DS-160 Home Address: US or India, and How to Fix It

If you live in India and are filling out the DS-160, put your Indian address in the home address field. The form is asking where you currently reside, not where you plan to stay after you land in the United States. For almost every applicant applying from India, the answer to the DS-160 home address US or India question is India, and using your real Indian residence actually helps your case by showing the consular officer you have a life to return to.

What the Home Address Field Is Asking

The home address section wants your complete residential address: flat or house number, street, locality, city, district, state, postal code, and country. It reflects where you live right now. The U.S. Department of State tells applicants to answer every question accurately and completely, and warns that errors can force you to correct the form and reschedule your interview.¹

The form separately asks whether your mailing address is the same as your home address. If it isn’t, you can enter a different one. Plenty of applicants receive mail at a parent’s house or an office while listing their own flat as the home address, and that’s fine.

Where US Addresses Actually Belong on the Form

The confusion usually comes from the fact that the DS-160 asks for several addresses, and only one of them is your home. The others are where any US address you have should go.

Home address: where you currently live. For applicants in India, this is your Indian residence.
Mailing address: where you want correspondence sent, if different from your home.
U.S. point of contact: a person in the United States who can be reached about your visit. This can be a friend, relative, employer, or university official. You provide their name, address, phone number, and relationship to you.
Address where you will stay in the U.S.: the actual street address of the hotel, relative’s home, or employer-provided housing where you will be after arrival. Vague answers don’t work here.

Putting a US address in the home address field when you live in India suggests you’re already residing in the United States. That raises immediate questions about your immigration status and undercuts the ties to India that the rest of your application is trying to establish.

If You Already Live in the US and Are Interviewing in India

One situation trips people up: you’re on a visa such as OPT, you’ve traveled back to India for a new visa stamp, and you’re not sure which address to list. The home address is still the address where you are residing at the time you fill out the form, so use your Indian address for the period you’re there. If you maintain an apartment in the United States, that goes in the section asking where you will stay in the US.

Fitting an Indian Address Into the Fields

The DS-160 was built for American-style addresses, so an Indian address needs a little arranging.

Address Line 1: flat or house number and street name. If your address uses a forward slash such as D-5/7, replace it with a hyphen (D-5-7), because the form doesn’t accept slashes.
Address Line 2: locality, area, or colony name.
City: your city or town.
State/Province: your Indian state, such as Maharashtra or Karnataka.
Postal code: your six-digit PIN.
Country: select India from the dropdown.

The address doesn’t have to match your passport word-for-word. If you’ve moved since your passport was issued, use where you actually live now.

Why the Wrong Address Hurts Your Application

Consular officers read your home address alongside your employment, family situation, and property. When those line up (an Indian address, an Indian employer, family in the same city) the story is consistent. When they don’t (a US home address on an application from someone with an Indian job and Indian family) the officer notices, and inconsistencies invite scrutiny.

There’s a legal edge to this too. Under federal immigration law, anyone who willfully misrepresents a material fact to obtain a visa is inadmissible to the United States.² The Foreign Affairs Manual notes that misrepresentations of residence are not automatically material and are evaluated case by case, but an address that hides the fact you’re already living in the US without authorization would almost certainly qualify, because it goes directly to your status.³ The safe path is the honest one: use the address where you actually live.

If You Realize the Address Is Wrong After You Submitted

You can’t edit a submitted DS-160. To fix an address, fill out a new DS-160 with the correct information, print the new confirmation page, and bring both the original and the updated confirmation to your interview so the officer can see the correction.¹

Timing matters. Some consulates require you to update the new DS-160 barcode number on your appointment record several working days before the interview. Check the specific consulate’s website for its deadline, because procedures vary. The same process applies if your address genuinely changes during processing: submit a new DS-160 and update your appointment.
