A 57T tax code means your employer is treating just £570 of your annual pay as tax-free, instead of the standard £12,570 Personal Allowance.1GOV.UK. Income Tax Rates and Personal Allowances The “T” tells your employer the code involves extra calculations that HMRC wants to review manually before any change is made.2GOV.UK. What Your Tax Code Means In almost every case, seeing 57T points to one thing: your income is close to £124,000 and your Personal Allowance has been tapered away.
What the 57 and the T Each Mean
Every PAYE code follows the same rule. Take the number, multiply by ten, and you have your tax-free allowance for the year. So 57 gives you £570. The most common code, 1257L, gives £12,570. Spread evenly across the year, a 57T code shelters about £47.50 a month, or roughly £10.96 a week, from tax. Everything above that is taxed at whatever band applies to your income.1GOV.UK. Income Tax Rates and Personal Allowances
The letter matters just as much as the number. An L suffix means the standard allowance with no special treatment, and it updates automatically when HMRC refreshes codes at the start of each tax year. A T suffix does not. HMRC’s internal guidance uses T to flag a code for manual review, so your allowance stays frozen at 57 until a tax officer looks at your file and issues a new code.3GOV.UK. PAYE Manual – PAYE11075 – How They Are Used and Calculated: Suffix Codes GOV.UK puts it plainly: “Your tax code includes other calculations to work out your Personal Allowance.”2GOV.UK. What Your Tax Code Means
Why You Have a 57T Code
Personal Allowance Tapering
This is far and away the most common reason. Once your adjusted net income passes £100,000, your Personal Allowance drops by £1 for every £2 above the threshold, and it disappears entirely at £125,140.4GOV.UK. Income Tax Rates and Personal Allowances – Section: If You Earn More Than 100,000 A 57T code lines up with an income of around £124,000. The arithmetic: the standard £12,570 allowance minus £570 leaves a reduction of £12,000, and because the taper works at 2-to-1, that puts your income roughly £24,000 above the £100,000 threshold.
The £12,570 Personal Allowance has been frozen since the 2021/22 tax year and is legislated to stay there through 2027/28.5GOV.UK. Income Tax Personal Allowance and the Basic Rate Limit From 6 April 2026 to 5 April 2028 As wages rise against a frozen threshold, more people are being drawn into the taper, which is why codes like 57T are showing up more often.
Multiple Income Sources
If you have more than one job, or you draw both employment and pension income, HMRC splits your allowance across the sources. One source, usually your main job, gets most of the allowance; a second job or pension gets a small remainder. When the split produces an unusual figure that needs manual oversight, the secondary source can be coded 57T.
Benefits in Kind and Untaxed Income
Company benefits such as a car or private medical insurance, along with untaxed interest or dividends, can eat into your allowance. HMRC reduces your tax-free amount to collect the extra tax through PAYE instead of asking for a lump sum later. If those adjustments bring what’s left of your allowance down to £570 and involve calculations HMRC wants to review, you’ll see the T suffix.
57T Is Not an Emergency Code
Worth ruling out early: 57T is not an emergency tax code. Emergency codes end in W1, M1, or X, and they mean your employer is taxing each pay period in isolation rather than spreading your allowance across the year. Those often appear when you start a new job without a P45 and resolve once HMRC sends the correct code.6GOV.UK. Emergency Tax Codes A plain 57T is a deliberate code, not a placeholder, so it won’t fix itself.
How to Check Whether 57T Is Right
The quickest check is the GOV.UK “Check your Income Tax for the current year” service. Sign in with your Government Gateway login and you’ll see exactly how HMRC built your code: the starting allowance, every reduction for benefits or untaxed income, and any transfers. The same service lets you update your income details and tell HMRC about changes.7GOV.UK. Check Your Income Tax for the Current Year
Before you sign in, pull together a few things:
- Your most recent P60, which shows total pay and tax deducted for the previous tax year.8GOV.UK. Your P45, P60 and P11D Form: P60
- Recent payslips.
- Records of any company benefits (car, medical, etc.).
- Details of savings interest and dividend income. For 2025/26, the dividend allowance is £500, and the Personal Savings Allowance is £1,000 for basic-rate taxpayers or £500 for higher-rate taxpayers.
The HMRC app also displays your code and estimated income, but you can’t change your code inside the app. For that, use the full online service or call.
How to Get 57T Corrected
If the online breakdown shows figures that don’t match your actual income or benefits, update them through the same “Check your Income Tax” service. HMRC reviews the new information against their payroll records and, if it checks out, issues a new code.

Once HMRC accepts the change, they send you a P2 Notice of Coding. It breaks down every part of the new code: your Personal Allowance, any reductions for benefits or untaxed income, and the tax bands that will apply.10GOV.UK. PAYE Manual – PAYE11030 – How They Are Used and Calculated: P2 Notice of Coding Read it. This is where you catch any remaining errors before your employer starts running payroll on the new code. HMRC sends the code to your employer electronically. Monthly-paid staff usually see the change on the next or the following payday; weekly-paid staff should see it by their third pay.11GOV.UK. Tax Codes: If Youve Paid Too Much or Too Little Tax
If You’ve Overpaid or Underpaid
Overpaid
If 57T was wrong and your real allowance should have been higher, you’ve been overtaxed. Once the corrected code reaches your employer, HMRC instructs them to refund the excess through your pay. You don’t usually need to chase a separate refund; the adjustment happens automatically through PAYE.11GOV.UK. Tax Codes: If Youve Paid Too Much or Too Little Tax If the overpayment relates to an earlier tax year, HMRC may send a P800 tax calculation or a Simple Assessment letter, and any refund comes directly from HMRC.
Underpaid
It can run the other way. If your income was actually higher than the estimate HMRC used when they set 57T, you may owe more. For underpayments below £3,000, HMRC usually collects the shortfall by reducing your Personal Allowance in the next tax year, spreading the bill across future payslips rather than demanding a lump sum. HMRC won’t use this method if the extra deductions would exceed 50% of your wages. Above that £3,000 threshold, or if your income is above £30,000, HMRC may collect a larger share through your code.
Interest on Unpaid Tax
Underpaid tax accrues late payment interest. As of January 2026, the rate is 7.75%, calculated as the Bank of England base rate plus 4%.12GOV.UK. HMRC Interest Rates for Late and Early Payments Interest runs from the date the tax was originally due, so a coding error left unnoticed for a year or more can add a meaningful sum on top of the tax itself.
If a corrected code turns up a debt you can’t clear in one go, HMRC may agree a payment plan letting you settle in instalments. Whether they agree depends on what they consider affordable in your circumstances. Without an arrangement, HMRC can require the full amount.13GOV.UK. If You Cannot Pay Your Tax Bill on Time
