An Agoda charge on your credit card statement is a payment processed by Agoda, an online travel booking platform headquartered in Singapore and owned by Booking Holdings Inc. It almost always corresponds to a hotel, flight, or other travel reservation made through Agoda’s website or app. The descriptor typically reads AGODA-B followed by a long booking reference number, such as “AGODA-B922556550.”1Brex. Agoda Charge on Credit Card Statement
If the descriptor carries the Agoda name and that “-B” prefix, the charge is legitimate in the sense that it came from the platform. Whether it matches a booking you meant to make, and whether the amount is right, is a separate question.
What the Descriptor Tells You
Agoda transactions are categorized as travel and hospitality. The billing descriptor keeps the same format across every reservation: “AGODA-B” plus the reference number tied to that specific booking.1Brex. Agoda Charge on Credit Card Statement The number changes; the prefix does not.
If you don’t remember booking anything, check whether anyone else uses the card. A spouse, adult child, or travel companion with access to the card number is the most common explanation for an Agoda charge the primary cardholder didn’t place. Pull up Agoda’s site or app and sign in to any account associated with your email addresses to see whether a matching reservation exists.
Why the Amount May Not Match the Price You Saw
A charge that doesn’t line up with the quoted price is one of the most common frustrations, and it usually traces back to one of a few causes.
Agoda splits property fees into two categories. Mandatory surcharges, such as resort fees or service charges, are collected by Agoda on the hotel’s behalf and included in the price charged to your card. Excluded surcharges are not part of the Agoda charge; the hotel collects them directly from you at check-in.2Agoda Partner Hub. How Do I Manage Additional Fees That split means the total you end up paying for a stay can exceed the amount that shows up under the Agoda descriptor, and it can also mean separate charges you weren’t expecting.
Currency conversion is another factor. If you booked in one currency and your card is billed in another, your bank applies its own exchange rate and may add a foreign transaction fee. Those fees come from the bank, not Agoda, and they will appear only on the card statement, not on the Agoda confirmation.
Errors can also happen on the hotel side. Agoda instructs properties to charge its virtual payment cards in the exact currency and amount their contract specifies, and warns that currency mismatches or manual adjustments can create discrepancies.3Agoda Partner Hub. How Do I Charge Bookings via E-Card You won’t see the back-end mechanics, but the effect can surface as an odd amount or a duplicate charge.
Charges That Appear After a Cancellation
If you canceled a booking and still see a charge, whether that charge is valid depends on the rate’s cancellation policy. Policies vary by property and by rate type.
Cancel while the booking is still within its free-cancellation window and no fee applies. Once the booking moves past that window, cancellations and changes can trigger charges, and Agoda will generally decline requests for a free cancellation unless the property specifically agrees to waive the fee.4Agoda Partner Hub. How Do I Respond to Booking Inquiries
When a guest pushes for a free cancellation on a non-refundable booking, Agoda passes the request to the property, which has 48 hours to accept or decline. If the property accepts, the booking is canceled and the guest receives a full refund. If it declines, the original booking and its charges stand.4Agoda Partner Hub. How Do I Respond to Booking Inquiries For force majeure, natural disaster, or political unrest, Agoda assesses the situation and may waive fees on its own.
How to Dispute an Agoda Charge
Start with Agoda directly. Phone support is available around the clock at (866) 656-8207, and live chat runs through the contact page on the site. There is no direct customer service email, but Agoda offers an online contact form. Consumer advocacy site Elliott.org publishes executive contacts for Agoda, including the SVP of Customer Experience and the CEO, that you can escalate to if standard support doesn’t resolve the issue.5Elliott.org. Before you call, gather what you have: the booking confirmation email, any messages exchanged with Agoda or the property, a screenshot of the charge from your statement, and the cancellation policy shown at the time of booking. Have the booking reference number from the descriptor ready.
If Agoda won’t resolve it, file a chargeback with your card issuer. The Fair Credit Billing Act gives U.S. cardholders the right to dispute billing errors, and card networks run their own dispute processes on top of that. Your issuer will ask for the same documentation, so keep copies.
Watch for Agoda Impersonation Scams
Not every message that carries Agoda’s name comes from Agoda. In June 2025, Hong Kong police reported that a 27-year-old woman lost HK$2.6 million (about US$330,000) to scammers who contacted her over WhatsApp posing as Agoda recruitment staff. The fraudsters offered commissions for “favoriting” hotels on the platform and directed her to send funds across 14 transactions.6The Standard. Woman Loses HK$2.6M to Agoda Impersonation Scam
Agoda does not recruit through WhatsApp, and legitimate companies do not require upfront payments in exchange for commissions. If you get an approach like that, verify it through Agoda’s official site and report the contact to local authorities. A charge on your statement stemming from a scam of this kind is unlikely to show the AGODA-B descriptor, because the money went to the scammer, not to Agoda.
Agoda’s Record on Pricing and Billing
Agoda’s pricing and billing practices have drawn legal challenges in several countries, which is worth knowing if you’re weighing how firmly to press a dispute.
In the United States, a June 2020 class action, Martinez v. Booking Holdings (No. 3:20-cv-01289, S.D. Cal.), alleged that Agoda advertised inflated “original” prices for hotel rooms that were rarely sold at the stated non-discounted rate, and made false claims about limited-time discounts and room availability.7Truth in Advertising. Agoda Travel Website and App The case was moved to arbitration, and the court administratively closed it on August 28, 2024 after the plaintiffs filed a notice regarding a partial arbitration award.8CourtListener. In Japan, the Saitama Organization To Get Rid of Consumer Damage filed a cease-and-desist lawsuit against Agoda in December 2023, alleging that Agoda’s terms cap company liability at $250 regardless of the travel service’s cost and broadly absolve Agoda of responsibility for compensation. Complaints underlying the suit cited denied refunds and instances where customers were turned away from hotels despite holding confirmed reservations.9The Japan Times. In Israel, the Supreme Court on June 23, 2024 affirmed certification of a class action alleging Agoda displayed hotel prices without value-added tax, in violation of Israeli consumer protection law. The court held that mandatory Israeli consumer protections cannot be waived by a standard-form contract choosing foreign law.10EBN Law. None of that changes the immediate mechanics of your charge. It does mean pricing disputes with Agoda are not unusual, and that persistence with both Agoda and your card issuer is often warranted when the numbers don’t add up.
