An Age of Learning charge on your credit card is almost always a recurring subscription to ABCmouse or one of the company’s sister children’s education products, billed automatically after a free trial or at each renewal date. To stop it, you cancel through the same channel you signed up on. To get money back for a charge that already posted, you make a separate refund request.
Which Product Is Actually Billing You
Your statement will usually just read “Age of Learning” rather than name the specific service. The company runs ABCmouse for children ages two through eight, Adventure Academy for older kids, ReadingIQ (a digital library), and a separate product called ABCmouse Mastery with its own billing terms.1Age of Learning. ABCmouse2Age of Learning. Mastery Terms and Conditions ABCmouse is by far the most common source.
To identify which one, search the email account you use for app downloads for a welcome message or receipt from ABCmouse, Adventure Academy, or ReadingIQ. You can also check the subscription list in your phone’s settings or your app store purchase history.
Why the Charge Keeps Coming Back
Age of Learning uses automatic renewal. You (or someone in your household) signed up for a free trial or introductory offer, and when that period ended, the plan converted to a paid membership that renews on a set cycle until canceled.3Age of Learning. Adventure Academy Terms and Conditions ABCmouse has historically offered a 30-day free trial that rolls into paid billing.
One thing to know before you do anything else: deleting the app from your phone does not stop the charge. The subscription is a separate agreement between you and either Age of Learning or your app store, and removing the app just removes the icon. Billing continues until you formally cancel in the right place.
Is the Amount Correct?
Compare the charge on your statement to current pricing:
- ABCmouse: $14.99 per month or $45.00 per year4ABCmouse. How Much Does ABCmouse Cost? Subscription Plan Overview
- Adventure Academy: $12.99 per month or $45.00 per year5Adventure Academy Support. What Are the Subscription Plans, and How Much Do They Cost?
- ReadingIQ: $7.99 per month after a free trial
If your charge is meaningfully higher, check whether you have more than one active subscription across the company’s products, whether an annual renewal just hit, or whether app store sales tax (which varies by state) is bumping up the total.
How to Cancel
The cancellation path depends entirely on where you originally subscribed. Canceling in the wrong place accomplishes nothing.
If You Signed Up on the Website or Directly in the App
Open the ABCmouse app and log in. Tap the profile icon in the upper-left corner, tap Settings in the lower-left, then select Manage My Account. On the Membership Details page, tap Cancel Membership at the bottom and follow the prompts to confirm.6ABCmouse Support. How to Cancel Your ABCmouse Subscription (Direct Billing) Adventure Academy uses a similar flow inside its own app or website account settings.
You will keep access through the end of the current billing period. Screenshot the confirmation. If a charge posts after your cancellation date, that screenshot is your proof.
If You Signed Up Through the App Store
On iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, find Age of Learning, and tap Cancel Subscription.7Apple Support. If You Want to Cancel a Subscription From Apple On Android, open the Play Store, tap your profile icon, go to Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions, and cancel there.
Age of Learning cannot stop charges that flow through Apple or Google. You have to cancel where the money is actually being collected.
How to Get a Refund for a Charge That Already Posted
Canceling stops future billing. It does not undo a charge that already went through. That requires a separate request, and again, the right place depends on the billing path.
Direct Billing Refunds
Contact Age of Learning support through the help center for the specific product: support.abcmouse.com for ABCmouse, support.adventureacademy.com for Adventure Academy.8Age of Learning. Contact Have the account email, the charge date, and the amount ready. The company’s terms don’t specify a refund window, so how quickly you contact them and whether the account was used after renewal will both matter.
App Store Refunds
For an Apple purchase, go to reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in with your Apple ID, locate the charge, and select Request a refund. Apple reviews each request on its own merits.9Apple Support. Subscriptions and Billing For Google Play, use the Play Store or play.google.com and follow the subscription refund steps. The two stores make their own decisions independently of Age of Learning, so a denial from one doesn’t preclude asking the other if you were somehow double-billed.
Disputing the Charge With Your Bank
If the company refuses a refund and you believe the charge was unauthorized or posted after you canceled, the Fair Credit Billing Act lets you dispute a billing error in writing to your credit card issuer within 60 days of the statement date that first showed the charge.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. United States Code Title 15 – 1666 Include your name, account number, the charge amount, and the reason you believe it’s an error. The issuer must acknowledge within 30 days and resolve the dispute within two billing cycles.
A chargeback works, but treat it as a last resort. Merchants pay fees when chargebacks hit, and the routine response is a permanent account ban. If your child has months of saved progress on ABCmouse or Adventure Academy, that history may become inaccessible. Try the company’s refund process first.
The Federal Rules Working in Your Favor
Several federal protections apply to subscription billing, and Age of Learning has already been on the losing end of one.
In 2020, the Federal Trade Commission sued the company, alleging it billed ABCmouse users without proper authorization and made cancellation unreasonably difficult. The case resolved in a $10 million settlement and required the company to overhaul how it bills and cancels.11Federal Trade Commission. Age of Learning, Inc. (ABCmouse) If you feel the cancellation process is still harder than it should be, that history adds weight to a complaint filed at ftc.gov.
Beyond that one case, the Restore Online Shoppers Confidence Act requires any online seller using auto-renewal to disclose all material terms before taking payment, obtain informed consent, and provide a simple way to stop recurring charges.12United States Congress. Restore Online Shoppers Confidence Act And in late 2024, the FTC finalized a click-to-cancel rule requiring cancellation to be as easy as sign-up, with charges stopping immediately once you cancel.13Federal Trade Commission. Federal Trade Commission Announces Final Click-to-Cancel Rule Making It Easier for Consumers to End Recurring Subscriptions and Memberships If a company routes you through retention offers, phone trees, or multi-step processes just to stop billing, those rules are the basis for a complaint.
What to Have Ready Before You Reach Out
Whether you’re contacting Age of Learning, an app store, or your bank, the following information cuts the back-and-forth substantially:
- The email address tied to the account. This is the single most important item. If you don’t know which email was used, search your inboxes for past messages from ABCmouse, Adventure Academy, or Age of Learning.
- Where you subscribed: the website, the Apple App Store, or the Google Play Store. Support will route you differently depending on the answer.
- The transaction date and amount, straight from your statement. Note each charge if there’s more than one.
- The last four digits of the card or account that was charged, to verify ownership.
- Any cancellation confirmation you already received. A screenshot or confirmation email makes the case for you.
