The Advanced Learner Loan is a government-backed tuition loan for adults aged 19 and over studying approved Level 3 to Level 6 qualifications at a training provider in England. The money goes straight to your college, there’s no credit check, and you only start repaying once you earn above a set income threshold. Repayment terms depend on when your course started: courses that began on or after 1 August 2023 sit on Plan 5, with a £25,000 threshold and a 40-year write-off; earlier courses sit on Plan 2, with a higher threshold and a 30-year write-off.
Who Can Get One
You must be 19 or older on the first day of your course. There is no upper age limit, so the loan is open to someone at 25 or 55 on the same terms.1GOV.UK. Advanced Learner Loan – Eligibility
Residency is the main filter. You qualify as a UK national or Irish citizen, or if you have settled status with no restrictions on how long you can stay. In most cases you must also have lived in the UK, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, or a British overseas territory for at least three continuous years before your course start date. Holidays and other temporary absences don’t break that three-year count. Refugee status, humanitarian protection, and certain family-member categories can also qualify, with the exact rules depending on circumstances.1GOV.UK. Advanced Learner Loan – Eligibility
Your income and existing debts are not part of the decision. There is no credit check, and approval does not turn on your financial situation.
What the Loan Covers
It pays tuition fees for qualifications at Level 3 through Level 6, including A levels, Tech Levels, and Access to Higher Education Diplomas. The course has to be delivered by a training provider in England that holds approval from the Education and Skills Funding Agency.1GOV.UK. Advanced Learner Loan – Eligibility2GOV.UK. Course fees only. It cannot be used for living costs, rent, travel, or any other day-to-day expense.3GOV.UK. Advanced Learner Loan – What You’ll Get
You can hold up to four loans in total, and more than one can run at the same time. A different subject at the same qualification level is fine. A levels are treated more generously: you can take a loan for each individual A level, up to four, and if your provider splits each A level into two separate courses the count can run as high as eight for A levels alone, with three further loans available for non-A-level courses on top. Access to Higher Education courses are limited to one application.3GOV.UK. Advanced Learner Loan – What You’ll Get
How to Apply
Start with your college or training provider, not the website. Before you can submit anything you need a Learning and Funding Information letter from the provider. It carries the UK Provider Reference Number, the learning aim title, the learning aim reference, and the course fee. Without that letter you cannot finish the application.4GOV.UK. Learning and Funding Information Letter Guidance 2026 to 2027
With the letter in hand, you apply online through Student Finance England at student-finance.service.gov.uk. You register for an account, enter the course details from your letter, and add your personal information. You can apply without a National Insurance number, but the loan cannot be paid in full until you supply one. A postal application is available if you can’t apply online. The Student Loans Company usually confirms the outcome in writing within about two weeks for online applications; postal applications take longer.5GOV.UK. Advanced Learner Loan – How to Apply
How the Money Reaches Your Provider
You never touch the money. Once your course is underway, the Student Loans Company pays your tuition fees in scheduled instalments directly to the provider. The payment date each month is fixed: the third Wednesday.6Student Loans Company. Advanced Learner Loan – Payment and Drawdown Calendar
Payments depend on attendance. Nothing is released to the provider until you have attended for at least two weeks. After that first confirmation, your provider submits quarterly attendance returns, and payments keep flowing as long as you remain enrolled.7Student Loans Company. How Repayment Works
Your course start date decides which repayment plan you’re on, and the two plans differ on the income threshold, the interest rate, and how long the balance lasts before it’s written off.
Plan 2: Courses That Started Before 1 August 2023
Repayments begin once your annual income exceeds £29,385 for the 2026–2027 tax year, which is £2,448 a month. You pay 9% of everything you earn above that threshold.8GOV.UK. Student Loans – A Guide to Terms and Conditions 2026 to 2027
Interest is tied to the Retail Price Index plus up to 3%, depending on income. Once you’ve finished or left the course, borrowers earning at or below the repayment threshold are charged RPI only, those earning £51,245 or more are charged RPI plus 3%, and incomes between those points sit on a sliding scale. For 2026–2027 the government has capped the maximum Plan 2 interest rate at 6%.9Student Loans Company. Advanced Learner Loan – Quick Guide on Repayment 2025 to 202610GOV.UK. Plan 5: Courses That Started on or After 1 August 2023
Repayments start once your annual income exceeds £25,000, equivalent to £2,083 a month or £480 a week. The rate is still 9% of income above the threshold.8GOV.UK. Interest is simpler on Plan 5: RPI only, with no income-based add-on. The trade-off is the write-off period, which runs for 40 years rather than 30.9Student Loans Company. Advanced Learner Loan – Quick Guide on Repayment 2025 to 2026
How Repayments Are Collected
If you’re employed, your employer deducts repayments through PAYE, so the money comes out before your pay reaches your account. You need to tell your employer which plan you’re on. If you’re self-employed, repayments go through your annual Self Assessment return.9Student Loans Company. Advanced Learner Loan – Quick Guide on Repayment 2025 to 2026
Voluntary repayments are allowed at any time to clear the balance faster, but they don’t reduce the automatic deductions from your salary or your Self Assessment bill for the year. If you overpay after the loan is fully cleared you can request a refund of the excess, but voluntary payments made while the loan was still active aren’t refundable.11GOV.UK. The Access to Higher Education Write-Off
There’s one route where the loan effectively costs nothing. If you take an Advanced Learner Loan for an Access to Higher Education Diploma and then complete a higher education qualification such as a degree, the Student Loans Company writes off the entire balance of your original Access to HE loan.9Student Loans Company. Advanced Learner Loan – Quick Guide on Repayment 2025 to 2026
You have to actually finish the higher education course. Dropping out of university after starting leaves the original Access to HE balance in place and under normal repayment rules.
Leaving or Switching Your Course
If you leave within the first two weeks, no payments will have gone to your provider, so you owe nothing. Leave after that and you’re liable to repay whatever has already been paid on your behalf, plus the interest accrued on that amount. Once you stop attending, payments to the provider stop too, so you aren’t charged for the part of the course you didn’t do.7Student Loans Company. Advanced Learner Loan Frequently Asked Questions
Before you enrol, your provider should give you a written agreement setting out the fees and what you’d owe if you withdraw early. Read it carefully. Some providers charge the full term’s fees regardless of when you leave; others prorate by attendance.7Student Loans Company. Advanced Learner Loan Frequently Asked Questions
If you move to a different training provider, your original provider notifies the Student Loans Company and records you as a withdrawal. Your new provider issues a fresh Learning and Funding Information letter, and you apply for an additional loan. That letter should reflect any prior learning so you aren’t funded again for content you’ve already covered.
Benefits, Bankruptcy, and Cancellation
Because the loan only covers tuition and is paid directly to your provider, it isn’t counted as income for Universal Credit. Tuition-fee student finance is excluded from the UC calculation. Maintenance loans are treated differently and do count as income, but the Advanced Learner Loan isn’t a maintenance loan.12GOV.UK. Universal Credit and Students
Advanced Learner Loans survive bankruptcy. They’re specifically excluded from bankruptcy debts, so you remain liable to repay both during and after discharge.7Student Loans Company. Advanced Learner Loan Frequently Asked Questions
The loan is cancelled if the borrower dies. Beyond death, the standard write-off period (30 years on Plan 2, 40 years on Plan 5), and the Access to HE route, there is no general hardship-based forgiveness.
