Box 7 on Form 1098-T is a checkbox your school marks when some of the tuition payments listed in Box 1 cover an academic term that begins in January, February, or March of the following year. If you paid Spring 2027 tuition in November or December 2026, the school checks Box 7 on your 2026 form to signal that those dollars still belong on your 2026 return, not next year’s.
What the Checkbox Actually Signals
Box 7 is not a dollar amount. It is a yes-or-no indicator. When checked on a 2026 form, it tells you that at least some of what appears in Box 1 pays for a term starting between January 1 and March 31, 2027.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms 1098-E and 1098-T (2026) – Section: Box 7
The usual scenario is a student or parent who settles the Spring bill early. The school receives payment in the fall, reports it in Box 1 for the year it was received, and uses Box 7 to flag that the term itself hasn’t started yet. Without the checkbox, you might assume those payments belong on the following year’s return.
Why Box 7 Matters for Your Education Credit
The IRS lets you claim qualified tuition and related expenses on the return for the year you paid them, as long as the payment covers a term that begins in that same year or within the first three months of the next.2Internal Revenue Service. Qualified Education Expenses Box 7 is the school’s confirmation that your prepaid tuition fits inside that window. It gives you the go-ahead to include those payments when you calculate the American Opportunity Tax Credit or the Lifetime Learning Credit for the current year.
Here is where filers get into trouble. If Box 7 is checked on your 2026 form and you claim those prepaid expenses on your 2026 return, you cannot claim the same dollars again on your 2027 return when classes actually start. The IRS matches these amounts, and double-claiming is one of the fastest ways to draw a notice.
The flip side also matters. If Box 7 is checked and you overlook it, you may leave money on the table by assuming the expense counts next year. The AOTC alone can be worth up to $2,500 per eligible student, so the timing is not a trivial detail.
Scholarships Still Reduce the Expense
Box 1 shows total payments received. It does not subtract scholarships or grants, which are reported separately in Box 5. If you have tax-free scholarships, subtract that amount from your qualified expenses before you run the credit calculation, whether or not Box 7 is checked.3Internal Revenue Service. Coordinating Box 7 With a 529 Plan
Box 7 creates a timing trap for families paying with a 529. The IRS expects the 529 distribution and the expense it covers to fall in the same calendar year. Pay Spring tuition in December but pull the 529 withdrawal in January, and the two land in different years. That mismatch can make the January distribution look like it exceeded qualified expenses, which exposes the earnings portion to income tax and a 10 percent penalty.
Keep the payment and the withdrawal in the same calendar year. If you prepay in December, take the 529 distribution in December. If you want to wait until January to withdraw, wait until January to pay the bill.
You also cannot use 529 money and an education credit for the same tuition dollars.4Internal Revenue Service. No Double Education Benefits Allowed To claim the full AOTC, you need $4,000 in qualified expenses paid from something other than a 529 account, such as personal funds or loans. Many families pay the first $4,000 out of pocket to capture the credit and cover the rest from the 529.
If Box 7 Looks Wrong
Schools make mistakes. Box 7 may be checked when it shouldn’t be, left unchecked when you clearly prepaid for a Spring term, or paired with an incorrect Box 1 figure. Start by contacting the bursar or financial services office and asking for a corrected 1098-T. Schools face IRS penalties for incorrect information returns and generally have a correction process.5Internal Revenue Service. Information Return Penalties
If a correction is not forthcoming, you are not stuck with the wrong numbers. Claim your credit based on what you actually paid, and keep the documentation that supports your figures. Records to Keep When Box 7 Is Checked
A checked Box 7 means you are claiming expenses in a year before the term begins, which makes the paper trail more important than usual. Hold onto tuition receipts, bank or credit card statements showing the payment date, and enrollment verification or a schedule confirming when the Spring term starts. A December receipt paired with a January class schedule lines up cleanly with what the checkbox is telling the IRS.7Internal Revenue Service. Publication 970 (2025) Tax Benefits for Education
Schools must deliver the 1098-T by January 31, so the form should arrive well before the April filing deadline.8Internal Revenue Service. That single checkmark decides which return the money belongs on.
