An 830L tax code means HMRC has set your tax-free personal allowance at £8,300 for the year, which is £4,270 below the standard £12,570 allowance that comes with the usual 1257L code.1GOV.UK. Income Tax Rates and Allowances for Current and Previous Tax Years You have it because HMRC has applied roughly £4,270 in adjustments to your account, usually to collect tax on something outside your salary, such as a company benefit, a previous underpayment, or another source of income. The money is not lost, but a larger slice of your pay is being taxed each month, so it is worth knowing exactly why.
What the 830 and the L Actually Mean
The number in a tax code, multiplied by ten, is your annual tax-free allowance. So 830 equals £8,300. HMRC gets there by starting from the standard £12,570 personal allowance and subtracting adjustments that apply to you, then dropping the last digit.2GOV.UK. Tax Codes: What Your Tax Code Means
The letter L means you are entitled to the standard personal allowance, just with reductions applied. It is the most common suffix and simply confirms you are not on a special category. Different letters tell a different story: M means you have received a Marriage Allowance transfer from your spouse, N means you have transferred yours to them, and K means your deductions exceed your allowance so taxable value is added to your income rather than subtracted from it.2GOV.UK. Tax Codes: What Your Tax Code Means
Why You Have an 830L Code
An 830L code reflects a specific £4,270 of adjustments on your record. More than one factor can stack together to reach that figure, and the personal tax account will show the exact breakdown. The common reasons are these.
Benefits in Kind From Your Employer
Taxable perks such as a company car, fuel for personal use, or private medical insurance count as income even though you never see the cash. Your employer reports their value to HMRC on a P11D form, and HMRC reduces your tax-free allowance by the same amount so the tax is collected through payroll.3GOV.UK. Your P45, P60 and P11D Form A company car alone can easily account for several thousand pounds of reduction, which is often enough on its own to move a code from 1257L down to around 830L.
Underpaid Tax From a Previous Year
When HMRC finds you underpaid in a prior year, they can collect the shortfall by lowering your current code rather than demanding a lump sum. This is called coding out. For most taxpayers HMRC can code out up to £3,000 this way; if your income is above £30,000, they may collect more than that through your code.4GOV.UK. PAYE Manual – PAYE12070 – Coding: Coding Deductions and Expenses: Underpayments Larger underpayments have to be settled through Self Assessment or direct payment.
State Pension Collected Through Another Source
The State Pension is taxable, but the Department for Work and Pensions pays it without deducting tax. If you also draw a workplace pension or a salary, HMRC lowers the code on that other income to collect the tax owed on the State Pension. Someone receiving around £4,270 a year in State Pension alongside another income source would see their allowance cut by that amount, landing on exactly an 830L code. The full new State Pension is over £11,500, so a code as high as 830L points to a partial State Pension or a mix of smaller adjustments rather than a full one.
High Income Child Benefit Charge
Since October 2025, HMRC can collect the High Income Child Benefit Charge through your PAYE code rather than requiring a Self Assessment return. If you or your partner earns above the threshold and receives Child Benefit, HMRC may reduce your allowance to recover the charge gradually from your pay. Depending on the amount, this can be a meaningful contributor to an 830L code.
Untaxed Income
Rental income, savings interest above your personal savings allowance, or other untaxed earnings can also reduce your code. HMRC estimates the amount for the year and lowers your allowance so the extra tax comes out of your main PAYE source.
Two Things 830L Is Not
A Marriage Allowance transfer to your partner reduces your allowance by £1,260 and changes your code letter from L to N,5UK Parliament. Income Tax Allowances for Married Couples6GOV.UK. What 830L Costs You Each Month
With an 830L code you pay tax on £4,270 more of your annual income than someone on 1257L. At the basic rate of 20%, that is around £854 a year, or roughly £71 a month.8GOV.UK. Income Tax Rates and Personal Allowances If part of that extra taxable income falls into the higher rate band at 40%, the tax on that portion doubles.
Your employer spreads the effect evenly across pay periods so take-home pay stays consistent month to month. The code does not mean you are being penalised; it means HMRC is collecting tax you owe through your regular pay rather than sending you a separate bill. The question worth asking is whether the reason behind the reduction is actually correct.
If Your Code Shows 830L W1 or 830L M1
A W1 (week 1) or M1 (month 1) marker after the code means your employer is calculating tax on each pay period in isolation instead of cumulatively across the year. Your full annual allowance is not being spread properly, and you may pay more tax than you should in the short term.
These emergency codes are temporary. HMRC uses them when payroll does not yet have enough information about your income, usually after a job change. Once HMRC sends the proper code, the cumulative calculation catches up and any overpayment is corrected in a later payslip.
How to Check and Correct an 830L Code
The fastest check is the “Check your Income Tax” service in your HMRC personal tax account.9GOV.UK. Check Your Income Tax for the Current Year It shows every item HMRC used to build your code, including benefits in kind, estimated untaxed income, and any underpayments being collected. If a figure looks wrong, you can update your details through the same service.10GOV.UK. Tax Codes: If You Think Your Tax Code Is Wrong
Have your National Insurance number, a recent payslip, and last year’s P60 ready. If your code was reduced because of benefits in kind, check the figures against your P11D to make sure the reported values match what you actually receive.3GOV.UK. Your P45, P60 and P11D Form If you cannot use the online service, you can report the discrepancy by phone through the HMRC income tax helpline. HMRC then issues a P2 coding notice confirming the new code and sends it electronically to your employer, normally taking effect from the next available pay period.
Getting a Refund If 830L Was Wrong
If the code was incorrect and you overpaid, HMRC works out the difference and instructs your employer or pension provider to refund it through your pay, usually in the same period your corrected code takes effect.11GOV.UK. Tax Codes: If Youve Paid Too Much or Too Little Tax If the mistake is not caught until after the tax year ends, HMRC reviews income data from employers and pension providers and sends a P800 calculation letter explaining how to claim.
Refunds are generally automatic once the code is corrected mid-year. Coding errors are most likely at transition points: changing jobs, gaining or losing a benefit, or starting a pension. Check your code around those moments, and the sooner you spot a problem, the smaller the hit to your monthly budget.
