Air Force Basic Military Training is a 7.5-week program at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in Texas that every enlisted Airman completes before moving on to a technical school. It mixes physical conditioning, classroom instruction, weapons qualification, and a field exercise, and the intensity climbs steadily from the day you arrive.
Before You Ship
You need to be between 17 and 41 years old and hold either a high school diploma or GED to enlist.1U.S. Air Force. Join the Active Duty Air Force You’ll also pass the ASVAB, clear a medical exam at a Military Entrance Processing Station, and meet body composition standards before shipping.
The single best thing you can do in the weeks before you leave is arrive in shape. The Air Force’s suggested benchmarks are a 1.5-mile run under 13:45, at least 25 push-ups, and at least 35 sit-ups for males, and under 16:00 on the run, 15 push-ups, and 30 sit-ups for females.2Air Force Basic Military Training. Are You Ready for Basic Training Meet those and you’ll have a real cushion. Trainees who show up well below those numbers rarely close the gap in time.
What to Pack
The packing list is short on purpose. Bring a debit card and some cash, stationery for letters, a cell phone with charger, prescription glasses in a hard case, and a conservative watch. Leave tobacco, over-the-counter medications, food, supplements, magazines, smart watches, aerosol products, and anything containing alcohol (including some face washes and mouthwashes) at home. Take out body jewelry before you arrive. Anything that shouldn’t be there gets confiscated and returned after graduation.3U.S. Air Force. BMT Packing List
Zero Week: The First Five Days
Most trainees arrive on a Tuesday. The stretch before formal training starts is called Zero Week, and the pace is deliberately overwhelming. You’re assigned to a squadron and meet your Military Training Instructor, the person who’ll run your life for the next two months. Then you cycle through clothing and equipment issue, haircuts, immunizations, blood draws, drug testing, a squadron tour, chapel orientation, and briefings on the Uniform Code of Military Justice.4U.S. Air Force. Zero Week now also includes instruction on sleep hygiene, stress management, and nutrition alongside the traditional introduction to drill, physical training, and dorm standards.5Air & Space Forces Magazine. Air Force Revamps Zero Week at BMT to Better Prepare Recruits for Stress Males get a buzz cut; females have specific hair standards to meet. You’ll also make a short call home to confirm you arrived safely, and by that Saturday you’ll get another call to pass along your mailing address.
A Day in BMT
Reveille is at 5:00 AM. You’ve got a short window to dress, make your bed to spec, and get your dorm area inspection-ready. Physical training usually comes first, then hygiene and final dorm setup. The rest of the day rotates through classroom instruction, drill and ceremonies, and appointments or specialized training blocks. Meals are fast and quiet, with strict rules about how you move through the dining facility. Lights out at 9:00 PM, and the cycle restarts.
The schedule is deliberate. Every minute is accounted for so you learn to operate under time pressure, and dorm inspections happen often. When a trainee fails a standard, the whole flight takes the corrective action. That shared accountability is one of BMT’s main tools for building unit cohesion.
Fitness Testing
PT happens daily and blends running, calisthenics, and strength work. You’ll take an initial fitness assessment shortly after arriving that establishes your baseline. Males who can’t run 1.5 miles in 18:30, or females who can’t finish in 21:35, may be flagged as medically unable to safely complete training.2Air Force Basic Military Training. Are You Ready for Basic Training
The final assessment is a graduation requirement. It’s timed push-ups, sit-ups, and the 1.5-mile run.6U.S. Air Force. Air Force Basic Military Training – Frequently Asked Questions Fail it and you get recycled to an earlier training week to rebuild and retest. Most trainees who arrive in reasonable shape and put honest effort into daily PT pass without trouble.
Classroom, Weapons, and Field Training
Classroom instruction covers Air Force history, rank structure, military customs and courtesies, the law of armed conflict, cyber awareness, and financial readiness. The Air Force core values (Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence in All We Do) run through everything, and MTIs will expect you to explain what each one means.7U.S. Air Force. Vision and Creed
M-4 Qualification
Trainees qualify with the M-4 carbine. Weapons training runs roughly four to five hours of classroom time on handling, safety, and malfunction procedures, followed by about three hours of live fire on the range. Later in training you’ll also fire while wearing a gas mask and chemical protective gear.8U.S. Air Force. First BMT Trainees Experience M-4 Training, Qualification Failing to qualify on the range is one of the common reasons trainees get recycled.
Week 6 and PACER FORGE
Week 6 is the most physically and mentally demanding block, covering Tactical Combat Casualty Care, chemical and biological defense training, and combat skills exercises.9U.S. Air Force. Basic Training Week 6 TCCC teaches how to treat casualties under fire, including tourniquet application and airway management.
The signature field exercise is PACER FORGE, a 36-hour scenario-based event that replaced the older BEAST exercise. Trainees deploy in small, dispersed teams to a simulated forward operating location and work through realistic operational scenarios that test teamwork, decision-making, and the skills learned earlier.10U.S. Air Force. Forging the Next Generation: BMT Leads the Way It’s built around Agile Combat Employment concepts, sleep-deprived by design, and for most trainees it’s the moment BMT stops feeling like school.
CLAW
Creating Leaders, Airmen, and Warriors is a 1.3-mile obstacle course with 13 stations. Trainees move through gender-integrated teams to navigate simulated wartime scenarios, including evading capture, maneuvering through destroyed buildings, and crawling under obstacles.1137th Training Wing. Creating Leaders, Airmen and Warriors Returns Heritage memorials at each obstacle tie the physical challenge to Air Force history.
Your Military Training Instructor
MTIs are non-commissioned officers who function as drill sergeants, teachers, mentors, and disciplinarians at once. They run PT, enforce dorm standards, teach classroom material, and evaluate you at every stage. The approach is firm and demanding because they’re compressing months of behavioral change into weeks.
Expect constant correction in the early weeks, especially on drill movements, dorm layout, and reporting procedures. Trainees who adapt notice a shift by the later weeks: fewer corrections, higher expectations, and an MTI who starts treating them more like a junior Airman than a raw recruit. That transition is the point.
Staying in Touch With Family
Phone access is limited and earned. After the arrival call and the Saturday address call in Zero Week, you’ll get your cell phone during the fourth week and again at the end of the seventh week to coordinate graduation travel with family. Access at other times depends on performance and is at the MTI’s discretion.12Air Force Basic Military Training. BMT Trainee Cell Phone Usage Policy
All calls happen under staff supervision. Voice only. No texting, no photos, no video calls.12Air Force Basic Military Training. BMT Trainee Cell Phone Usage Policy Letters are the main way to stay in touch, which is why stationery is on the packing list. Writing and receiving mail becomes surprisingly important to morale.
Pay During Training
You earn military pay from day one. Most trainees enlist at the E-1 (Airman Basic) rank, which pays $2,407.20 per month in 2026. Because the Air Force provides housing, meals, and uniforms during training, nearly all of that pay is disposable income. Trainees with dependents may qualify for Basic Allowance for Housing at the with-dependents rate for their home area.13Defense Travel Management Office. Basic Allowance for Housing Uniforms are issued in-kind, though female recruits receive a small initial cash clothing allowance of $532.57 for additional items.
If You Fall Behind
Not everyone finishes on schedule. Getting “recycled” means being set back to an earlier training week and reassigned to a different flight that’s just reaching the point you need to repeat. Common reasons are failing the final fitness test, failing M-4 qualification, or missing more than two or three days of training for a medical issue. Recycling isn’t always disciplinary. A hospitalization during week three, for example, means rejoining a new flight starting week three once you’re cleared.
For trainees who can’t adapt at all, the Air Force may initiate an Entry Level Separation. Grounds include persistent failure to progress, inability to adapt to the military environment, lack of self-discipline, or psychological and stress-related symptoms. ELS is a command decision, not something a trainee can request, and the command must believe the difficulties are genuine rather than a deliberate attempt to avoid service. It’s most often granted during basic or technical training, while the service member is still within their first 365 days of active duty.
Graduation Week
The final week is a marked contrast to what came before. The signature event is the Airman’s Run, a 1.5-mile group run through the Pfingston Reception Center with family and friends lining the route.14Air Force Basic Military Training. The Coin Ceremony follows, a retreat where your MTI presents you with the Airman or Guardian coin. That coin marks the official transition from trainee to Airman.14Air Force Basic Military Training. By Friday, graduates ship out to their technical training schools, where they learn the specific skills for their assigned Air Force Specialty Code.15Air Force Basic Military Training. BMT Graduation Information Tech school length varies dramatically by career field, from a few weeks for some support roles to over a year for specialties like cryptologic linguistics or aircraft maintenance.
