ADA Pull Side Clearance: Approaches, Exceptions, and Existing Buildings

The ADA pull side clearance for a front approach is 60 inches deep and extends 18 inches past the latch side of the door. Approach the same door from the hinge side or the latch side and the required dimensions shift, and adding a door closer increases the depth by another 6 inches. Front Approach on the Pull Side

The front pull approach covers the situation most people picture: someone facing the door head-on and pulling it toward them. The clearance zone must be at least 60 inches deep measured perpendicular to the doorway, and it must extend at least 18 inches past the latch side of the door measured parallel to the doorway.1U.S. Access Board. The 60 inches lets a wheelchair user sit back far enough that the swinging door clears their knees and footrests. The 18-inch strip beyond the latch matters just as much. Without it, someone using a wheelchair has to back up while pulling the handle at the same time, which is difficult or impossible for people with limited upper body strength. Walls, planters, drinking fountains, and furniture that eat into either dimension break the approach.

Hinge-Side Approach on the Pull Side

A hinge-side approach is harder because the door’s full arc swings across the person’s path. The standards allow two dimension combinations:1U.S. Access Board. Architectural Barriers Act – Chapter 4 Accessible Routes

  • 60 inches of depth perpendicular to the doorway with at least 36 inches of width beyond the hinge side, or
  • 54 inches of depth with at least 42 inches of width beyond the hinge side.

Less depth requires more lateral space, and vice versa. The second option is useful in tighter corridors where the full 60 inches is not available but width is. Both keep a wheelchair user from getting wedged between the swinging door and an adjacent wall.

Latch-Side Approach on the Pull Side

When the approach runs along the latch side, the depth depends on whether the door has a closer. Without a closer, the maneuvering clearance must be at least 48 inches deep, with 24 inches beyond the latch side of the frame.1U.S. Access Board. With a closer, that depth increases by 6 inches, to 54 inches. The 24-inch latch-side dimension does not change. The extra depth compensates for the spring tension of the closer. Pulling against that resistance while steering a wheelchair takes more leverage, and leverage comes from sitting farther back.

This closer adjustment trips up a lot of building owners. A corridor that measured fine during construction can go non-compliant the day maintenance installs a closer without rechecking the clearances.

Conditions That Void the Clearance

Meeting the dimensions on paper is not the same as meeting them in practice. The floor inside every maneuvering clearance zone must be stable, firm, and slip-resistant, and the slope cannot exceed 1:48 in any direction.2U.S. Access Board. Carpet in the clearance zone cannot have pile deeper than half an inch measured to the backing. Edges must be secured with trim along the full exposed length, and any trim rising above a quarter inch must be beveled.3U.S. Access Board. Thresholds in new construction cannot exceed half an inch, and any threshold above a quarter inch needs a beveled edge with a slope no steeper than 1:2. Existing or altered thresholds may reach three-quarters of an inch, but both sides must be beveled.4U.S. Access Board. Recessed doors interact with the clearance rules in a specific way. If any obstruction within 18 inches of the latch side projects more than 8 inches from the face of the door, the clearance must be sized for a forward approach and sit no more than 8 inches from the door face. Operating the Door Inside the Clearance

The clearance dimensions assume the person can actually work the door once they reach it. Hardware must be usable with one hand and without tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist, and it must be mounted between 34 and 48 inches above the floor.4U.S. Access Board. Interior doors have a maximum opening force of 5 pounds. That cap applies to the sustained force during the opening motion, not the initial force needed to overcome the door’s inertia. Closers must be adjusted so the door takes at least 5 seconds to sweep from a 90-degree open position to 12 degrees from the latch.1U.S. Access Board. Closers drift out of adjustment constantly on high-traffic doors. A stopwatch check is the quickest way to catch a fast-closing door before an inspector does.

Existing Buildings

The full clearance dimensions apply to new construction and alterations. Existing buildings operate under a different rule: barrier removal is required when it is “readily achievable,” meaning accomplishable without much difficulty or expense. Whether a specific fix qualifies depends on the size of the business, its financial resources, and the cost of the change. When the dimensions cannot physically be met in an older building, power-assisted doors and remote-operated openers can satisfy the access requirement without moving walls.
