The 1286L tax code tells your employer or pension provider to let you earn £12,860 in the tax year before deducting any income tax. That is £290 above the standard personal allowance of £12,570, and the extra reflects work-related expenses HMRC has folded into your code.1GOV.UK. Tax Codes – What Your Tax Code Means
How the Number and Letter Break Down
A PAYE code has two parts. The number is your annual tax-free income with the last digit dropped, so 1286 means £12,860.1GOV.UK. Tax Codes – What Your Tax Code Means Your employer splits that figure evenly across your pay periods. On a monthly salary, roughly £1,072 of each paycheck comes to you before tax; on weekly wages, about £247.
The L confirms you get the standard personal allowance with no unusual restrictions. It is the most common suffix in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, and it signals to payroll that whatever adjustments apply are already built into the number itself.1GOV.UK. Tax Codes – What Your Tax Code Means
Where the Extra £290 Comes From
The standard personal allowance has been £12,570 since April 2021, and legislation extends that freeze through April 2031.2GOV.UK. Income Tax: Maintaining the Personal Allowance and the Basic Rate Limit A plain 1257L code reflects that £12,570 with nothing added.1GOV.UK. Tax Codes – What Your Tax Code Means To reach 1286L, HMRC has added £290 of approved deductions on top. Two sources account for most cases.
Flat-Rate Job Expenses
Some occupations have set annual amounts employees can claim for maintaining uniforms, work clothing, or specialist tools. HMRC publishes the figures by trade. A joiner or carpenter gets £140 a year. Nurses and most healthcare staff get £125. Ambulance workers on active service get £185. If your job is not listed, the default rate is £60.3GOV.UK. Check How Much Tax Relief You Can Claim for Uniforms, Work Clothing and Tools Once HMRC approves the claim, they add the flat rate to your personal allowance and issue a new code.
Professional Subscription Fees
If your job requires membership in an approved professional body, and you pay the annual subscription yourself, the fee qualifies for tax relief. HMRC keeps a register called “List 3” of every approved organisation, and only fees paid to a body on that list can be claimed.4GOV.UK. List of Approved Professional Organisations and Learned Societies
The two reliefs stack. A healthcare worker claiming the £125 uniform flat rate plus a £165 professional subscription would see exactly £290 added to the standard allowance, producing 1286L.
Both reliefs rest on Section 336 of the Income Tax (Earnings and Pensions) Act 2003, which allows deductions for expenses incurred wholly, exclusively, and necessarily in performing your job.5Legislation.gov.uk. Income Tax (Earnings and Pensions) Act 2003 – Section 336 “Necessarily” is the tight word: the job itself has to require the expense, not simply benefit from it.
Not a Marriage Allowance Code
Marriage Allowance lets a lower-earning spouse transfer £1,260 of their personal allowance to their partner, but it never produces an L suffix. The receiving spouse gets an M and the giving spouse gets an N.6GOV.UK. Marriage Allowance – How to Apply If your code ends in L, no spousal transfer is in the calculation. The £290 in 1286L is entirely work-expense relief.
Checking and Correcting the Code
The quickest way to verify a 1286L code is HMRC’s “Check your Income Tax” service on GOV.UK, or the same features in the HMRC app. You can see your current code and personal allowance, review the income HMRC has estimated from your jobs and pensions, and update employer or pension details.7GOV.UK. Check Your Income Tax for the Current Year
If a flat-rate expense is missing, or an old employer is still listed, you can submit the correction through the service. HMRC then sends a revised code to your employer as a P6 coding notice, and the employer is expected to apply it before your next payday.8GOV.UK. Understanding Your Employees Tax Codes – Changes
One limit: if Self Assessment is your only route for paying income tax, the online service will not show your PAYE code, and you need to call the HMRC Income Tax helpline instead.7GOV.UK. Check Your Income Tax for the Current Year
It is worth checking the code even when it looks reasonable. The £290 built into 1286L may reflect a claim from a previous job or industry that no longer applies to you, in which case leaving it in place risks an underpayment later.
If the Code Turns Out to Have Been Wrong
After the tax year ends on 5 April, HMRC reviews PAYE records and sends a tax calculation letter, called a P800, or a Simple Assessment to anyone whose account does not balance. These go out between June and the following March.9GOV.UK. Tax Overpayments and Underpayments
If you overpaid, the P800 explains how to claim the refund, usually through your Personal Tax Account. If you underpaid by less than £3,000, HMRC will normally collect it by adjusting next year’s tax code, spreading the repayment across future paychecks. Those deductions cannot take more than half your wages in any pay period.10GOV.UK. Pay Your Self Assessment Tax Bill – Through Your Tax Code Underpayments above £3,000 generally have to be paid directly.
If you think you overpaid but no P800 has arrived, do not wait indefinitely. Contact HMRC or flag it through the online service yourself.9GOV.UK. Tax Overpayments and Underpayments
