An Acima settlement offer is a proposal from Acima Leasing to close out your lease for less than you currently owe, either through an “Early Settlement Option” on an active delinquent account or a lump-sum payoff on a charged-off account. Accepting can cut the balance substantially, but it leaves a negative mark on your credit report, permanently bars you from financing again through Acima, and offers no path to having the tradeline removed. Whether to take the offer depends on whether the debt is valid, whether you can reliably make the payments, and what the alternative collection activity would look like.
The Two Kinds of Offers Acima Makes
Acima’s settlement offers fall into two categories, and the one you’re looking at determines how much room you have to negotiate.
The first is what Acima calls an Early Settlement Option, or ESO. This comes up when a consumer has fallen behind on payments and tries to return the merchandise. According to a Consumer Financial Protection Bureau complaint filed in 2024, Acima has told consumers it lacks a “pickup team” in their area and steered them into an ESO instead.1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. CFPB v. Acima Holdings Complaint Under an ESO, you pay “a substantial percentage of the remaining Full Term Cost” and keep the goods. Acima treats these as discretionary courtesy arrangements, not contractual rights.
The second is a charged-off account settlement. If you stopped paying entirely, Acima eventually charges off the account and may later offer a lump sum for a fraction of the balance. Consumer reports on credit forums describe offers running roughly 20% to 50% of the outstanding balance. One consumer reported a $150 settlement offer on a $757 charge-off; another was offered $99 on a $200 balance.2MyFICO Forums. Question on Charged-Off Account With Acima
One structural point matters here. The CFPB complaint states that “Acima Credit held, and continues to hold, all debts and all assets” and that Acima generally does not attempt to repossess goods.1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. CFPB v. Acima Holdings Complaint Because Acima keeps the debt in-house rather than selling it to a third-party buyer for pennies on the dollar, its willingness to accept a deep discount may be narrower than what a debt buyer would accept.
What Happens to Your Credit If You Accept
This is the part most consumers underestimate. Acima reports settled accounts to the credit bureaus with the code “AU,” meaning “settled for less than owed.”1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. CFPB v. Acima Holdings Complaint The CFPB alleged that Acima historically failed to warn consumers this would happen before steering them into an ESO.
Once settled, the balance updates to zero and the account is noted as “paid” or “settled for less than full balance.” The derogatory entry itself stays on your credit report until it ages off, generally seven years and six months from the date of first delinquency.2MyFICO Forums. Question on Charged-Off Account With Acima Paying does not restart or shorten that clock.
Pay-for-Delete Requests Are Refused
The most common follow-up question is whether Acima will remove the tradeline in exchange for payment. Based on consumer reports, the answer is no. Acima reportedly declines pay-for-delete requests, and consumers who have sent goodwill letters after settling have reported that Acima refused to remove the entry.2MyFICO Forums. Other Conditions Attached to a Settlement
A few strings come with any Acima settlement, and they’re worth knowing before you sign.
If you accept an ESO, you are permanently barred from financing future purchases through Acima.1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. CFPB v. Acima Holdings Complaint If you never intend to use Acima again, this doesn’t matter. If lease-to-own is a regular part of how you buy household goods, it does.
Acima has also stated through Better Business Bureau responses that if any payment within a settlement plan is declined or returned, the plan is voided and the lease reverts to its original, higher payment schedule.3Better Business Bureau. When to Dispute Instead of Pay
Not every Acima balance is a debt you actually owe. The company has faced a significant volume of identity-theft complaints where leases were opened in consumers’ names without their knowledge. Billing disputes account for nearly half of the 1,495 BBB complaints filed against Acima Digital over the past three years, with common grievances including disputes over settlement payment allocations, unauthorized account openings, and difficulty resolving fraud claims.3Better Business Bureau. Acima Credit Complaints
If you don’t recognize the lease, don’t recognize the balance, or believe the amount is wrong, you have the right to dispute it before paying anything. The CFPB alleged that Acima’s dispute-investigation practices were themselves deficient, including requiring police reports before investigating identity-theft claims and failing to resolve disputes within the timeframes required by the Fair Credit Reporting Act.1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. CFPB v. Acima Holdings Complaint Filing a dispute directly with each credit bureau, rather than relying solely on Acima’s internal process, is usually the stronger route.
Steps to Take Before You Pay Anything
- Verify the balance. Confirm the amount and the account are legitimately yours. Do not pay a settlement on a lease you didn’t open.
- Get the settlement terms in writing. The CFPB advises consumers to obtain written confirmation of the total amount, the payment schedule, and a statement that the debt will be considered satisfied upon completion, before making any payment. A verbal agreement is not enough.5Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Do I Negotiate a Settlement With a Debt Collector
- Ask specifically how it will be reported. Get confirmation of the tradeline notation you’ll see after the settlement clears. Assume the “AU” code will apply and factor that into your decision.
- Counteroffer low. The National Foundation for Credit Counseling suggests starting negotiations around 20% to 30% of the balance to leave room to move upward. Acima’s BBB responses direct consumers who want to discuss options to contact the company’s Resolutions department.6National Foundation for Credit Counseling. - Keep proof of payment. Save receipts, bank records, and the written settlement agreement in case the account is later reported incorrectly.
If You’re Not Yet Delinquent, You Have Cheaper Exits
A settlement offer is the expensive option. If your lease is still current, two contractual paths get you out of the full-term cost without a credit hit.
Within the first 90 days of the lease (three months in California), you can buy the item outright by paying the remaining lease amount plus a purchase fee, typically around $10 to $25 depending on the state.7Creditcards.com. Acima Credit Guide After 90 days, you can pay a lump sum of roughly 65% of the remaining lease payments, plus any past-due rent, to take ownership.8NerdWallet. You can also return the merchandise at any time to terminate the lease without a penalty, though previous payments are not refunded.8NerdWallet. Acima Credit Lease-to-Own Review Note that the New York Attorney General’s office alleged Acima made returning merchandise “effectively meaningless,” with actual return rates of only 0.11% to 0.17% of transactions.10New York Attorney General. The Bottom Line for Deciding
An Acima settlement offer makes sense when the debt is valid, when you can pay in full or complete every scheduled installment without a hiccup, and when you accept that the account will carry a “settled for less than owed” notation for roughly seven and a half years from the original delinquency. It makes less sense when you don’t recognize the account, when the balance looks wrong, or when you’re being pressured into an ESO after trying to return merchandise Acima won’t pick up. In those situations, dispute first and settle later, if at all.
