Air Force Physical Fitness Assessment: Scoring, Standards, and Testing

The Air Force Physical Fitness Readiness Assessment scores four components on a 100-point scale: a 2.0-mile run worth up to 50 points, a waist-to-height ratio measurement worth 20, and push-ups and a core exercise worth 15 each. A composite of 75.0 or higher passes, provided you also meet the minimum on every individual component. The current version took effect under DAFMAN 36-2905 with a diagnostic window from March 1 through June 30, 2026, and official scoring under the new standards beginning July 1, 2026.1United States Air Force. The Four Scored Components

Each component offers a choice of exercise, and you pick one option per category. Scoring tables differ across the options, so the sensible move is usually the exercise you perform best.2Department of the Air Force. DAFMAN 36-2905 – Air Force Physical Fitness Readiness Program

  • Cardiorespiratory fitness: a timed 2.0-mile run or the 20-meter High Aerobic Multi-shuttle Run (HAMR).
  • Body composition: waist-to-height ratio (WHtR).
  • Upper-body strength: one-minute standard push-ups or two-minute hand-release push-ups.
  • Core endurance: one-minute sit-ups, two-minute cross-leg reverse crunches, or a timed forearm plank.

How the 100 Points Break Down

The run (or HAMR) carries the heaviest weight at 50 points. WHtR earns up to 20. Push-ups and the core exercise each contribute up to 15.3Department of the Air Force. Air Force Physical Fitness Assessment Scoring Charts

Scoring charts are split by gender and by five-year age brackets running from under 25 through 60-plus. Minimums soften as brackets get older. One rule matters more than the arithmetic: miss the minimum on any single component and the whole assessment is unsatisfactory, regardless of your point total.2Department of the Air Force. Composite scores fall into three ratings:3Department of the Air Force. Air Force Physical Fitness Assessment Scoring Charts

  • Excellent: 90.0 or higher.
  • Satisfactory: 75.0 to 89.9.
  • Unsatisfactory: below 75.0, or any component minimum not met.

Waist-to-Height Ratio Standard

WHtR is your waist circumference divided by your height. A ratio under 0.49 earns the full 20 points; 0.60 or higher earns zero.4Air Force Personnel Center. Additional Guidance on Military Fitness Standards

If your WHtR is 0.55 or higher, you enter a 12-month informal, self-directed Body Composition Improvement Program. That first enrollment is not a failure and does not trigger administrative action. If you still exceed the standard after the informal period, you move to a formal program, and that formal enrollment counts as your first official body composition failure. Repeated failures after that can lead to administrative action, up to separation.6Department of the Air Force. Body Composition Program Policy Memo

Sample Benchmarks by Age and Gender

The examples below show how the standards translate into real numbers. Full charts are published by the Air Force Personnel Center.

Males 25 to 29

Complete the 2.0-mile run in 18:20 or faster to meet the minimum; 13:36 or faster earns the full 50 points. One-minute push-ups require at least 15 repetitions, and one-minute sit-ups at least 38.3Department of the Air Force. Air Force Physical Fitness Assessment Scoring Charts

Females 30 to 34

The 2.0-mile run minimum is 22:50, with maximum points at 15:48 or faster. Push-ups require 14 repetitions minimum, with 46 or more earning full points. Sit-ups require at least 26.3Department of the Air Force. Air Force Physical Fitness Assessment Scoring Charts

Members Over 60

Males over 60 must finish the run within 23:36, complete at least 11 push-ups, and (if choosing the plank) hold a forearm plank for at least 1:05. Sit-up minimums drop to 19 repetitions.7Air Force Personnel Center. Air Force Physical Fitness Assessment Scoring Charts

HAMR and Plank Maximums

Choosing the HAMR instead of the run requires more than 100 shuttles at maximum for a male under 25, scaling down to 71 shuttles at 60-plus. For females, the range runs from 83 shuttles under 25 down to 48 at 60-plus. Earning full core points on the forearm plank takes roughly 3:30 for younger Airmen and about 2:50 for the oldest bracket.3Department of the Air Force. Medical Exemptions and the 2-Kilometer Walk

A medical provider issues a physical profile when a condition prevents a component. You still take every component your health allows. For exempt members, scoring divides points earned by points possible on the components completed, then converts the ratio to a 100-point scale.2Department of the Air Force. DAFMAN 36-2905 – Air Force Physical Fitness Readiness Program

If you’re cleared to walk but not run, you can take a 2-kilometer walk. It’s pass/fail only, awards no composite points, and cannot qualify you for an Excellent rating. Walk time limits range from 16:16 for males under 30 to 18:53 for females 60-plus.4Air Force Personnel Center. USAF Physical Fitness Readiness Assessment Scoring Charts

How Often You Test

Regular Air Force members test every six months. Air Reserve Component members test every 12 months. Missing your window puts you in an unsatisfactory status by default, with the same consequences as actually failing.2Department of the Air Force. DAFMAN 36-2905 – Air Force Physical Fitness Readiness Program

Between March 1 and June 30, 2026, every test is diagnostic; official scoring under the new standards begins July 1, 2026. During the transition window you can convert a diagnostic score into an official one, which resets your next test date to six months later.8Department of the Air Force. Directive Type Memorandum – Changes to Air Force Physical Fitness Readiness Assessment Program

Outside transition periods, diagnostics work as official practice runs. You may log up to three within any 365-day period, and no earlier than one month before a scheduled official test. After you see the composite score, you decide whether to accept it as official or keep it as diagnostic. After three logged diagnostics in the past year, the next test counts, no opt-out.2Department of the Air Force. DAFMAN 36-2905 – Air Force Physical Fitness Readiness Program

What Happens If You Fail

An unsatisfactory score triggers mandatory enrollment in the Fitness Reconditioning Program within 10 duty days for active-duty members and 60 calendar days for Reserve component members. The program addresses exercise habits, nutrition, and behavior.2Department of the Air Force. DAFMAN 36-2905 – Air Force Physical Fitness Readiness Program

Commanders can escalate administrative actions with each subsequent failure, including deferring or withholding promotion recommendations for enlisted members, delaying officer promotions, and placing the member in a non-deployable status. After a fourth unsatisfactory score within any 24-month period, the unit commander must make a discharge or retention recommendation to the separation authority, provided a medical provider has confirmed no underlying condition is preventing a passing score.2Department of the Air Force. DAFMAN 36-2905 – Air Force Physical Fitness Readiness Program

A failing score also affects assignments. Members executing a permanent change of station need a current, non-expired PFRA through their report-not-later-than date. An unsatisfactory rating classifies you as “Not Ready,” which may mean retesting and passing before departing your current duty station.2Department of the Air Force.
