If you have Parkinson’s disease and served where the government sprayed or stored Agent Orange, the VA treats your illness as service-connected without requiring you to prove the link. Agent Orange Parkinson’s disease VA benefits include monthly disability compensation starting at a 30 percent rating, specialty medical care through a national Parkinson’s network, and, for veterans who need daily help, additional tax-free payments on top of the standard rate. The presumption took effect October 30, 2010, and was broadened in 2021 to cover Parkinsonism, which includes Parkinson’s disease dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies, and multiple system atrophy.1The Michael J. Who Qualifies
Two things have to be true. You need a medical diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease or Parkinsonism, and you need qualifying service in a place and period where the VA presumes herbicide exposure occurred.2U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Agent Orange Exposure and VA Disability Compensation
The recognized locations and dates are:
- Vietnam, including inland waterways or within 12 nautical miles offshore, January 9, 1962 through May 7, 1975.
- Thailand, on any U.S. or Royal Thai military base, January 9, 1962 through June 30, 1976.
- Korea, in or near the DMZ, September 1, 1967 through August 31, 1971.
- Laos, December 1, 1965 through September 30, 1969.
- Cambodia, in Mimot or Krek, Kampong Cham Province, April 16-30, 1969.
- Guam or American Samoa, January 9, 1962 through July 31, 1980.
- Johnston Atoll, January 1, 1972 through September 30, 1977.
- Service in units where C-123 aircraft with Agent Orange residue were used, with repeated contact through flight, ground, or medical duties.
- Direct involvement in transporting, testing, or storing Agent Orange at any location.3VA Public Health. Agent Orange Exposure Locations
Two coverage rules matter if your service was near the edges. Blue Water Navy veterans who served within 12 nautical miles of the Vietnamese coast were added in 2019 by the Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act, with benefits payable starting January 1, 2020.4VA Benefits Administration. Blue Water Navy Veterans Korean DMZ veterans have a narrower path than Vietnam veterans: eligibility depends on whether the Department of Defense determined your specific unit operated in the sprayed area, a 151-mile strip up to 350 yards wide along the southern edge of the DMZ that was hand-sprayed between April 1968 and July 1969.5GovInfo. If you served outside these locations or date ranges, the presumption does not apply, and you would need to submit independent evidence that you were actually exposed to herbicides.
What the Compensation Pays
Parkinson’s disease carries a minimum VA disability rating of 30 percent under Diagnostic Code 8004. When individual symptoms of the disease can be rated separately under other diagnostic codes, and those combined ratings exceed 30 percent, the higher combined rating applies instead of the minimum.6U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Board of Veterans’ Appeals Decision, Citation Nr. 1642543 In practice, veterans with advanced disease often carry combined ratings well above 30 percent by adding separate ratings for lower extremity impairment (up to 80 percent for complete paralysis), upper extremity impairment (up to 70-80 percent), depression (up to 100 percent for total occupational and social impairment), and voiding dysfunction (up to 60 percent).7U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Board of Veterans’ Appeals Decision, Citation Nr. A25016283
Monthly compensation as of December 1, 2025 runs from $552.47 for a veteran rated at 30 percent with no dependents to $3,938.58 for a single veteran rated at 100 percent. A 100 percent rating with a spouse and one child pays $4,318.99 per month.8U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. VA Disability Compensation Rates
Extra Payments if You Need Daily Help
Veterans with advanced Parkinson’s often qualify for Special Monthly Compensation at the Aid and Attendance rate, which is paid on top of the regular disability check and is tax-free. To qualify, you have to show that you regularly need help from another person for daily activities like dressing, bathing, eating, using the bathroom, or protecting yourself from ordinary hazards. The need has to be regular, but not constant.9U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Board of Veterans’ Appeals Decision, Citation Nr. 1639486
Board of Veterans’ Appeals decisions have granted Aid and Attendance for Parkinson’s patients based on physician statements documenting severe tremor, unsteady gait, frequent falls, and inability to perform self-care. Veterans who are essentially confined to home because of their service-connected disabilities may qualify for the housebound rate of SMC instead, which requires a single disability rated at 100 percent plus additional disabilities independently rated at 60 percent or more.10U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. How to File
If you have never filed a claim for Parkinson’s disease, submit VA Form 21-526EZ online, by mail, or in person.2U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Agent Orange Exposure and VA Disability Compensation A few situations change the form:
- If a previous claim was denied, file a supplemental claim on VA Form 20-0995 with new evidence.
- If your claim for Parkinsonism was denied before it was added to the presumptive list in 2021, the VA may automatically review your case without a new filing.
- If you are a Blue Water Navy veteran whose claim was denied before the 2019 Act, file a supplemental claim citing that law. Retroactive benefits may reach back to the date of the original claim.11National Veterans Legal Services Program. FAQs for Blue Water Vietnam Veterans
The VA also offers a free Agent Orange Registry health exam. It is not a compensation and pension evaluation, but it can flag health concerns tied to herbicide exposure and creates a record that may support a later claim.2U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Why Presumptive Claims Still Get Denied
The presumption removes the need to prove causation, but it does not remove every hurdle. Common reasons for denial include military records that don’t clearly document service in a qualifying location, no verified diagnosis from a qualified provider, missing a scheduled Compensation and Pension exam, and procedural errors during the VA’s review. Veterans whose service falls outside the recognized locations and dates carry a heavier burden because they must prove actual exposure.
If your claim is denied, you have three options:
- Higher-Level Review, where a senior VA reviewer re-examines the existing evidence without new submissions.
- Supplemental Claim, where you submit new and relevant evidence such as updated medical records or buddy statements.
- Appeal to the Board of Veterans’ Appeals, where a Veterans Law Judge reviews the claim, with options for a hearing or additional evidence.
VA Health Care Through the PADRECC Network
Disability compensation is one benefit. The other is specialty medical care. The VA runs the Parkinson’s Disease Research, Education and Clinical Centers, established in 2001, with six centers of excellence in Houston, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Portland/Seattle, Richmond, and San Francisco.12VA Parkinson’s Disease. PADRECC National Program These centers provide specialty diagnosis and treatment, clinical trial access, pre-surgical evaluation for procedures like deep brain stimulation, and telemedicine consultations with neurologists, neurosurgeons, and nurses.
The network uses a hub-and-spoke model. The six PADRECCs are backed by regional movement disorder centers and more than 51 consortium sites across the VA system, so veterans who cannot travel to a major center still have access to specialized care.13VA Parkinson’s Disease. VA Parkinson’s Disease Care Access starts with a referral from your VA primary care provider or neurologist. The network also runs support groups, educational conferences, and a hotline at 1-800-949-1001.
Survivor Benefits
Parkinson’s disease is one of roughly 20 conditions the VA recognizes as presumptively connected to Agent Orange or other herbicide exposure.14VA Public Health. Agent Orange Diseases If a veteran died from Parkinson’s disease or Parkinsonism, surviving spouses, dependent children, and dependent parents may be eligible for survivor benefits based on that service connection.
