The 952L tax code tells your employer or pension provider to give you £9,520 of tax-free pay across the year before deducting income tax. The standard personal allowance for 2026/27 is £12,570, which matches the more common 1257L code, so a 952L code means HMRC has reduced your tax-free amount by £3,050.1House of Commons Library. Direct Taxes: Rates and Allowances That reduction usually reflects taxable workplace benefits, an underpayment HMRC is collecting from an earlier year, or untaxed income being accounted for through payroll.
Reading the Code
A PAYE tax code combines a number with one or more letters. The number is your annual tax-free allowance with the final digit removed, so 952 means £9,520. Your employer uses that figure to split your pay each period into a tax-free portion and a taxable portion.2GOV.UK. Tax Codes – What Your Tax Code Means
The letter L confirms you qualify for the standard personal allowance. It doesn’t mean you’re receiving the full £12,570; it means HMRC started from the standard allowance and made deductions to reach your final figure.3HM Revenue & Customs. PAYE Manual – PAYE11075
Why Your Allowance Has Been Reduced by £3,050
The gap between 1257L and 952L works out to £3,050 of allowance that HMRC has taken back. Several situations can produce that reduction, and more than one may apply at once.
Benefits in Kind
Company perks like a car, private medical insurance, or an interest-free loan count as taxable income even though no cash reaches your bank account. Instead of billing you separately, HMRC lowers your personal allowance by the taxable value of those benefits so the extra tax is collected through each payslip. Your employer reports the values on a P11D, and those figures drive how far your code drops below 1257L.4GOV.UK. Your P45, P60 and P11D Form – P11D
A company car is the most common cause. Its taxable value depends on list price and CO2 emissions. For 2026/27, a fully electric vehicle attracts a benefit-in-kind rate of just 4%, while petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid cars sit much higher. A £30,000 car at a 10% rate adds £3,000 to your taxable income, which on its own nearly explains a code of 952L.5GOV.UK. Tax on Company Benefits – Tax on Company Cars
Underpaid Tax From an Earlier Year
If HMRC finds you didn’t pay enough tax in a previous year, they usually recover it by cutting your current code rather than asking for a lump sum. This is often the most confusing reason for a lower allowance because it has nothing to do with what you’re earning now. HMRC can collect underpayments of up to £3,000 this way, provided you earn enough above your allowance to absorb the deduction.6GOV.UK. Tax Overpayments and Underpayments – If You Owe Tax Anything above £3,000 gets billed separately.
Untaxed Income
Income from sources that don’t deduct tax at source, such as rental profits, casual earnings, or certain state benefits, can also trigger a reduction. HMRC estimates the untaxed amount and shrinks your allowance so the right total tax is collected through your main employment.
Marriage Allowance Combined With Other Adjustments
Transferring 10% of your personal allowance to a spouse or civil partner through Marriage Allowance reduces your own allowance by £1,260 and normally produces a code of 1131N.7GOV.UK. Marriage Allowance If a small benefit or underpayment sits alongside it, the combined effect can bring the code down to around 952L. The L suffix appears rather than N when HMRC treats the entitlement and the transfer as separate elements in the calculation.
The High Income Taper
If your adjusted net income exceeds £100,000, your personal allowance falls by £1 for every £2 earned above that threshold, and disappears entirely at £125,140.8GOV.UK. Personal Allowances: Adjusted Net Income A 952L code from the taper alone would correspond to adjusted net income of roughly £106,100. This is worth checking, because the taper creates an effective 60% marginal rate between £100,000 and £125,140, and pension contributions or Gift Aid donations can bring your adjusted net income back down and restore some of the lost allowance.
What 952L Costs You Compared to 1257L
The impact is easy to quantify. With £3,050 less tax-free income, you pay an extra £610 a year at the 20% basic rate, or roughly £51 a month.9GOV.UK. Income Tax Rates and Allowances for Current and Previous Tax Years If your income falls in the higher-rate band at 40%, the same £3,050 reduction costs £1,220 a year. A wrong code in either direction changes your take-home pay noticeably, which is why the underlying figures are worth checking.
Checking Whether 952L Is Correct
You need up to three documents. Your P60 shows total pay and total tax deducted for the year and gives you a baseline.10GOV.UK. Your P45, P60 and P11D Form – P60
If you changed jobs during the year, your P45 tracks how pay and tax carried across between employers.11GOV.UK. Your P45, P60 and P11D Form A missing or delayed P45 often triggers an emergency code, which can then cascade into a wrong code the year after.
The most important document for a 952L code is the P11D. It lists every benefit your employer reported to HMRC and the taxable value of each one. Read it carefully. If your employer overstated the value of a company car or included a perk you no longer receive, that error feeds straight through to your tax code.12GOV.UK. Expenses and Benefits for Employers: Reporting and Paying
The arithmetic is simple. Take £12,570, subtract the total value of the benefits shown on your P11D, then subtract any underpayment being collected. If the result is £9,520, the 952L code is right. If it isn’t, contact HMRC.
Getting the Code Changed
The fastest route is your Personal Tax Account on GOV.UK. Once signed in, open the income tax section to see your current code, the allowances and deductions HMRC used, and the option to report changes such as new benefits, removed perks, or a different income estimate.13GOV.UK. Check Your Income Tax for the Current Year The service isn’t available if Self Assessment is your only route for paying income tax.
You can also call HMRC’s income tax helpline on 0300 200 3300, Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. Phone is slower but useful when your situation is complicated or doesn’t fit the online form.
Either way, HMRC will issue an updated coding notice explaining the new tax-free amount and the reasoning behind it, and will notify your employer electronically so the corrected code appears on your next payslip.14GOV.UK. Tax Codes
If the Wrong Code Has Been Running All Year
If a wrong code isn’t caught until after 5 April, HMRC’s reconciliation eventually picks it up. Between June and the following March, they issue a P800 tax calculation letter to anyone who has overpaid or underpaid.15GOV.UK. Tax Overpayments and Underpayments
An overpayment can usually be reclaimed through your Personal Tax Account, paid straight to your bank account. An underpayment under £3,000 is typically collected by adjusting the following year’s tax code rather than by lump-sum payment.6GOV.UK. Tax Overpayments and Underpayments – If You Owe Tax Amounts over £3,000 must be paid separately.
P800 letters can arrive up to ten months after the tax year ends, so if you already suspect your code is wrong, act now rather than waiting for the automatic process. Fixing it mid-year through your Personal Tax Account means the remaining payslips are corrected straight away, instead of carrying the error to the end of the year and then waiting months more for reconciliation.
