967L Tax Code Explained: Reduced Allowance and Take-Home Impact

The 967L tax code tells your employer to let you earn £9,670 in the tax year before deducting any income tax. That is roughly £2,900 less than the standard £12,570 Personal Allowance most people receive under code 1257L. The gap represents adjustments HMRC has made to your allowance, usually for a taxable workplace benefit, underpaid tax carried forward from an earlier year, or a combination of smaller items. If the code is correct for your circumstances, nothing needs to change. If it is not, you could be overpaying tax by about £48 a month at the basic rate.

What the Number and the Letter Mean

Every PAYE code is a number followed by one or more letters. Multiply the number by ten and you get your tax-free allowance for the year: 967 becomes £9,670. HMRC starts from the standard Personal Allowance of £12,570, set by Section 35 of the Income Tax Act 2007, then subtracts adjustments to arrive at the figure in your code.1legislation.gov.uk. The letter L means you are entitled to the standard Personal Allowance.2GOV.UK. What Your Tax Code Means Other letters signal different circumstances. An S prefix (S967L) means you are a Scottish taxpayer and pay Scottish income tax rates.3gov.scot. Scottish Income Tax 2025 to 2026: Factsheet A K prefix means your deductions exceed your Personal Allowance entirely, so the code adds taxable income rather than subtracting it. BR means everything from that job is taxed at basic rate with no allowance applied, which typically happens with a second job.

Why Your Allowance Was Reduced

A 967L code means HMRC has trimmed about £2,900 from your standard allowance. A handful of situations account for most cases.

Taxable Workplace Benefits

The most common cause is benefits in kind: non-cash perks your employer provides that HMRC treats as taxable income. Private medical insurance, a company car, or free fuel for personal use all carry a taxable value. Instead of sending you a separate bill, HMRC subtracts the estimated value of those benefits from your Personal Allowance so the right tax comes out of each pay packet.4GOV.UK. Tax Codes: Why Your Tax Code Might Change If your employer reports benefits worth around £2,900, that is exactly the arithmetic that produces a 967L code.

Underpaid Tax From an Earlier Year

If you finished a previous tax year owing HMRC a modest amount, the agency often recovers it by lowering your current code rather than demanding a lump sum. The debt is spread across the year in equal instalments alongside your normal deductions. This route is only available where the underpayment is less than £3,000 and you filed on time; larger debts trigger a separate payment demand.5GOV.UK. Marriage Allowance Transfer

If you have transferred part of your Personal Allowance to a spouse or civil partner through the Marriage Allowance, your own allowance falls by £1,260.6GOV.UK. Marriage Allowance On its own that would give a code closer to 1131L, but combined with a smaller second adjustment it can bring you into 967L territory.

Several Small Adjustments Combined

Often no single item accounts for the whole £2,900. A £1,500 company benefit, an £800 underpayment being collected, and £600 of untaxed savings interest can all sit inside one code. HMRC rolls them together, which can make a code look more dramatic than any individual item warrants.

What 967L Costs You in Take-Home Pay

With a 967L code, payroll treats about £806 of your monthly earnings as tax-free (£9,670 divided by twelve). Anything above that gets taxed. For taxpayers in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, the basic rate is 20% on income between £12,571 and £50,270, the higher rate is 40% up to £125,140, and the additional rate is 45% above that.7GOV.UK. Income Tax Rates and Personal Allowances

Compared with someone on 1257L, you pay tax on an extra £2,900 of income across the year. At 20%, that is around £580 more per year, or roughly £48 a month. If any of the extra falls into the 40% band, the annual gap can reach £1,160. These figures cover income tax only. National Insurance is a separate deduction (currently 8% on weekly earnings between £242 and £967, and 2% above) and is not affected by your tax code.8GOV.UK. National Insurance Rates and Categories

Scottish taxpayers on S967L pay the same allowance-based mechanism but at Scottish rates, which use six bands from a 19% starter rate up to a 48% top rate.3gov.scot. Scottish Income Tax 2025 to 2026: Factsheet The exact monthly impact will differ depending on which band your earnings fall into.

If You See W1, M1 or X After the Code

967L followed by W1, M1, or X is an emergency code. It usually appears when you start a new job without handing in a P45, so your employer does not yet have your full tax history. Under an emergency code, payroll calculates tax on that single pay period in isolation, ignoring what you have earned earlier in the year.9GOV.UK. Emergency Tax Codes W1 applies to weekly pay, M1 to monthly pay, and X to irregular pay dates. Emergency codes are temporary. Once HMRC has your employment details, they issue a corrected code and your employer recalculates your tax for the year, refunding any overpayment through your next pay packets.

How to Check Whether the Code Is Right

The quickest verification is HMRC’s “Check your Income Tax” online service, which shows your current code, the allowances and deductions behind it, and your estimated income for the year.10GOV.UK. Check Your Income Tax for the Current Year Sign in through your personal tax account and look for line items such as “company car benefit: £2,100” or “underpaid tax from 2024-25: £800.” If any of those figures look wrong, that is what you need to challenge.

Gather your paperwork before you contact HMRC. Your P60 summarises your total pay and tax deducted for the previous tax year.11GOV.UK. Your P45, P60 and P11D Form: P60 If the code was adjusted for workplace benefits, your employer should have issued a P11D listing the taxable value of each one.12GOV.UK. Expenses and Benefits for Employers: Reporting and Paying Your recent payslips will show the code currently in use. If a benefit ended months ago but is still dragging your code down, those documents will not match what HMRC has on file.

Getting the Code Changed

Once you have spotted an error, the fastest fix is through the same online service. Update your employment details or estimated income with the corrected figures. The online route is considerably quicker than the phone helpline during busy periods.10GOV.UK. Check Your Income Tax for the Current Year

When HMRC processes the change, it sends an electronic P6 notice to your employer’s payroll department with the new code and the effective date.13GOV.UK. Understanding Your Employees’ Tax Codes The new code should appear on your payslip within one or two pay cycles. If the old code caused you to overpay earlier in the tax year, payroll will recalculate your year-to-date position and refund the excess through your next pay.

Some adjustments are correct even if they feel unfair. A company car worth £2,900 in taxable benefit produces a 967L code doing exactly what it is meant to do. The time to act is when the figures behind the code do not match your real circumstances: a benefit you no longer receive, an underpayment already settled, or an income estimate that is simply wrong.

What Happens If You Leave a Wrong Code in Place

If your code is too low and you overpay tax all year, you will eventually get the money back through a P800 tax calculation, but that could mean waiting until after the tax year ends. You are effectively lending HMRC the money interest-free for months.

The reverse is worse. If your code is too high and not enough tax comes out, you will face an underpayment bill. HMRC charges late payment interest at the Bank of England base rate plus four percentage points, and careless errors can attract penalties on top of the tax owed.14GOV.UK. Penalties: An Overview for Agents and Advisers Most 967L problems are innocent, but catching a code error during the tax year is always easier than sorting it out after the year closes.

Why 967L Is Becoming More Common

The £12,570 Personal Allowance has been frozen since 2021/22 and is set to stay at that level until at least April 2028, with a further extension announced through April 2031.15House of Commons Library. Fiscal Drag: An Explainer Because the standard allowance is not rising with inflation, any fixed-value deduction takes a proportionally larger bite each year. A company car benefit that once dropped a code to 1000L can now drop it to 967L if its taxable value has crept up while the allowance stayed flat. That squeeze will not ease until the freeze lifts.
