The 858L tax code means HMRC has set your tax-free Personal Allowance at £8,580 for the year, which is £3,990 less than the standard £12,570. The 858 is your allowance in hundreds of pounds, and the L confirms you get the standard Personal Allowance category. Something has reduced your allowance, most often a taxable workplace benefit, tax you underpaid in a previous year, or untaxed income HMRC is collecting through PAYE.
What the Number and Letter Actually Mean
Every PAYE code has two parts. Multiply the number by ten to get your annual tax-free pay: 858 × 10 = £8,580. Your employer or pension provider uses that figure to work out how much of each payslip to tax.
The L suffix simply says you qualify for the standard Personal Allowance, which HMRC has frozen at £12,570 under legislation now extending the freeze through April 2031.1GOV.UK. Income Tax: Maintaining the Personal Allowance and the Basic Rate Limit If the full allowance is £12,570 and yours is £8,580, then £3,990 has been taken off somewhere. Finding that £3,990 is the whole question.
Why Your Allowance Has Been Cut by £3,990
Taxable Workplace Benefits
This is the most common cause. A company car, private medical insurance, or an interest-free loan counts as income, but your employer usually can’t deduct tax from a benefit at source, so HMRC recovers the tax by shrinking your Personal Allowance instead.2GOV.UK. Expenses and Benefits for Employers If your benefits are valued at £3,990 a year, that’s the £3,990 missing from your code.
Your employer reports each benefit to HMRC on a P11D after the tax year ends, and you can ask for a copy showing the value put on each one.3GOV.UK. Your P45, P60 and P11D Form – P11D Errors often start here. Handed back the company car in September? If HMRC still has it coded for the full year, your allowance is too low.
Underpaid Tax From a Previous Year
When you’ve underpaid, HMRC can spread the repayment across the following year’s paychecks by reducing your allowance, rather than asking for a lump sum. Up to £3,000 of underpaid tax can be collected this way, provided you filed your Self Assessment on time and meet certain income conditions.4GOV.UK. Pay Your Self Assessment Tax Bill – Through Your Tax Code Anything above £3,000 is collected separately.
Untaxed Income
Savings interest, rental income, or casual self-employment that isn’t taxed at source can also drag your code down. HMRC estimates the tax due on that income and takes it gradually out of your employment pay by cutting the allowance.
Many 858L codes come from a mix. A company car worth £2,500 in taxable benefit plus £1,490 of underpaid tax from last year lands exactly on the £3,990 reduction that turns 1257L into 858L.
What 858L Costs You Each Month
PAYE is cumulative: your employer splits the annual tax-free amount evenly across pay periods.5GOV.UK. PAYE Manual – Codes: How They Are Used and Calculated With 858L and monthly pay, you get £715 tax-free each month (£8,580 ÷ 12). Anything above that in the month is taxable.
On the standard 1257L, that monthly tax-free figure is £1,047.50. So 858L leaves you with £332.50 more taxable income each month. At the 20% basic rate that’s roughly £66.50 extra tax a month, or about £798 across the year. If any of your income falls into the higher-rate band, the cost climbs faster.
For 2026-27 the bands work like this on income above your allowance:6House of Commons Library. Direct Taxes: Rates and Allowances for 2026/27
- Basic rate 20% on the first £37,700 of taxable income (up to £50,270 total earnings)
- Higher rate 40% between £50,271 and £125,140
- Additional rate 45% above £125,140
If you live in Scotland, rates are set by the Scottish Parliament, with six bands from 19% to 48%, and your code will show an S prefix (S858L). National Insurance is calculated separately from your tax code and isn’t affected by 858L.7GOV.UK. National Insurance Rates and Categories
How to Check Whether 858L Is Right for You
Start with your most recent payslip: it shows the code your employer is using and your year-to-date figures. Then pull two documents. Your P60 summarises last year’s pay and tax.8GOV.UK. Your P45, P60 and P11D Form – P60 Your P11D lists the value of any workplace benefits, and this is where most coding errors begin.
The document that actually shows how 858L was built is the P2 Notice of Coding, which HMRC sends whenever your code is set or changed. It lists the £12,570 Personal Allowance, then itemises every deduction against it: the taxable value of the company car, medical cover, an amount of underpaid tax being recovered, and so on.9GOV.UK. PAYE Manual – P2 Notice of Coding If any item on the P2 doesn’t match what’s actually happening in your life, your code is wrong.
The fastest way to see the same information is HMRC’s “Check your Income Tax” online service, which lets you view your code, see the allowances and deductions behind it, and report changes.10GOV.UK. Check Your Income Tax for the Current Year You’ll need a Government Gateway account and, first time round, photo ID to verify who you are.
How to Get the Code Changed
If something’s wrong, the same online service lets you tell HMRC: a benefit that’s ended, a second income that’s stopped, an underpayment already settled. You can also report changes by phone on HMRC’s income tax helpline.11GOV.UK. Tax Codes – If You Think Your Tax Code Is Wrong
Once HMRC processes the change, they send the new code to your employer electronically, aiming to do so within 15 working days.11GOV.UK. Tax Codes – If You Think Your Tax Code Is Wrong Because PAYE is cumulative, payroll then recalculates your tax across the whole year to date. If you were overtaxed under 858L, the refund usually comes back through your next paycheck automatically.
HMRC won’t necessarily catch mistakes on its own. If a benefit ended mid-year or you’ve cleared an underpayment, nothing changes until you or your employer tells them. And there’s a hard limit: you have four years from the end of the tax year in which you overpaid to claim a refund. After that, the year closes for good.
Other Codes You Might See on Your Payslip
If your code changes or 858L doesn’t appear where you expect it, these are the ones most likely to turn up:
- 1257L is the standard code, giving the full £12,570 allowance to someone with one job and no benefits or underpaid tax.12GOV.UK. Tax Codes – What Your Tax Code Means
- A K code is issued when deductions exceed your entire Personal Allowance, so instead of reducing your tax-free amount it adds to your taxable income. Your employer can never deduct more than half your pre-tax pay under a K code.13GOV.UK. Tax Codes – If You Have a K in Your Tax Code
- BR taxes all income from that job at 20% with no allowance applied, typically used for a second job or pension.
- 0T gives no Personal Allowance but applies the full band structure, so higher and additional rates kick in once income crosses those thresholds.
- M or N shows a Marriage Allowance transfer: M means you’ve received £1,260 of your spouse’s or civil partner’s allowance, reducing your tax by up to £252; N means you’ve transferred £1,260 of yours to them.14GOV.UK. Marriage Allowance
- A W1 or M1 suffix marks an emergency, non-cumulative code. Each pay period is taxed in isolation, ignoring what you’ve earned so far in the year, which often leads to overpaid tax that needs sorting out later.5GOV.UK. PAYE Manual – Codes: How They Are Used and Calculated
