800L Tax Code: Missing Allowance, Checks, and Corrections

An 800L tax code means HMRC has told your employer or pension provider to give you £8,000 of tax-free pay this year instead of the standard £12,570 personal allowance. Something worth £4,570 has been taken off your allowance, and in most cases it’s a taxable workplace benefit, tax owed from a previous year, or a marriage allowance transfer. The L on the end simply confirms you get a version of the standard allowance.

What the Number and Letter Actually Mean

Every PAYE code has a number and a letter. The number is your tax-free amount with the last digit removed, so 800 stands for £8,000. Your employer spreads that figure evenly across your pay periods and only starts deducting income tax once your earnings pass it.

The L tells the payroll system you’re entitled to the standard personal allowance.1GOV.UK. What Your Tax Code Means Other suffixes mean different things entirely: BR taxes every pound at basic rate with no allowance, D0 applies higher rate throughout, and a K code means your deductions exceed your allowance so extra tax gets collected. An L on your code is the ordinary case, just with a reduced number in front of it.

Once you earn above the £8,000 threshold, the basic rate of 20% applies. Higher rate at 40% kicks in when total income passes £45,700 (the £8,000 plus the £37,700 basic rate band), and the additional 45% rate applies above £125,140.2GOV.UK. Income Tax Rates and Personal Allowances

Why £4,570 Is Missing From Your Allowance

The standard personal allowance is £12,570 and is frozen at that level, with legislation extending the freeze through April 2031.3GOV.UK. Income Tax: Maintaining the Personal Allowance and the Basic Rate Limit An 800L code means £4,570 has been knocked off. A few things commonly cause that, and more than one may be at work at the same time.

Taxable Benefits From Your Employer

Perks with a cash value are treated as income. A company car is the classic example: HMRC calculates the taxable benefit from the car’s list price and its CO2 emissions, applying a percentage that ranges from 4% for fully electric vehicles up to 37% for the highest-emission petrol and diesel models.4GOV.UK. Work Out the Appropriate Percentage for Company Car Benefits (480: Appendix 2) Whatever figure that produces is subtracted from your £12,570 allowance.

Private medical insurance, interest-free loans, and employer-provided fuel for private use in a company car are treated the same way. The car fuel benefit is worked out by applying the CO2 percentage to a fixed multiplier of £29,200 for the 2026/27 tax year.5GOV.UK. Travel: Mileage and Fuel Rates and Allowances Combine a modest car benefit with a fuel benefit and reaching a £4,570 reduction is entirely realistic.

Underpaid Tax From a Previous Year

If HMRC finds you didn’t pay enough tax in an earlier year, they usually collect the shortfall by shrinking your code rather than sending you a bill. This route is only available when the underpayment is below £3,000; anything larger has to be paid separately.6GOV.UK. PAYE12070 – Coding: Codes: Underpayments A safeguard also limits the code adjustment to no more than 50% of your earnings, so if the collection would breach that, HMRC will spread it over two or three years.

Marriage Allowance Transfer

Transferring 10% of your personal allowance to a spouse or civil partner through Marriage Allowance drops your own allowance by £1,260, from £12,570 to £11,310.7GOV.UK. Marriage Allowance: How It Works That alone would give you an 1131L code, not 800L. But paired with a smaller taxable benefit or a modest underpayment, the combined deductions can bring the number down to exactly £8,000.

State Pension Coded Into Your Allowance

The State Pension is taxable but paid without any tax deducted. If you also have a workplace or private pension, HMRC reduces the code on that second pension to cover the tax due on the State Pension. Someone receiving a State Pension of around £11,500 has only about £1,070 of allowance left to set against other pension income.8GOV.UK. Tax When You Get a Pension: How Your Tax Is Paid A pensioner with a smaller State Pension plus a modest taxable benefit could easily land on 800L for their private pension. The same logic applies if you’re still working while drawing the State Pension.

Scottish and Welsh Taxpayersh2>

If you live in Scotland, the code will read S800L. The number and letter mean the same thing, but Scotland has its own rate bands, so the tax deducted on each pound above your allowance differs from the rest of the UK.9GOV.UK. Income Tax in Scotland: Current Rates Welsh taxpayers see a C prefix. A plain 800L with no prefix means HMRC treats you as an English or Northern Irish taxpayer.

How to Check Whether the Code Is Right

The single most useful document is your P2 coding notice. HMRC sends one whenever your code changes, and it shows exactly which allowances and deductions produced the number. If you’ve lost the letter, the same breakdown appears in your Personal Tax Account online.10GOV.UK. Check Your Income Tax for the Current Year Read each line. If HMRC is still subtracting £3,000 for a company car you returned six months ago, you’ve found the problem.

Your P60 confirms total pay and tax deducted for the previous tax year.11GOV.UK. Your P45, P60 and P11D Form – Section: P60 If HMRC has included an underpayment from last year in this year’s code, compare the amount on your P2 with the shortfall on your P60 or on any P800 calculation letter. Those figures should match.

For benefits in kind, your employer reports the cash value on a P11D. Ask for a copy showing exactly what was reported and what each benefit was valued at.12GOV.UK. Your P45, P60 and P11D Form – Section: P11D If the company car figure on the P11D doesn’t match the deduction on your P2, one of them is wrong.

How to Get the Code Changed

The quickest route is the “Check your Income Tax” service inside your Personal Tax Account on GOV.UK. You’ll need Government Gateway sign-in details. From there you can update income estimates, tell HMRC a benefit has changed, or report that you’ve left a job.13GOV.UK. Personal Tax Account: Sign In or Set Up

Prefer to talk to someone? The HMRC Income Tax helpline is 0300 200 3300, Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, or +44 135 535 9022 from outside the UK.14GOV.UK. Income Tax: Enquiries Have your National Insurance number and a recent payslip ready.

Once HMRC agrees to a change, they notify you and your employer within 15 working days. If you’re paid monthly, the new code should appear on your next or the following payslip; if you’re paid weekly, expect it by your third payslip.15GOV.UK. Tax Codes: If You Think Your Tax Code Is Wrong

If You’ve Overpaid Tax

If the wrong code left you paying too much, you don’t need to do anything dramatic. When HMRC issues the corrected code, they calculate the difference and tell your employer or pension provider to refund the overpayment through your pay.16GOV.UK. Tax Codes: If You’ve Paid Too Much or Too Little Tax It usually happens automatically alongside the new code.

If the overcharge isn’t caught during the tax year, HMRC reviews the figures after 5 April using data from your employer and pension provider. They’ll write to you with a calculation, and if you’ve overpaid, the letter explains how to claim the refund. Don’t ignore those P800 letters. A lot of refunds sit unclaimed because the envelope looks like junk mail.
