards carry stronger protection. Under the Truth in Lending Act, liability for unauthorized credit card charges caps at $50, and most issuers waive even that.12Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1643 – Liability of Holder of Credit Card The Fair Credit Billing Act gives you 60 days from the statement date to dispute a billing error, and your issuer must acknowledge the dispute and investigate before collecting the disputed amount.13Federal Trade Commission. Fair Credit Billing Act

Before going to your bank, try Amazon customer service first. Banks generally want to see that you attempted resolution with the merchant. Save chat transcripts or note the date, time, and name of any representative you speak with.

Why a Bank Chargeback Should Be Your Last Move

Filing a chargeback reverses the charge, but the consequences can cost more than the subscription. Amazon treats chargebacks seriously, and accounts flagged for payment reversals risk suspension or permanent closure. A closed Amazon account means losing access to your Kindle library, Audible purchases, digital game licenses, and anything else tied to it. The suspension can also extend to other accounts registered at the same physical address.

Contact Amazon first, request a refund directly, and escalate through Amazon’s own process. If Amazon refuses and the charge is truly unauthorized, then a chargeback is the right tool. Understand the trade-off before pulling that lever.
