On the push side of an accessible swinging door, the ADA requires at least 48 inches of clear depth for a forward approach, and 42 inches of depth for a hinge-side or latch-side approach. Side clearance and additional depth depend on which direction the user approaches from and whether the door has a closer, a latch, or both. The exact ADA door clearance on the push side comes from Table 404.2.4.1 in the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design.
How the Measurements Work
Two dimensions define every push-side clearance. The perpendicular measurement is the depth of clear floor space extending straight out from the closed door. The parallel measurement is the width of clear space running alongside the door, taken beyond the latch side for most approaches and beyond the hinge side for one. Both are measured with the door closed.
Every approach shares one baseline: the clear floor space must be at least as wide as the door opening. What changes between approaches is how much depth and side clearance a wheelchair or scooter user needs to line up with the hardware and push through the swing arc without being clipped.
Forward Approach
A head-on push requires at least 48 inches of depth perpendicular to the closed door. No extra clearance beyond the latch side is required for a basic forward push, because the user is squared up with the opening.
One exception matters. If the door has both a closer and a latch, 12 inches of additional clearance are required beyond the latch side.1U.S. Access Board. ABA Chapter 4 – Accessible Routes That extra room lets the user reach the latch while the wheelchair extends past the frame. Without it, someone fighting closer resistance while operating the latch can end up stuck at an angle with nowhere to finish the motion.
Hinge-Side Approach
The push-side hinge approach is the tightest of the three, because the user has to pivot around the door as it swings away. The standards require 42 inches of depth perpendicular to the doorway and 22 inches of clearance parallel to the doorway, measured beyond the hinge side rather than the latch side.1U.S. Access Board. When the door has both a closer and a latch, the perpendicular depth increases to 48 inches. The added 6 inches compensates for closer resistance while the user is still turning into the opening. The 22-inch hinge-side clearance stays the same regardless of hardware.
Latch-Side Approach
A push-side latch approach requires 42 inches of perpendicular depth and 24 inches of parallel clearance beyond the latch side.1U.S. Access Board. ABA Chapter 4 – Accessible Routes The 24-inch side clearance is required no matter what hardware is on the door, because the user needs room to slide alongside the door, operate the latch, and push through without the wheelchair blocking the swing.
If a closer is installed, perpendicular depth increases by 6 inches to 48 inches. Unlike the forward approach, where extra room is triggered only by a closer-and-latch combination, the latch-side approach adds depth for a closer alone. A user coming from this angle is already fighting geometry, and closer resistance on top of that makes 42 inches too tight to clear the door before it pushes back.
Push-Side Clearances at a Glance
- Forward approach: 48 inches deep, no side clearance required. Add 12 inches beyond the latch side when both a closer and a latch are present.
- Hinge-side approach: 42 inches deep and 22 inches beyond the hinge side. Depth increases to 48 inches when both a closer and a latch are present.
- Latch-side approach: 42 inches deep and 24 inches beyond the latch side. Depth increases to 48 inches when a closer is present.
Floor Surface Within the Clearance Zone
The clearance dimensions only work if the floor inside them is flat. Section 404.2.4.4 requires the floor or ground surface within every maneuvering clearance area to be essentially level, with no changes in level permitted. The only exceptions are slopes no steeper than 1:48, which is a barely perceptible pitch used for drainage, and thresholds that meet the standard’s height limits.1U.S. Access Board. For new construction, thresholds cannot exceed half an inch in height, and any portion above a quarter inch must have a beveled edge with a slope no steeper than 1:2. Existing or altered thresholds may go up to three-quarters of an inch, but both sides must be beveled at 1:2 or flatter.2U.S. Access Board. Chapter 4 – Entrances, Doors, and Gates A small lip that catches a caster wheel can stop a wheelchair cold, which is why the tolerances are tight.
Don’t Confuse Push-Side and Pull-Side Numbers
The most common measurement error is mixing push-side and pull-side hinge dimensions. The hinge-side push approach is 42 inches deep and 22 inches beyond the hinge; a 54-inch by 42-inch figure that sometimes circulates online is actually the pull-side hinge approach. Applying the pull-side numbers to a push-side condition builds the wrong clearance zone, and the fix once walls are up usually means relocating the door.
