1178L Tax Code: What It Means and Why Your Allowance Is Lower

The 1178L tax code tells your employer or pension provider to treat £11,780 of your pay as tax-free this year. That is £790 less than the standard personal allowance of £12,570, which produces the more common 1257L code.1GOV.UK. Income Tax Rates and Personal Allowances Something in your record has trimmed your allowance by that £790, and your PAYE coding notice (form P2) sets out exactly what.

Reading the Code

A PAYE tax code is a number followed by a letter. Multiply the number by ten to get your annual tax-free income: 1178 stands for £11,780. HMRC arrives at that figure by starting with your personal allowance, adding any reliefs you’re due, subtracting any untaxed income or taxable benefits, and dropping the final digit.2GOV.UK. The L on the end confirms you qualify for the standard personal allowance. Other letters describe other situations: M and N for marriage allowance transfers, K where deductions have wiped the allowance out entirely.2GOV.UK. Tax Codes – What Your Tax Code Means So 1178L means HMRC still counts you as an ordinary allowance holder, but your entitlement has been reduced from the £12,570 baseline.

Why Your Allowance Is £790 Lower

Three situations account for most 1178L codes. Your P2 will name whichever applies to you.

Untaxed Income Being Collected Through PAYE

Some income arrives without tax taken off but is still taxable. The state pension is the usual example: the DWP doesn’t run PAYE, so HMRC recovers the tax by cutting your code on your employment or private pension. Savings interest, rental income, and certain state benefits can be handled the same way.2GOV.UK. Tax Codes – What Your Tax Code Means A state pension of £790 a year, with no other adjustments, drops £12,570 to £11,780 and produces 1178L. Instead of a lump-sum bill, the tax spreads across your monthly pay.

Taxable Workplace Benefits

A company car, private medical insurance, or an interest-free loan from your employer counts as income even though it never appears as cash on your payslip. HMRC estimates the annual value and takes it out of your allowance. If your benefits are valued at £790 after any offsetting reliefs, the code lands at 1178L. The coding notice lists each benefit and its estimated value, so you can see whether the figure is realistic.

Underpaid Tax From an Earlier Year

When you owe less than £3,000 from a previous year, HMRC can pull it back by reducing this year’s code rather than sending a bill. The debt is spread over twelve months of PAYE.3GOV.UK. Pay Your Self Assessment Tax Bill – Through Your Tax Code There are limits: HMRC won’t use the code if doing so would take more than half your PAYE income or would more than double your usual deductions.4GOV.UK. A Mix of Additions and Subtractions

The £790 gap is often a net figure, not a single line. You might have a £60 flat-rate uniform allowance added to your code while £850 of estimated savings interest is taken off. The maths: £12,570 + £60 − £850 = £11,780, giving 1178L.

Job expense reliefs work in your favour and push the number back up. What It Costs You Compared to 1257L

Under 1178L, £11,780 of your yearly earnings is tax-free. That works out to about £981.67 a month. Everything above the threshold is taxed at your band rate: 20% basic, 40% higher, or 45% additional.1GOV.UK. Income Tax Rates and Personal Allowances

Set against the standard 1257L, an 1178L code means £790 more of your income is taxable each year. For a basic-rate taxpayer that’s roughly £158 in extra tax over the year, or about £13 a month. The difference isn’t a penalty. In most cases it’s paying the tax on income you’ve received elsewhere untaxed, or clearing a prior-year shortfall. If the underlying reason is wrong, though, you are genuinely overpaying, and the fix is worth chasing.

If You Live in Scotland or Wales

Scottish taxpayers see an S prefix, so the code becomes S1178L. The tax-free amount is the same £11,780, but Scottish income tax rates apply: a 19% starter rate, then basic (20%), intermediate (21%), higher (42%), advanced (45%), and top (48%).11GOV.UK. Welsh taxpayers see a C prefix. Welsh rates currently match the rest of the UK, so the prefix has no practical effect on what’s deducted, but the Welsh Parliament has the power to set different rates in future.11GOV.UK. Check the Breakdown

Whenever HMRC changes your code, they send a P2 coding notice showing every adjustment: the personal allowance, any reliefs, estimated untaxed income, benefit values, and any underpayment being recovered. If the figures don’t match your circumstances, your pay is being taxed on bad data.

You can see the same breakdown online through the Check Your Income Tax service on GOV.UK, and update your income estimate or employment details from there.13GOV.UK. Check Your Income Tax for the Current Year You’ll need a Government Gateway account and, on first use, some photo ID for identity checks.

Watch for lines that no longer apply. Common ones include untaxed rental income after you’ve stopped letting a property, benefits attached to a job you’ve left, or an underpayment that was actually settled another way.

Getting It Corrected

Once you report a change or challenge a figure, HMRC updates your record and issues a new code to your employer electronically. Payroll applies the corrected code from the next pay period, and you’ll get a fresh P2 showing the revised allowance.14GOV.UK. Understanding Your Employees’ Tax Codes – Changes

If you’ve been overpaying within the current tax year, your employer recalculates the year-to-date tax under the new code, and the overpayment usually comes back as a larger pay packet. Overpayments from earlier years may need a separate refund claim to HMRC. If the wrong code caused an underpayment, HMRC either recovers it through your revised code for the rest of the year or, for larger amounts, through Self Assessment.

Move quickly either way. A wrong code left in place builds up, and HMRC charges interest at 7.75% on late-paid income tax.15GOV.UK. HMRC Interest Rates for Late and Early Payments
