Age Limit for Army Rangers: Ranger School and 75th Regiment Rules

The age limit for Army Rangers depends on which “Ranger” you mean. Ranger School, the Army’s 61-day leadership course, sets a standard age range of 17 to 34, with waivers granted case by case.¹ The 75th Ranger Regiment, the special operations unit soldiers join through the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program (RASP), publishes no age cap at all.² The practical ceiling for anyone starting from scratch is the Army’s enlistment age, which as of March 2026 is 42.³

Two Different Rangers, Two Different Rules

Ranger School is a voluntary leadership course focused on small-unit tactics and sustained performance under stress. It is open to officers and enlisted soldiers across multiple branches and is not tied to a single Military Occupational Specialty.⁴ Graduating earns the Ranger tab. It does not make you a member of the 75th Ranger Regiment.

The Regiment is the operational special operations unit that conducts raids, airfield seizures, and special reconnaissance. Joining it requires passing RASP, a separate selection program. Ranger School attendance, while technically voluntary, is treated as necessary for leadership roles inside the Regiment.⁵ The age rules differ for each.

Ranger School: 17 to 34, With Waivers

The published age range for Ranger School is 17 to 34, and waivers beyond 34 are considered on a case-by-case basis.¹ Those waivers can go a long way. In July 2016, Command Sgt. Maj. Rob Fortenberry graduated at age 45, the oldest graduate in the school’s history.⁶ The 34 cutoff is a default, not a hard ceiling, though approval is not guaranteed.

The 75th Ranger Regiment: No Published Age Cap

The Regiment does not publish an age limit for RASP candidates. Its stated position is that it “prides itself on holding all members to the same standard regardless of age, gender, or Military Occupation Specialty.”² Because there is no cap, there is no age waiver process for the Regiment.¹

Other eligibility rules still narrow the field. Candidates must be active-duty soldiers; National Guard and Reserve members are not eligible. Enlisted soldiers in pay grades E-1 through E-5 attend RASP 1, while senior NCOs, warrant officers, and officers attend RASP 2.⁷ A candidate must also complete Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training before screening for RASP.⁵ For someone coming in off the street, the Army’s enlistment age becomes the real ceiling.

Army Enlistment Age Sets the Outer Limit

As of March 2026, the Army raised its maximum enlistment age from 35 to 42 under Army Regulation 601-210. The change applies to the Regular Army, Army National Guard, and Army Reserve, though only Regular Army soldiers are eligible for the 75th Ranger Regiment.⁸ The minimum age is 17 with parental permission, 18 without.³

In theory, someone could enlist at 42, finish initial training, and volunteer for RASP. Whether that is realistic depends almost entirely on the physical standards, which do not bend for age.

Fitness Standards Do Not Adjust for Age

Every Ranger candidate meets the same benchmarks, whatever their year of birth.

Before starting RASP, candidates complete a pre-RASP fitness test that includes 41 hand-release push-ups, a two-minute-and-35-second plank, a two-mile run, six pull-ups, and a six-mile ruck march. Inside RASP, candidates must also finish a 15-meter swim in full uniform, a five-mile run under 40 minutes, and a 12-mile ruck march with a 35-pound rucksack.⁵ RASP has historically washed out 50 percent or more of its candidates, with many voluntarily dropping.⁹

As of April 2025, Ranger School uses the new Ranger Physical Fitness Assessment. In ACUs and boots, candidates complete an 800-meter run, 30 dead-stop push-ups, a 100-meter sprint, 16 lifts of 40-pound sandbags onto a platform, a 50-meter farmer’s carry with two 40-pound water cans, and movement drills, all within 14 minutes. They then change into PT gear for a four-mile run under 32 minutes and six chin-ups.¹⁰ The standards apply uniformly across all age groups.¹¹

How Ranger Age Rules Compare to Other Special Operations Units

The Ranger window sits in the middle of the special operations range:

Army Special Forces (Green Berets): 20 to 36 for current soldiers, 19 to 34 for those joining from civilian life, waivers possible.¹¹²
Navy SEALs: 17 to 28 for civilians without waivers; officers may enter up to 42. Active-duty time can be subtracted from a candidate’s age case by case.
Air Force Special Warfare: 17 to 42 generally, capped at 39 for Pararescue and Combat Controller roles.
Marine Reconnaissance: 17 to 28, with waivers based on prior military experience.
Marine Raiders (MARSOC): no specific age limit for Assessment and Selection.¹

The combination of a 17-to-34 window for Ranger School with available waivers, and no formal cap for the Regiment itself, makes the Ranger path more age-flexible than the SEAL or Reconnaissance pipelines. The Regiment’s recruiting position is simple: meet the standard, and the door is open.²
