1237L Tax Code: Why It’s £200 Below Standard and How to Fix It

A 1237L tax code means HMRC has given you £12,370 of tax-free pay for the year instead of the standard £12,570 Personal Allowance. The L confirms you still qualify for the standard allowance; the 1237 shows it has been trimmed by £200. That reduction usually reflects a small taxable benefit from your job, a modest underpayment carried over from a previous year, or a bit of untaxed income HMRC is collecting through your payroll. At the basic rate, the code costs you roughly £40 more in tax over the year than the standard 1257L would.

What the Numbers and the Letter Actually Mean

Every PAYE code follows the same construction. HMRC works out your tax-free allowance, drops the final digit, and adds a letter. Multiply 1237 by 10 and you get £12,370, the amount your employer or pension provider will pay you before withholding any income tax. Everything above that gets taxed at the rate that applies to the band it falls into.1GOV.UK. Tax Codes

The letter L means you’re entitled to the standard Personal Allowance with no special transfers or restrictions attached.2GOV.UK. What Your Tax Code Means So a 1237L code isn’t a different type of allowance from 1257L. It’s the same allowance with a £200 deduction applied.

The Personal Allowance has been frozen at £12,570 since 2021/22, and the November 2025 Budget extended that freeze through April 2031.3UK Parliament. Fiscal Drag: An Explainer So 1257L will remain the baseline code for years, and 1237L will keep representing the same £200 shortfall unless your circumstances change.

Why HMRC Reduced Your Allowance by £200

A £200 cut doesn’t get applied at random. HMRC uses code adjustments to collect small amounts of tax it can’t easily gather any other way. The usual suspects are:

  • A taxable benefit from your employer. Something like private medical insurance or a small fuel allowance gets its cash value deducted from your tax-free amount. A benefit valued at £200 shifts a code from 1257L to 1237L.4GOV.UK. Tax on Company Benefits
  • A small underpayment from a previous tax year. Rather than send you a bill, HMRC recovers it by trimming this year’s allowance.
  • Untaxed income. A bit of savings interest above your allowance or income from a side job can trigger a code adjustment.
  • An error in how a previous claim, such as flat-rate job expenses for uniforms or tools, has been recorded.5GOV.UK. Check How Much Tax Relief You Can Claim for Uniforms, Work Clothing and Tools

What 1237L Costs You

The basic rate of income tax is 20%, applied to income between £12,571 and £50,270 for 2025/26 (and confirmed at the same level for 2026/27).7GOV.UK. Income Tax Rates and Personal Allowances Because 1237L starts taxing you £200 earlier than 1257L, you pay 20% on that extra £200. That’s £40 across the year, or a little over £3 a month on a monthly payslip.

It’s not a large sum. But if the reduction is based on outdated or incorrect information, there’s no reason to keep paying it, and no reason to keep paying it in future years either.

How to Check What’s Behind Your Code

Your payslip shows the code near the top. To see the working HMRC used to build it, sign in to the Check Your Income Tax service on GOV.UK. The tool displays your current code, every income source HMRC is tracking, and each item making up your allowance, so you can see exactly what the £200 deduction represents.8GOV.UK. Look closely at any benefit in kind listed in the breakdown. If your employer has started payrolling a benefit (taxing its value directly through your salary each month), HMRC should not also be reducing your tax code for the same benefit. Double-counting like that is one of the most common reasons for an incorrect code, and it means you’re paying tax on the same benefit twice.

Also worth comparing: your P60 from the end of last tax year, or the P45 from a job you recently left, both of which show the code that was in force then.10GOV.UK. Your P45, P60 and P11D Form: Why You Get Each Form A code that moved from 1257L to 1237L partway through the year usually points to a benefit or adjustment added in the meantime.

How to Get 1237L Changed

If the £200 deduction is wrong, or the reason for it no longer applies (a benefit has ended, for example), you can put that right through your Personal Tax Account on GOV.UK. If 1237L Has Been Wrong for a While

Where an incorrect 1237L code has left you overpaying tax, HMRC usually catches it at the end of the tax year and sends a P800 tax calculation letter setting out what you’re owed and how to claim it back.14GOV.UK. Tax Overpayments and Underpayments “Usually” matters here: small discrepancies sometimes go unnoticed and no P800 arrives. You can still claim a refund yourself, and the deadline is four years from the end of the tax year in which the overpayment happened. An overpayment during 2022/23 has to be claimed by 5 April 2027; after that the year closes.

Underpayments work the other way. If a code that was too generous meant you underpaid, HMRC collects the shortfall. For amounts typically under £3,000, they adjust the following year’s code to recover it gradually. Larger amounts may need a direct payment, and interest runs on underpaid tax from the date it was originally due.

A Note on Marriage Allowance

Marriage Allowance is worth ruling out if you’ve been trying to work out where the £200 came from. When one spouse or civil partner transfers £1,260 of their Personal Allowance to the other, the person transferring gets code letter N and the recipient gets letter M.15GOV.UK. Marriage Allowance A code that still ends in L, like 1237L, isn’t the result of a Marriage Allowance transfer. The reduction is coming from something else, and the P2 or the online Check Your Income Tax service will show what.
