126L Tax Code: Why It’s Low and How to Fix It

The 126L tax code means your employer is treating only £1,260 of your annual income as tax-free, rather than the standard £12,570 personal allowance most workers receive.1GOV.UK. Income Tax Personal Allowance and the Basic Rate Limit From 6 April 2026 to 5 April 2028 HMRC has knocked £11,310 off your allowance to collect tax on something else — usually a company benefit, tax owed from a previous year, or estimated untaxed income. A gap that large deserves a look, because if the deduction is wrong it can cost you thousands over the year.

What the Number and Letter Actually Mean

A PAYE code has two parts. The number is your tax-free allowance with the last digit removed, so 126 means £1,260 for the year. The L confirms you’re entitled to the standard personal allowance as a starting point.2GOV.UK. Tax Codes – What Your Tax Code Means That sounds contradictory when the tax-free figure is only £1,260, but the L refers to where HMRC began the calculation, not where it landed. HMRC started with £12,570 and then subtracted £11,310 worth of deductions to get to 126L.

What 126L Costs You Compared With 1257L

Payroll software spreads the £1,260 allowance evenly across your pay periods. Monthly pay gives you roughly £105 tax-free each month; weekly pay gives you around £24.23 a week. Everything above that is taxed.

Against the standard 1257L code, an extra £11,310 of your income now falls into taxable territory. At the 20% basic rate that’s about £2,262 in additional tax over the year, or roughly £188 a month.3GOV.UK. Income Tax Rates and Personal Allowances If any of your income sits in the 40% higher-rate band, the gap widens further. That’s why the code is worth verifying rather than accepting.

Why Your Allowance Was Reduced by £11,310

A deduction that size is rarely one single thing. It’s usually a combination of items HMRC wants to tax through your wages instead of billing you separately.

  • A company car, private medical insurance, or other benefits in kind. A company car alone can account for several thousand pounds depending on list price, fuel type, and CO2 emissions.4GOV.UK. Tax on Company Cars
  • Underpaid tax from a previous year. HMRC can collect shortfalls under £3,000 through your code, provided total deductions don’t exceed 50% of your PAYE income.5GOV.UK. Pay Your Self Assessment Tax Bill – Through Your Tax Code
  • The High Income Child Benefit Charge. Since October 2025, HMRC can collect this through your code rather than through Self Assessment.2GOV.UK. Tax Codes – What Your Tax Code Means
  • Estimated untaxed income such as savings interest, rental income, or part-time earnings.
  • Several moderate deductions stacked together — a £5,000 car benefit, £3,000 in underpaid tax, and £3,310 of estimated interest, for example.

Each item should appear separately on your PAYE coding notice, the P2 form HMRC sends when it sets or changes your code. If you can’t find a P2 whose deductions add up to £11,310, that’s a signal to dig further.6HM Revenue and Customs. PAYE Manual – Coding: Codes: How They Are Used and Calculated: P2 Notice of Coding

How to See the Breakdown

The fastest way is the Check your Income Tax service on GOV.UK. Once signed in you can see the current code, every deduction HMRC applied, and the employment and pension records it holds for you.7GOV.UK. Check Your Income Tax for the Current Year Read the deductions carefully. A company car you handed back last year, savings interest you no longer earn, or a duplicate employment record are common causes of an allowance that’s been cut too far.

Cross-check what you see against your latest payslip, your most recent P60 (your employer must issue one by 31 May), and a P11D if you receive benefits.8GOV.UK. Your P45, P60 and P11D Form

Fixing a Code That’s Wrong

You can correct outdated employment, income estimates, or benefit details through the same online service. If you’d rather call, HMRC’s income tax helpline can make the change over the phone — keep your National Insurance number handy.9GOV.UK. Tax Codes – If You Think Your Tax Code Is Wrong

One timing point. If you’ve just started a new job, wait 35 days before contacting HMRC about a code that looks wrong. Your employer’s payroll data needs time to reach HMRC, and calling earlier usually means calling again.9GOV.UK. Tax Codes – If You Think Your Tax Code Is Wrong

Once HMRC updates the code, it issues a fresh P2 and sends new payroll instructions to your employer. The corrected code usually shows on a payslip within one or two pay cycles.

What 126L W1 or 126L M1 Means

If your payslip shows 126L W1 (weekly pay) or 126L M1 (monthly pay), you’re on an emergency basis. Emergency codes tax each pay period in isolation rather than spreading your allowance across the year, which typically produces the wrong total tax.10GOV.UK. Tax Codes – Emergency Tax Codes It’s common after starting a new job without a P45 and usually clears itself once HMRC processes your details. If W1 or M1 sticks for more than a couple of months, contact HMRC. Any tax you’ve overpaid is refunded through an adjusted code or at year end.

Scottish and Welsh Versions

An S prefix (S126L) means Scottish rates apply; a C prefix (C126L) means Welsh rates apply. The prefix doesn’t change your £1,260 tax-free amount — it only tells payroll which set of income tax rates to use.2GOV.UK. Tax Codes – What Your Tax Code Means Scotland has extra bands that don’t exist elsewhere in the UK, so identical gross pay can produce a different tax bill. Checking and updating the code works the same way regardless of prefix.

If the Code Turns Out to Have Been Wrong All Year

After the tax year ends on 5 April, HMRC compares what you paid with what you owed and sends a P800 calculation letter if there’s a difference. Overpayments — a common outcome when a code like 126L was set too low — come with instructions for claiming a refund.11GOV.UK. Tax Overpayments and Underpayments

If you’ve underpaid, HMRC usually collects amounts under £3,000 by adjusting the following year’s code.5GOV.UK. Pay Your Simple Assessment Tax Bill Don’t ignore either letter — interest and penalties build on unpaid amounts. And if your current 126L is collecting an old underpayment, sorting out what caused it now stops the same problem returning next year.
