Car sales tax in Alberta is just the 5% federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) when you buy from a dealership, and nothing at all when you buy privately from another individual. Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so nothing stacks on top of the GST at the till. A few federal taxes can still apply on expensive or fuel-inefficient vehicles, but for most buyers the math is simple: 5% at a dealer, zero from a private seller.
The 5% GST at Dealerships
Alberta is the only province with no provincial sales tax on consumer goods, so a licensed dealership charges you the federal GST alone.1Canada Revenue Agency. Charge and Collect the GST/HST On a $45,000 vehicle that comes to $2,250. The same car in Ontario would attract 13% HST ($5,850); in British Columbia it would be 5% GST plus 7% PST.
That gap is the whole reason Alberta buyers routinely come out ahead on the sticker-versus-drive-away comparison. No HST, no PST, no municipal add-on. Just the 5%.
Private Sales Pay No Tax
If you buy a vehicle from another individual in Alberta, you pay nothing in sales tax. GST doesn’t apply because a private seller isn’t a registered GST collector,2Canada Revenue Agency. GST/HST and Motor Vehicles and Alberta has no provincial tax to fill the gap. Whether the car is $5,000 or $30,000, the tax bill is zero.
In Ontario, by contrast, private buyers still owe provincial retail sales tax on a used vehicle. Alberta charges nothing.
Gifting a Vehicle to Family
Transferring a vehicle to an immediate family member is also tax-free in Alberta, for the same reasons a private sale is. You still need to visit a registry agent with proof of the relationship: birth certificates for parent-child transfers, a marriage licence for spouses, or adoption documents. The fair market value has to be recorded on the transfer paperwork even when no money changes hands, and the new owner needs valid Alberta insurance before plates will be issued.
How Trade-Ins and Discounts Affect the GST
When you trade in a vehicle at a dealership, GST is calculated on the net price after the trade-in credit, not the full sticker.3Department of Justice Canada. Excise Tax Act RSC 1985 c E-15 – Section 153 Buy a $40,000 car with a $15,000 trade-in and you pay 5% GST on the $25,000 difference, a saving of $750 versus buying with no trade.
Dealer discounts work the same way. Knock $3,000 off the asking price and GST applies to the reduced number, because that’s the actual selling price. Manufacturer rebates are different. A cash rebate paid by the manufacturer doesn’t reduce what you paid the dealer, so GST applies to the full pre-rebate price. The rebate arrives separately, but the tax has already been calculated on the higher amount. Budget accordingly.
Federal Luxury Tax Over $100,000
Since September 2022, Canada’s Select Luxury Items Tax Act adds a federal tax on new vehicles priced above $100,000. Alberta buyers are not exempt. The tax is the lesser of 10% of the full price or 20% of the amount over $100,000.4Department of Justice Canada. Select Luxury Items Tax Act
On a $120,000 vehicle, 10% of the full price is $12,000 and 20% of the $20,000 over the threshold is $4,000. The lower figure applies, so you owe $4,000. On a $250,000 vehicle the numbers swap: 10% of the full price is $25,000, while 20% of the $150,000 over the threshold is $30,000, so you pay $25,000. The luxury tax is calculated before GST, and GST is then charged on the higher total. Factory options and add-ons count toward the retail price, so a car that starts under $100,000 can cross the threshold once you spec it up.
Green Levy on Fuel-Inefficient Vehicles
The federal government also charges an excise tax on new passenger vehicles with poor fuel economy, sometimes called the green levy. It covers automobiles, station wagons, vans, and SUVs designed for passenger use. Pickup trucks are excluded, and so are vans that seat 10 or more.5Department of Justice Canada. Excise Tax Act RSC 1985 c E-15 – Schedule I
The rate is set by a weighted fuel consumption rating (55% city, 45% highway):
- 13 to under 14 L/100 km: $1,000
- 14 to under 15 L/100 km: $2,000
- 15 to under 16 L/100 km: $3,000
- 16 L/100 km or more: $4,000
Vehicles rated below 13 L/100 km owe nothing under the levy. A separate federal excise tax of $100 applies to any factory-installed air conditioning unit. Both charges are usually folded into the dealership’s price rather than shown as line items, but you’re paying them.
Business Purchases and GST Input Credits
Buying a vehicle through a business doesn’t change the 5% GST at the point of sale, but a GST-registered business can recover it through an input tax credit. On a $50,000 vehicle that’s $2,500 back through your regular GST filing.
The income tax side is more constrained. For 2026, the ceiling on the depreciable cost of a standard passenger vehicle is $39,000 before tax. Zero-emission passenger vehicles get a higher ceiling of $61,000 before tax.6Department of Finance Canada. Government Announces the 2026 Automobile Deduction Limits and Expense Benefit Rates for Businesses Buy a $60,000 gas-powered sedan for the business and only $39,000 of it can be depreciated. The wider write-off room on zero-emission vehicles is a real factor in fleet decisions.
